Marley
chosen by Bea Notes: Since I'm a huge fan of Reggae music, I definitely had to watch this flick. To be honest, I have never been really a fan of his work, in my opinion, Marley has always been the big tree hiding the rest of the forest, but I always had a huge respect for his legacy and he definitely made some monsters tunes. Anyway, it was a great flick, absolutely. Even though I already knew about 90% of what was told, it was just great to have the whole story told, to see all those places where he had been and to meet all these people with whom he has been involved with. And what a life... Like so many other immortal figures like Bruce Lee, Kurt Cobain or Jimi Hendrix, he left right in the middle of his fame but this movie succeeded in giving most of the details of his journey from a small village in Jamaica to become a world superstar, passing by the ghettos of Trenchtown in Kingston. You could argue that they didn't criticize the guy much but that's not what this movie was about. Even though he was a person who was rejected as a mixed-blood, as a rastafari, he still became an idol for everyone living in this small island (even today) but also for many people around the globe.

Five Easy Pieces
Notes: Well, that was definitely a very intriguing picture. Basically, it was dealing with a talented man who made the decision to literally throw it all away and, in the process, he also decided to make a mess of himself and his life. Eventually, the guy didn't give a sh*t about anything or anyone and it lead to a rather destructive behavior. Who else than Jack Nicholson could play such a conflicted part?!? Not many actors, I guess. Following his guest part in 'Easy Rider', this movie definitely put him in the spotlights and he didn't leave the A list for the following 40 years. To be honest, the first half was in fact rather slow and I wasn't really interested by the whole thing but during the second half, you finally get acquainted with his dual side and then the movie became a fascinating character study. Eventually, you come to the conclusion that this guy didn't fit anywhere. He despised the elitair crowd with which his family was hanging out but he despised just as well his working class ‘friends’. You really wonder what he will be doing with himself but you get the feeling he didn’t have a clue himself either.

A good movie

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since it has a decent reputation and since I have a weak spot for Humphrey Bogart, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, it took me a while to get into the damned thing. Indeed, they really took their time to set the whole” read more

An average movie

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, even though 'Cloverfield' doesn't have a really stellar reputation, I really had a weak spot for the damned thing but, to be honest, I didn't care much for this sequel. I mean, I did like the fact” read more

A good movie

“After watching 'The Return' and 'Leviathan' from the same director, I was expecting again something massively dark and depressing but, to be honest, compared to this 2 previous directing efforts, this movie turned out to be almost easy to swallow. Still, it was far from being a comedy, that's for su” read more

A classic

“I already saw this movie, in fact, I even saw it in the movie theater when it was released more than 20 years ago, but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. Well, even though it is a huge classic, in France but also abroad, to be honest, I alwa” read more

Beasts of the Southern Wild
chosen by Eric Notes: Eventually, even though I really liked this movie, I can’t say I really loved it though. Basically, it was a rather dark and gloomy picture, with some nice directing and really strong acting but, to be honest, I didn’t like their approach of showing a harsh reality while telling you at the same time ‘Just relax, this isn’t actually reality, it is in fact some magic realism so you shouldn’t worry about the terrible fate of these characters’. I also didn’t like much the way they introduced the father who was displayed at first as a careless drunk douchebag but, by the end, it might have been actually the best father in the world after all. It was some rather cheap manipulation. Still, there was definitely something quite mesmerizing about the damned thing. Indeed, even though they obviously didn’t have much money, they created a detailled and organic world and most of the shots were very well done and beautiful to look at. And, of course, the very young Quvenzhané Wallis gave an impressive performance, she was only 5 years old when was cast and became, at 9 years old, the youngest person ever nominated for an Academy Award for the Best Actress and it will probably remain so for a long time.

Silver Linings Playbook
chosen by Henk Notes: This movie was just really amazing. I even shed a few tears, something that never happened to me before. First of all, after 20 years of mindless garbage, the great Robert De Niro was finally showing up in a good movie giving a great performance like in the good old days. Secondly, the characters and the whole story really touched me personally as I was reminded of how I met my wife and why we ended up together in the first place. Finally, it was just a terrific movie with some real characters, with some real issues, dealing with their emotions and making me laugh and cry. I was also impressed by Bradley Cooper. Man, this guy seems to be the real deal. Indeed, only a few years before, he got his breakthrough with 'The Hangover' as a funny guy, then he became quickly another pretty face but, now, he is profiling himself as a genuinely talented dramatic actor. Concerning Jennifer Lawrence, I was not so sure. I mean, she gave a solid performance but, in my opinion, she was actually too young for this part. Anyway, it is probably the best romantic-comedy I have ever seen and I just loved the damned thing.

Coming back to this discussion, since then I have seen both 'Youth Without Youth' and 'Twixt' and, well, to be honest, they were both pretty weak. Indeed, 'Youth Without Youth' was watchable but terri
