The African Queen (1951)
Notes: Recently, I have seen ā€˜The Treasure of the Sierra Madreā€™ which is arguably the best movie Humphrey Bogart and John Huston have made together. Eventually, they would make 5 movies and this flick was the last one they made together. Even though it is also considered as a classic, it didnā€™t have much an impact on me, at least not as much as ā€˜The Treasureā€¦ā€™ which was really amazing and the best thing starring Bogart I have seen so far. I mean, it was a solid and fun adventure and I had a good time watching it but there was not much depth whatsoever so it didnā€™t really blow me away. Still, Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn were some of the best actors of their generation and they made a great couple to watch. Eventually, Bogart would win the only Oscar of his career for this flick but it is rather discutable if it was indeed his best performance considering his work in ā€˜Casablancaā€™ and ā€˜The Treasure of the Sierra Madreā€™. Anyway, even though I donā€™t think it was really that amazing, it remains a decent classic.

Call Me by Your Name
Notes: Well, to be honest, it took me a while to get into this movie. Indeed, I was at first slightly annoyed by this intellectual bourgeois family with their gorgeous house in Italy and, when Armie Hammer (basically your typical Greek god) showed up, I started to wonder if the damned would actually work for me. However, the whole thing was pretty slow and it really took its time but, eventually, it slowly won me over. Indeed, thanks to the slow pace, you really get the chance to follow Elio in his journey experiencing his first love and this journey was quite fascinating. Seriously, it is not very often that you get to see such a perfect depiction of the burgeoning of love and it has been a while since I have seen such a convincing love story. Concerning TimothĆ©e Chalamet, I kept hearing some great things about this guy and now I understand why he is considered as one of the most promising actors of his generation. Concerning Armie Hammer, ever since his breakthrough with ā€˜The Social Networkā€™, the guy had been rather struggling but, with this flick, he made an impressive come-back. Anyway, eventually, I really enjoyed this movie a lot.

The Lavender Hill Mob
Notes: Eventually, it turned out to be a decent comedy but, to be honest, not much more than that in my opinion. First of all, I saw the damned thing on the BBC without subtitles so I have to admit that I didnā€™t get all the jokes so maybe if I rewatch it with some subtitles, I might be able to enjoy it more. Still, it was a fun flick with another strong performance by Alec Guinness. Furthermore, I always had a weak spot for the heist genre, especially when the heist is actually quite realistic like it was in this case, at least, until the 3rd act. Indeed, at some point, the characters started to chase these little girls with their golden Eiffel towers and, in my opinion, even if it was maybe entertaining, the whole thing didnā€™t make much sense after that. Anyway, even if I wasnā€™t completely blown away by the whole thing, it was still a decent watch.

An average movie

“To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Keanu Reeves, I thought I might as well check his first (and so far only) directing effort. Well, it was rather surprising that Reeves would choose to direct such a typical Asian martial arts flick but” read more

An average movie

“Even though I didn't really like 'Ida', I was quite eager to give this director a 2nd chance, especially since this movie had been widely heralded and was even considered as one of the best movies released in 2018. Well, unfortunately, pretty much like with 'Ida', I really struggled to connect with ” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was on the '1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die' list, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, it turned out to be a really solid film noir, that's for sure. In fact, the opening scene in the subway was just amazing ” read more

Diary of a Country Priest (1951)
Notes: It was the first movie I saw directed by Robert Bresson and, as I expected, his work turned out to be quite challenging. Indeed, Iā€™m not surprised that Andrei Tarkovsky was a huge fan of Bressonā€™s work and, to be honest, just like with Tarkovskyā€™s work, I did struggle to feel a connection with this movie. Indeed, even though the main character keeps telling us his feelings and thoughts mostly when writing in his diary, I was never really sure what I should think regarding the events displayed in this movie. I mean, you could argue that they tried to display the contradictions between what this community was expecting from their new priest and what he was expected to do according to his religious dogma. However, this theory completely clashed with the fact that the main character was heavily ill through most of the duration and, as result, the whole thing was rather murky, at least, to me. Still, Bresson had such a raw and realistic directing style, it made the whole thing rather ostentatious but also quite spellbinding to behold. It is also interesting to note that Bresson used to make takes after takes so that the actors would basically forget that they were acting but, to be honest, even if the performances were intriguing, I didnā€™t think that they were super realistic. Still, Claude Laydu, in his first acting part, was actually really good.

A good movie

“I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but it seemed to have a decent reputation and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out.
