An average movie

“To be honest, I was rather surprised that they would come up with a sequel for ‘Jack Reacher’. I mean, sure, it was actually a decent action flick but it was still nothing groundbreaking and, above all, it didn’t turn out to be a huge success at the  box-office. However, it seems that Tom Cru” read more

Forbidden Planet
Notes: Honestly, I find it rather difficult to judge this movie. Indeed, it is almost 60 years old and after watching 100s of more modern SF features like '2001: A Space Odissey ', 'Prometheus' or 'Interstellar' which had access to some more advanced technology and had some much bigger budgets, the whole thing looked pretty cheesy. On top of that, from the moment you see Leslie Nielsen showing up on the screen, you expect him to crack up some stupid jokes every 5 minutes. And yet, we shouldn't forget that this movie had a huge impact on all the Science-Fiction movies that came afterwards. Indeed, at the time, the studios didn’t care much for the genre and it was the very first time that a SF feature was given a large budget. On top of that, the story was actually pretty good and I was quite taken by this mysterious world. Indeed, they finally became aware that they should handle this kind of tales more or less seriously and it really worked. That’s the great thing about Science-Fiction, everything is possible and the only limitation is your own imagination (okay, a decent budget might help as well).

“Even though this movie turned out to be a massive critical and commercial flop, I was still curious to see if it was really so bad. Well, I have to agree that the damned thing was indeed pretty weak. Basically, it was supposed to be some kind of cute, whimsical and perhaps even inspiring tale but it” read more

A very good movie

A good movie

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I kept hearing some pretty good things about it, I was quite eager to check it out. Basically, it was some kind of character study, showing how a couple might evolve after a near tragedy. And I guess, that's what we do, the spoiled privil” read more

Breathless (1960)
Original Title: 'À bout de souffle' Directed by: Jean-Luc Godard With: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg Plot: A young car thief kills a policeman and tries to persuade a girl to hide in Italy with him. Note: It used to be a 5 star but and was probably my favorite but I watched it again and it dropped 1 spot because there were a few dull moments. But still it remains a great movie and one of my favorites.

“I already saw this movie but, for some reason, I thought it would be a great idea to rewatch the whole transformers franchise. BlacKkKlansman
chosen by Bea Notes: I have always been a big fan of Spike Lee but, to honest, it had been years since the guy made something really amazing. Fortunately, he made an impressive comeback with this movie. Indeed, it worked on so many levels. It was a fun and entertaining police thriller, a sometimes hilarious satire and it also had a powerful message and it is so rare to find a movie managing to mix so many tones and doing it so well. The main character, very well played by John David Washington (yes, the son of Denzel Washington), was also complex and interesting showing some genuine internal conflict between his loyalty to his black folks but also towards his colleagues and his work as a cop. Eventually, in my opinion, the main core was to show that racism in general and the Ku Klux Klan in particular are basically based on ignorance because, at the end of day, it is ridiculous to argue that the color of your skin should make you a better or a worse person. To conclude, it was a really entertaining and powerful movie at the same time which is a very rare combination nowadays. (Sep. 2018)
