“Not to be confused with the great movie directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the only reason I wanted to watch this flick was because it was Stephen Sommers's directing debut but, to be honest, I had some rather low expectations. Well, it turned out of be some kind of mix of ” read more

It was actually directed by Camille Delamarre. Luc Besson wrote and produced this movie. As usual with a Luc Besson production, the damned was pretty weak and boring. I mean, there was a few good ideas and some of the action scenes using parkour were actually pretty neat. In fact, I discovered afterwards that David Belle actually invented the disciple known as Parkour which was pretty cool so no wonder that the guy was so impressive during those scenes. Unfortunately, Besson remains a rather weak writer who keeps lifting some obvious elements from other movies. Of course, you could argue that Quentin Tarantino does exactly the same thing but, with Besson, it makes his movies so generic and tedious to watch. To make things worse, will all respect to the late Paul Walker, the guy was just a rather boring actor and he played here the same character he kept playing through most of his career.

“I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. I have to admit that I haven't seen the original version, 'Banlieue 13', and since it has a decent reputation, I might check it out at some point but, to be honest, I didn't care mu” read more

“I wasn’t sure what to expect from this flick but since it is considered as a classic comedy, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, pretty much like some other classic comedies made at the time like 'Animal House' or 'Vacation', I really struggled to care about the damned thing, I'” read more

The Ten Commandments (1956)
Notes: In 2014, Ridley Scott came up with ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ and I had some pretty high expectations but, unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the most disappointing movies released that year. The main reason was probably because this tale has been adapted so many times before and, above all, way better. This version directed by Cecil B. DeMille is already almost 60 years old but it still considered as one of the best. To be honest, from the same era, I actually prefer ‘Ben Hur’ which is truly an amazing picture. I mean, I don't mind an old movie from time to time, especially if it is well made like this one. Still, it is really over the top, lasts almost 4 hours and even though I find this subject interesting, I'm usually more interested by something more sober. At least, it was more fun than reading the actual Bible (I did try to read the damned thing but after a couple of 100s of pages, I got bored out of my mind and couldn’t finish it) and Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner were perfectly cast. Anyway, even though I’m not a huge fan, it is still a solid classic.

Underworld: Blood Wars
Notes: To be honest, I wasn’t interested in this movie but from all the movies I suggested to watch with Nick, my step-son, it was the only one he was really eager to see. Well, once again, I was just terribly bored by this damned franchise. First of all, even though they spend the first minutes reminding us what happened in the previous instalments, I was really struggling to remember what the hell happened in the previous movie which I saw about 6 years ago. Wasn't it taking place in the future? I also completely forgot that Theo James was also involved. Anyway, it was pretty much the same story, there is this big war between the Vampires and the Lycans and you have the super warrior Selene stuck in the middle. Seriously, how they managed to release 5 movies with this material is really beyond me. On top of that, all the new characters added this time around were not interesting or entertaining whatsoever. At least, Kate Beckinsale has recently claimed that she won’t be returning for yet another instalment so maybe we are finally done with this franchise.

The Searchers
Notes: First of all, this movie gives an interesting look on the settlers, these pioneers, who were finally starting to have a fairly ordinarily life but, at the same time, there was always the possibility of some swift burst of violence which could wipe them out within minutes. Then, you had this fascinating and complex main character, Ethan Edwards, who, maybe subconsciously, might never ever be able to settle with a farm and work on his land, and instead would rather spend 5 years roaming all the West to find his lost niece which seemed like an impossible mission. There was also the fact that the guy was more or less a psychopath who had such a hatred of the Indians that he might kill his beloved niece if she had the misfortune to choose to become an Indian. Still, to be honest, I have to admit that not everything really worked for me. For example, you never actual have the feeling that they have been so long on road or that they have covered so much territory. Furthermore, another problem I had was that, towards the end, Debbie seemed to change her mind way too easily which was very convenient to neatly wrap everything up for their happy-ending. Anyway, even if I'm still not a huge fan, it is definitely a really solid Western.

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for David Ayer's work, I was quite eager to check it out.
