A good movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy, I was quite eager to check it out. The whole point of this concept was to tell the same story twice from 2 different points of the view and, I can tell you this, ” read more

To Have and Have Not
Notes: Well, this movie is really the stuff of legend. First of all, it was the first movie starring Lauren Bacall and back in those days, she was only 20 years old when she made it and it was also the first movie she made with her future husband, Humphrey Bogart. Furthermore, it was directed by the great Howard Hawks and it is an adaptation of a novel written by Ernest Hemingway. Basically, it doesn't get more prestigious than this, does it? Anyway, the acting was off the charts, the directing was very good and I just really enjoyed the story, basically one of those typical film noir they used to make back then. I mean, it was a rather typical film noir but it was full of awesome one-liners and the tone was just really well set and I thought it was completely entertaining. To conclude, it is really a good classic and it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Mia Wasikowska, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, thanks to this movie, you get to see some gorgeous and even hypnotic Australian landscapes and only therefore I think the damned thing wa” read more

A good movie

“I already saw this movie but since I have it on Blu-ray and since I just bought an awesome new TV, I thought I might as well check it out again. Even though this movie turned out to be a flop at the box-office, a first in Stars Wars so far successful history, well, to be honest, I have to admit that” read more

Solo: A Star Wars Story
Cast : Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Paul Bettany, Jon Favreau, Warwick Davis What was it about? During an adventure into the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebellion. My two cents:  Even though this movie had turned out to be a flop at the box-office, a first in Stars Wars so far successful history, I was still eager to check it out even if I had some rather low expectations. Well, to be honest, I have to admit that I was actually positively surprised by the damned thing. I mean, sure, it was nothing really groundbreaking but when was the last time that a Stars Wars flick had been anything really revolutionary? Above all, the damned thing was actually quite entertaining. I mean, even though Star Wars has always focused on the Skywalkers, Han Solo has always been much more fun and charismatic and this movie nailed so many landmarks moments concerning this iconic character such as how he got his name, how he met Chewbacca or how he discoverered the Millenium Falcon. Furthermore, even though I heard that Alden Ehrenreich had been criticized for his performance but I think he was actually not bad at all and he made for a convincing younger version of this character. Concerning the story, like many similar blockbusters, they tried to cover too much ground in one single movie and they could have easily split the whole thing into 3 movies. Of course, I wonder how the whole thing would have turned out to be with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller still on board and it’s a pity that they went for some of the most entertaining directors at work nowadays to the safest and most bland guy from the bunch. On the other hand, I have to admit that Ron Howard has done actually a solid job after all with this movie. My rating: 07/10 Check the full review

Henry V
Notes: Nowadays, they usually adapt the classic Shakespeare plays with a modern setting but I really did appreciate that Laurence Olivier set the story in the 15th century like it was in Shakespeare’s original work. I was also impressed to discover that it was actually Olivier’s directorial debut as this lavish production was quite ambitious for a first time effort. Still, to be honest, it has been a while since I have seen such a challenging movie though. Indeed, even if I did watch it with some English subtitles, I still struggled with these 2 hours of non-stop vintage Shakespearean dialogues. Furthermore, is it me or was the story actually super simple? In fact, I actually saw Kenneth Branagh’s version but it was ages ago and I can’t say I remember much about it though. Anyway, it seemed that Henry V, for some rather dubious reasons at least to me, went to France, kicked their ass, and married the daughter of the French king, Charles VI, but I thought it all seemed rather thin for more than 2 hours of running time. Eventually, the whole point was obviously not the plot but the intricate but still marvelous dialogues written by the Bard. On top of that, it was probably the most faithful adaptation of a Shakespeare’s play I have seen so far. Indeed, Olivier went as far as having the first scenes taking place as an actual play in some theater in 1600 and this approach was unexpected but really neat. The rest of the story was then handled in a much more straightforward way but it still worked though.

Dumbo
Cast: Eva Green, Michael Keaton, Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito What was it about? A live-action remake of the animated Disney film, "Dumbo", in which a young elephant with extraordinarily large ears develops the skill to fly. My two cents: Eventually, it turned out to be a decent watch but not much more than that, I'm afraid. The biggest issue was that the original animated movie was really short so, obviously, they had to expand it somehow. Unfortunately, even if it could have been an opportunity to come up with something new and interesting, they basically kept repeating the same thing over and over again. Furthermore, I didn't mind that they focused this time around on the human characters but they were all rather boring. For example, it was pretty neat to see Michael Keaton working again with Burton and he obviously had some fun but his character was just rather tedious. Finally, even though they needed to expand it, a running time of 110 mins was just way too long for such a simple tale. Anyway, I still think it would be a decent watch for the young kids but there is no doubt that Tim Burton has here delivered another forgettable directing effort.
