Odd Man Out (1947)
Notes: Eventually, even though I thought this movie was indeed pretty good, I failed to see what was so great about it. Apparently, I have read somewhere that it is even Roman Polanski’s favorite movie of all time. Basically, it is a very old movie and the most striking element about this movie is how dark and gloomy the whole thing was it was still pretty good, especially if you compare it to the garbage we usually get nowadays. One of the biggest asset in this flick was James Mason who was fine here (Mason himself thought it was the best performance of his career) and it was pretty neat to see him playing the lead for once. The directing by Carol Reed was decent and, eventually, a few years later, Reed would make ‘The Third Man’ which would get much more noticed than this flick.

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Joe Carnahan’s work, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, I have to admit that, at least, Carnahan tried to do something completely different than his previous movies. Still, to be honest,” read more

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
Cast : Keira Knightley, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren What was it about? A young girl is transported into a magical world of gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice. My two cents: Even though this movie had been a huge commercial and critical flop, since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be another massive product design and CGI extravaganza but it was maybe the least annoying aspect about this movie. Indeed, the whole thing was nothing original at all and it was pretty much a mix of various movies such as ‘The Polar Express’, ‘Narnia’, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and even ‘Hugo’. Above all, the damned thing was just so generic and boring. Seriously, they couldn’t come up with a better gimmick than having the main character missing her recently deceased mother? Eventually, the story and the characters involved were just terribly tedious and the only thing I enjoyed was the ballet during the end-credits. At the end of the day, you might wonder if the this movie wouldn’t have worked better if they didn’t go for such a bland and generic approach. My rating: 05/10 Check the full review

A good movie

“For once, we went to see a documentary with my film club which is always a bold choice in my opinion. First of all, I thought it was terribly refreshing to see the Afghani people as some regular folks instead as the usual blood-thirsty religious fanatics. Of course, it might seem common sense but, o” read more

Mechanic: Resurrection
Notes: Even though 'The Mechanic' was watchable, it was rather surprising that they would make a sequel for this movie and, after watching the end-result, this choice was even more bewildering. Sure, it was maybe not the worst Statham vehicle I have seen so far but it was still rather weak though. At least, the action took place in many exotic locations (Brazil, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Australia) but that was pretty much the only thing interesting about this movie. I have to amit that some of the action scenes were pretty neat but most of them were just some endless shootings which bored me rather fast. Concerning Jessica Alba, sure, she is still look stunning but it is rather sad that, 10 years after 'Into the Blue', she is still stuck playing some gratuitous underwater swimming scenes in her bikini. Eventually, the thing that bothered me the most with this flick was that the story was just some non-stop nonsense.

A good movie

“Since I'm a big fan of Steve McQueen, of course, I was quite eager to check his last directing effort, especially since the reviews were once again really positive. Well, to be honest, I have to admit that it was actually slightly disappointing. I mean, sure, McQueen has delivered here a solid and o” read more

Not Safe for Work
Notes: Well, even though I already had some low expectations, I still managed to be even weaker than I expected. Basically, it was just another cheap thriller and I was amazed by how little was actually going on through the whole thing. I mean, even if the running time was not even 80 mins, there were still some long stretches during which nothing much really happened at all. Then, the cast was just rather underwhelming. I mean, I have nothing against Max Minghella but the guy is just no leading material. Eventually, the only one who managed to do something slightly interesting with his character was JJ Feild but even he looked him a cheap Tom Hiddleston clone. Coming back to the story, seriously, the whole thing was just so lazy. I mean, not only it was just really generic and predictable, most of it didn't make much sense For example, why would the main character try to investigate what's going on just after he got fired? Then, why did it take him so long to call the cops? Even some small details were poorly handled like the fact that if a phone is turned off, you will always have to first enter the pincode before receiving a call.

A bad movie

“To be honest, even though this flick didn't seem to be amazing, since it was directed by Joe Johnston, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, it is rather surprising that Johnston would go from directing a big Marvel blockbuster to helm such cheap direct-to-DVD thriller. Well, even th” read more

The Lady from Shanghai
Notes: Eventually, this movie was not as good as Welles's masterpieces such as 'Citizen Kane' but it was still a damned fine picture. As usual with Welles, there was some major tempering from the studio and, as a matter of fact, Orson Welles only made this movie in the first place because he really need some quick cash at the time. Still, even though the whole thing was flawed, the directing was quite awesome and there was also a great mood. At the time, it caused some controversy that Orson Welles decided to have Rita Hayworth cut her hair and bleach it but I thought she looked great. On top of that, she gave a solid performance and stole the show every time she was on the screen. In my opinion, the main weakness was with the story which was nothing original and actually rather pedestrian. Still, in spite of its flaws, it remains a solid film noir feature.

A good movie

“Since I really loved ‘A Separation’, I was really eager to see Asghar Farhadi’s following directing effort, especially since it was well received. Well, even though there was some really good things in this movie, to be honest, it never really blew me away though.  I mean, Farhadi displayed s” read more
