The Son of Bigfoot
Notes: When my daughter told me that she wanted to watch this movie, I have to admit that I didn't know at all what she was talking about which is usually not really a good omen. So, I looked it up and, honestly, I thought I looked really lame but we still ended up watching it in the movie theater together. Well, I have to admit it, it was not as awful as I expected it to be. I mean, it was still pretty weak but, at least, it was watchable. Furthermore, the animation, while not being anything groundbreaking, was decent enough and even the 3D effects were not bad at all which was a nice surprise coming from a Belgian-French production like this one. Unfortunately, I still had a hard time to care about the story. I mean, once again, it wasn't the worst story ever but it was still really generic and terribly boring.

The Conversation
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. It is apparently Francis Ford Coppola's personal favorite of his movies. Eventually, the only reason this movie didn’t get the love it deserved was probably the fact that Coppola was really on fire in the 70’s and all his movies turned out to be some huge masterpieces. Anyway, the whole thing was a raw and realistic feature, so much more spellbinding than the modern thrillers that we get nowadays. Indeed, for example, many years later, Tony Scott came up with ‘Enemy of State’ which also focusing on some conspiracy theory, also starring Gene Hackman in a similar part, but even though it was fairly entertaining, most of it was seriously far-fetched and borderline ridiculous. In this movie, every thing was actually likely to happen (for example, they used in this movie the very same surveillance and wire-tapping equipment that members of the Nixon Administration used to spy on political opponents prior to the Watergate scandal) which made the whole thing much more fascinating to behold.

An average movie

“I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, even though my wife always had a weak spot for this movie, I always had a hard time to care about  the damned thing. I have to admit it, it was still a decent watch ” read more

Notes: Well, it is probably Roman Polanski's most famous movie and, I think it completely deserves its stellar reputation. Indeed, it is basically a great mix of a traditional neo-noir feature with Polanski's dark and twisted directing style. I have to admit that the plot tends to be a little bit murky so it is definitely a movie that you can easily watch a couple of times just to fully understand all the details and what the hell is actually going on. Anyway, the murkiness of the plot was actually something really inherent to genre and I really enjoyed the fact that none of the characters were really good as they all seemed to be pretty messed up, something recurrent in Polanski's work. This movie is also one of the many classics starring Jack Nicholson and he was just great in this. Eventually, it would be the last picture Polanski made in the US as he had to fled the country following the neverending drama involved in his personal life. It's such a pity because, back then, he was one of the most successful and highly regarded movie directors in the world.

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, I have to admit that I didn't know much about Ernest Hemingway before watching this movie but, apparently, his life could definitely provide som” read more

A very good movie

“Thanks to my filmclub, I discovered Felix Van Groeningen and I was quite eager to check this movie which was apparently his best directing effort so far. Well, I wasn't disappointed, that's for sure,  as the damned thing turned out to be a fascinating and heartbreaking drama. I mean, to be honest, ” read more

The Broken Circle Breakdown
Notes: To be honest, the story itself was actually rather generic. Basically, they gave us a nice couple who falls in love and when everything seems to be perfect for them, they are faced with a massive tragedy which was obviously nothing new. However, the big difference with this movie is that this couple was just fascinating to follow. Indeed, even though they were immensely charismatic, they didn't feel like the usual super-stars you get in your typical Hollywood production, they felt like some genuinely regular people which made them much more mesmerizing to follow. It did help that the music they played was just amazing and, of course, Van Groeningen should get some credit as well as the directing was really strong here. Hell, even this usually terribly useless and annoying gimmick of going back and forth in time worked very well thanks to him.
