An average movie

“I’m well aware that the Duplass brothers are the leaders of the mumblecore genre but I haven’t seen much of their work so far and since I didn’t care much for this movie, I’m not sure if I will make much of an effort to check the rest of their work.  To be honest, I’m not really sure what” read more

The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976)
Notes: To be honest, it has been ages since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Sometimes, when you check this list, you really wonder how and why some movies ended up in this list and this feature might seem like another odd choice. Indeed, John Cassavetes was never a mainstream director and this movie was definitely one of his more obscure directing efforts. And, yet, in this case, I still think that his movie has actually a legitimate spot. First of all, it is probably one of the greatest titles ever conceived but, beyond that, even though it probably didn’t reach the heights of ‘A Woman Under the Influence’ (which I still haven’t watched so far), the whole thing was still quite spellbinding to watch.

A good movie

“It’s only after watching about 10 movies directed by Jean-Luc Godard that I came to the conclusion that I’m actually not a huge fan of his work. Indeed, many years ago, I saw and really loved ‘A bout de souffle’ which is still one of my all-time favorie movies but everything else I have seen” read more

Network
Notes: What I loved the most about this movie was how it started as a really realistic look on how a TV network works and it was easily one of the best, or maybe the very best depiction of this world I have seen so far, but it became so much more. Indeed, they went so much further than that and, slowly, it became something rather insane. The chilling and at the same time fascinating thing was that all the crazy stuff while it was becoming more and more preposterous by the minute still felt possible somehow and it is considered by many as a prophetic movie. Eventually, the only thing that didn't really work for was the love story involving Diana and Max. I mean, I don't blame Faye Runaway and William Holden, they were both pretty much pitch-perfect, but it was rather unbelievable that these two characters would extend their romantic relationship beyond their first one-night stand. Basically, they got involved only so the writer could give Max a nice juicy speech towards the end. Still, the material was just so dense and fascinating, it gave an amazing reflection on how most people of my generation have grown up in front of their TV sets and how we have been shaped by this medium.

Carrie (1976)
Notes: I already saw this movie but since it was ages ago, I was quite eager to check it out again at some point. To be honest, even though this movie had a really solid reputation, I didn't care much for the damned thing the first time around and, back then, I ended up with some mixed feelings about this movie. Well, I'm glad I gave it a second chance and I wonder why I was so critical about it. I mean, I still don't think it is anything really groundbreaking, the plot remains just too simplistic and the characters were barely developed but I have to agree that it is a pretty good horror flick with some solid directing by Brian De Palma and a very good performance by Sissy Spacek. Eventually, almost 40 years later, they came up with a remake with Chloë Grace Moretz playing the title character but, even though it seemed to be promising, it turned out to be a commercial and critical flop. Coming back to our main feature, I still don’t see what so great about this story but I have to admit that it is a decent horror movie.

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick and since there was a really neat cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. Taxi Driver
Notes: Honestly, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it whenever I get the opportunity. Anyway, in my opinion, it was definitely the first masterpiece produced by Martin Scorsese and Robert de Niro. I mean, 3 years before, they had already made 'Mean Streets' together and it was already a real breakthrough for both of them but it is with this movie that they really started to change cinema as an Art and they will keep doing it, at least twice again with 'Raging Bull' and 'Goodfellas'. Even if nowadays De Niro has lost his edge, he will still be remembered forever for this unforgettable piece of art. Indeed, he gave one of the best performances of his prestigious career and, plain and simply, one of the best performances ever given in a motion picture. For Scorsese, its status changed forever from promising young director to bonafide master. I mean, the whole thing was made with so much skills, every detail was closed to perfection and the story was just completely fascinating, a profound and dark study of the human soul.
