Jaws (1975)
Notes: It is obviously the first masterpiece directed by Steven Spielberg and also a huge milestone in motion picture. We all know the story by now, Spielberg didn't have such a huge budget back then but he still managed to make one of the most thrilling flicks ever made. Indeed, because the budget was so small, the shark really looked cheap and just plain terrible so Steven Spielberg decided to show the beast as least as possible but it turned out to be a blessing. Since then, virtually every year, you get similar movies but none of them has ever reached its sheer awesomeness. Back then, it was only Spielberg's 3rd directing effort but it became the highest grossing movie ever made at the time (he will beat his own record in 1982 with 'E.T.' and again in 1993 with 'Jurassic Park'). So, already very early in his career, starting with this movie, he had a huge influence on the movie world and he introduced to us the summer blockbuster, if you like it or not, and it is a concept which is still going strong 40 years later.

The Man Who Fell to Earth
Notes: Well, it must be by far one of the weirdest alien features I have ever seen. Basically, it was a little bit like 'E.T.', except that the alien character was not a puppet but was played by David Bowie and the makers were apparently running on acid. First of all, let's state the obvious, Bowie was basically born to play such a character. Back in those days, the rock star was actually a major drug addict but, even without the drugs, the way he looked and his attitude was just perfect to play this alien creature. Concerning the movie itself, it was rather hit and miss, to be honest. I mean, its random and experimental aspect made the whole thing rather unique but also terribly messy and, very often, I had seriously no idea what the hell was going on. Furthermore, it didn't help that I didn't care much for any other character, especially the characters played by Rip Torn and Candy Clark. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, it is still an interesting cult-classic though.

An average movie

“After watching ‘White Bird in a Blizzard’ (which was pretty good) and ‘Smiley Face’ (which was pretty lame), I was quite eager to check the feature that Gregg Araki did direct between these 2 movies. Well, I really liked the way it started and the damned thing had seriously some potential.” read more

All the President
Notes: First of all, it is a great story and you would need a very bad director to mess it up. Still, we should give Alan J. Pakula some credit to make the plot realistic but also spellbinding to watch. Coming back to what I said before, if they would make this movie nowadays, there would be some chases, some shootings and, of course, one of those dreadfull twists at the end. Not here. Here, you really get to understand that the most part of the job was staying behind your desk, arguing with some other people on the phone, and writing a bit, meeting someone with some intel, writing some more, etc. There is no guns, no explosions, but some 3 dimensional human beings facing a terrible truth and trying to deal with it. Of course, Roberd Redford and Dustin Hoffman were back then on top of their game and gave some terrific performances showing that acting is not about your ego but about disappearing behind a character.

A good movie

“This movie is probably one of the most obscure movies directed by Bernardo Bertolucci but I was still eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, I have to admit that I actually had a hard time to get into this flick (in fact, I even dozed off a couple of times but maybe it was because it was so damn” read more

An average movie

“Since this movie was so poorly received, I didn't expect much from the damned thing but Nick, my step-son, was really eager to check it out. Well, in fact, probably because I had such low expectations but, to be honest, I thought it was actually not bad at all. I mean, this mummy concept remains rat” read more

The Outlaw Josey Wales
Notes: It is actually probably the first movie Clint Eastwood has directed which was really heralded by the critics and it is nowadays considered as a classic. Honestly, in my opinion, it is not the best Western he has directed ('Unforgiven' remains easily his best) and I frankly failed to see what was so great about it but it was still really enjoyable. You had basically all the standard elements : the farmer whose family has been raped and murdered and who becomes a ruthless killer, the Civil war, Indians, Bounty hunters,... Clint Eastwood gave his usual bad-ass performance and he was once again really awesome. The old Indian guy was pretty cool too. The funny thing is that Eastwood was not even supposed to be directing this flick but Philip Kauffman, the screenwriter, left at the beginning of the shooting and eventually it became one of the most highly regarded movies directed by Mr Eastwood.
