A good movie

“I already saw this movie but since I have it on Blu-ray and since I just brought a brand new awesome TV, I was quite eager to check it out again. First of all, even though I have never been a huge fan of Steven Spielberg, his movies are always a big event so I was quite intrigued by this movie, espe” read more

Out of the Past (1947)
Notes: It is probably the most essential film noir ever made. Indeed, you basically had all the usual trademarks : the raincoats, the hats, the omnipresent cigarettes, the gansters, the detective, the femmes fatale and the double-crossing intrigues. Considering the directing, I saw as well a couple of other movies directed by Jacques Tourneur (‘Cat People’, ‘I Walked with a Zombie’) but, even though these movies were decent, this feature was definitely much more impressive. Seriously, when you watch the damned thing, it makes you wish that they still made such black and white movies. Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas were just awesome but Jane Greer and Rhonda Fleming were both very good as well. I have to admit that the story was actually rather convoluted but, for once, it didn’t really bother me. Indeed, it is inherent to the genre and the dialogues were such a treat and, every 5 seconds, those characters were delivering some amazing one-liners.

Monsieur Verdoux
Notes: Apparently, this film was originally meant to be directed by Orson Welles and starring Charles Chaplin, but Chaplin backed out at the last moment, saying that he had never had anyone direct him before and didn't want to start. Can you imagine this combination?!? Eventually, Chaplin directed the thing himself and regarded the film as the cleverest and most brilliant film of his career. Unfortunately for him, it was a huge flop when it was released which was not really surprising when you think about it. Indeed, Chaplin was beloved for a playing the same character for years and, suddenly, he decided to do something entirely different and, a usual, the audience wouldn't have it. Personally, even though I didn't enjoy it as much as his previous movies, I still think it was pretty good and it is now highly regarded. You can't deny that such lugubrious dark comedy was way ahead of its time.

A good movie

“Since I really loved ‘Nightcrawler’, I was really eager to see this new directing effort from Dan Gilroy once again starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo and the fact that it was directly available on Netflix was another reason to watch it straight away. Well, it turned to be something really ” read more

Odd Man Out (1947)
Notes: Eventually, even though I thought this movie was indeed pretty good, I failed to see what was so great about it. Apparently, I have read somewhere that it is even Roman Polanski’s favorite movie of all time. Basically, it is a very old movie and the most striking element about this movie is how dark and gloomy the whole thing was it was still pretty good, especially if you compare it to the garbage we usually get nowadays. One of the biggest asset in this flick was James Mason who was fine here (Mason himself thought it was the best performance of his career) and it was pretty neat to see him playing the lead for once. The directing by Carol Reed was decent and, eventually, a few years later, Reed would make ‘The Third Man’ which would get much more noticed than this flick.

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Joe Carnahan’s work, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, I have to admit that, at least, Carnahan tried to do something completely different than his previous movies. Still, to be honest,” read more

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
Cast : Keira Knightley, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren What was it about? A young girl is transported into a magical world of gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice. My two cents: Even though this movie had been a huge commercial and critical flop, since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be another massive product design and CGI extravaganza but it was maybe the least annoying aspect about this movie. Indeed, the whole thing was nothing original at all and it was pretty much a mix of various movies such as ‘The Polar Express’, ‘Narnia’, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and even ‘Hugo’. Above all, the damned thing was just so generic and boring. Seriously, they couldn’t come up with a better gimmick than having the main character missing her recently deceased mother? Eventually, the story and the characters involved were just terribly tedious and the only thing I enjoyed was the ballet during the end-credits. At the end of the day, you might wonder if the this movie wouldn’t have worked better if they didn’t go for such a bland and generic approach. My rating: 05/10 Check the full review

A good movie

“For once, we went to see a documentary with my film club which is always a bold choice in my opinion. First of all, I thought it was terribly refreshing to see the Afghani people as some regular folks instead as the usual blood-thirsty religious fanatics. Of course, it might seem common sense but, o” read more
