Notes: Honestly, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point to make up my mind for good about the whole thing. The thing is that, before watching it, I really thought it looked awesome. I mean, 4 years after the really amazing 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid', George Roy Hill was making another movie starring once again Paul Newman and Robert Redford, this time about some con artists in the 30's. On paper, it sounded just great and, indeed, while 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' was at the time snubbed by the Academy, this flick managed to win the Best Picture Academy award. So, it all sounded great but, to be honest, I thought it was actually slightly underwhelming. I did like it but, I don't know, I thought it was just too easy. Indeed, as if they thought, if we just get all the same ingredients, we will get once again something great. On the other hand, I'm in the minority here since it is quite a popular feature.7 years, 6 months ago

Notes: I did see this movie but, to be honest, it was ages ago. Anyway, back then, I had no idea what to expect from the damned thing and I saw it because it seemed to have a decent reputation. Well, even though it was pretty good, it was still a tough watch though. Indeed, it goes on for almost 4 hours long and nothing much really happens, except that you get to see Jean-Pierre Léaud getting involved in some love triangle with a ‘mother’ and a ‘whore’. For many, it is considered as one of the most essentials movies delivered by the French New Wave but, to be honest, ‘A bout de souffle’ et ‘Les quatre cent coups’ were much easier to digest and simply much more fun to behold. Still, even if I’m not a big fan, it was still a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre. 7 years, 6 months ago

Notes: First of all, it was not surprising that for his sophomore directing effort Clint Eastwood decided to direct a Western. Back in those days, it was the genre he was the most associated with and it was pretty much compulsory that Eastwood would star in all his directing effort otherwise the studio wouldn’t back his projects. Surprisingly, it took as long as 30 years with the release of ‘Mystic River’ before he was finally able to make the movies he wanted only as a director. Anyway, back to our main feature, Clint Eastwood is the last Western living legend and it has always been a pleasure to see him kick some ass. To be honest, this flick was nothing really original whatsoever but it was very well made and entertaining enough. Out of the 4 Westerns he has directed, it was probably the least interesting one but it doesn’t mean it was bad, not at all.7 years, 6 months ago

Notes: To be honest, even after watching this movie twice, I still wasn’t exactly blown away by the whole thing. The main issue I had back then and still have is that the characters were rather aimless, emotionless, filled with a guastly void. As a result, I thought it was really difficult to connect with them and their boredom was highly contagious. Still, like all the work done by Terrence Malick, there was something quite fascinating about this flick. Indeed, I loved the way he always challenges the typical narrative conventions and the photography was just superb with some amazing shots. Furthermore, even though I had a hard time to care about the characters, I don’t think Martin Sheen or Sissy Spacek should be blamed since they both gave some very good performances. Eventually, I actually preferred some of the more recent movies directed Malick like 'The Thin Red Line' or 'The New World' but it still an intriguing feature and a classic.7 years, 6 months ago
