Hot Pursuit
Notes: Basically, they went for some kind of lame female remake of 'Midnight Run', a classic from the 80's which I already barely enjoyed. To be honest, I don't think that anything really worked in this movie. First of all, I do believe that Witherspoon is a decent actress but she was actually rather weak here. I mean, the OCD aspect of her character was not so bad but she played one of the least convincing cops I have ever seen or maybe it was just that her character was rather poorly written. Eventually, I think it would have worked better if she would been a really great cop. Anyway, if eventually Sofia Vergara ends up being the one giving the better performance, you should know you are in trouble. I mean, she wasn't great at all but, at least, she was more convincing than Witherspoon. Should I also mentioned that none of the supporting characters was entertaining at all?

A good movie

“Since it was the last movie directed by Alex van Warmerdam that I had to see, I was really eager to watch the damned thing. The first thing I enjoyed was how van Warmerdam had improved as a director. Indeed, this movie was very well directed, especially visually speaking, and it seemed that the guy ” read more

Sweet Sweetback
Notes: Basically, with this movie, it was a similar situation that we had with ‘Ed Wood’ which was a great movie about the making-off of ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’ which was pretty awful. I mean, this movie was not as bad as ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’ was but, to be honest, it wasn’t really good either. Indeed, half of it was about Sweetback running around and the other half was pretty much impossible to follow. Furthermore, it was rather poorly shot with some weak performances. And, yet, while watching this flick, you shouldn’t forget that it was a huge milestone. Indeed, pretty much like ‘Black Panther’ released in 2018 displayed that there could be successful blockbusters with an all black cast and crew, this movie broke many stereotypes concerning the black folks and even launched the Blaxploitation genre. Furthermore, making this movie was difficult, mostly on a financial level but not only, and this struggle also deserves some respect.

“I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again. I remember very well when I first heard of this movie. The Last Picture Show
Notes: First of all, it is thanks to this movie that Jeff Bridges' career really took off and it was just really neat to see him when he was much younger (and, apparently, already very talented) . Basically, it is one of those movies where nothing much really happen and nothing much is even told. I know, it doesn’t sound really sound really exciting but, basically, it is way more nuanced than your usual flick and you had to carefully analyse the body language and the looks that the characters give to each other to really understand what's going on (I’m not sure I did but just to follow them was quite spellbinding). For Peter Bogdanovich, this movie was a huge breakthrough and, at the time, he was hailed as the next best thing but, even though he was quite productive in the 70’s, none of his other features managed to reach this level of awesomness.

A good movie

“Since ‘Grimm’ turned out to be rather disappointing, I did lower my expectations for this movie. Fortunately, Alex van Warmerdam made a nice come-back with this movie and, even though it was still far from being his best movie,  I still enjoyed most of it. Basically, it all started as a rather ” read more

Waiter (2006)
Original Title: 'Ober' Directed by: Alex van Warmerdam With: Alex van Warmerdam, Thekla Reuten Plot: Edgar is a waiter in a mediocre restaurant, where clients and even his mistress prove abusive, while his sick wife and criminal neighbors are no better. How bad it gets is a matter of discussion.

Mother!
chosen by Johan Notes: To be honest, following the extremely polarizing responses towards this movie, I became slightly worried but since I'm always looking for something really challenging, this movie turned out to be the right choice. First of all, I have to admit it, it was a difficult movie to read as the whole thing was just so bizarre and chaotic and I can imagine that not everyone might be able to connect with this picture. But that was also the real beauty of it, the fact that you could give it pretty much any meaning you want. Indeed, someone might think that it is a story about motherhood, some others might say it is about how chaotic our society and way of life has become. As far as I was concerned, it felt like a fascinating and endless nightmare, the way everything seemed familiar and yet odd at the same time and the way the main character seemed to be a mere spectator with no control over the events happening in front of her. Their world kept shifting, unfolding and exploding with some continuous random small or big events which felt really reminiscent to a nightmare, at least, to me, and this process was quite spellbinding to behold. Directed by: Andy Muschietti ('Mama') With: Bill Skarsgård Was the original - It (1990) - worth a look? Even though the directing and acting were nothing really amazing, it was still a fascinating story. Indeed, usually, I have a hard time to care about Stephen King's fantastic and horror stories, but this was absolutely a great story, easily one of King's best, and I might even consider reading the book at some point. And, of course, Tim Curry was just downright impressive and he delivered here one of the most unforgettable bad guys ever. Was this remake worth a look? In fact, I was supposed to see this movie when it was released but, at the last minute, Nick, my step-on, bailed out. Eventually, since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick, I was even more eager to check it out. Well, even though I did like it, somehow, it didn’t really completely blow me away though. Maybe it had to do with the fact that I saw that the acclaimed TV mini-series less than a year before but, in fact, with this version, they improved pretty much everything that was disappointing with the first version. Indeed, the directing was pretty good, the special effets were top-notch and the kids all gave some really solid performances. Concerning Bill Skarsgård, he gave a completely different performance than Tim Curry but he did a really fine job as well. So, it was all fine and, yet, the whole thing never really grabbed me. Maybe it was because I already knew where everything was leading to, maybe it was because it was too faithful to the book. Anyway, it was still a really solid horror flick though and it is definitely worth a look.
