Faces (1968)
Notes: To be honest, even though I have seen this movie, it was really ages ago and I have to admit that I don’t remember much about the damned thing and I should definitely re-watch this movie at some point. Even though John Cassavetes had already been directing some movies already for a decade, it was eventually with this movie that he got his breakthrough as a director. Well, I always had a weak spot for his directing style, especially for his gorgeous black-and-white pictures (in fact, it would be his last black-and-white movie). Back in those days, Gena Rowlands was as usual quite gorgeous and spellbinding to behold but the other characters were also really interesting, even if they were all rather messed-up.

Planet of the Apes
Notes: First of all, I really enjoyed how they took their time at the beginning for the viewers and the characters to get acquainted with this strange world. Eventually, after waiting for 30 minutes, you finally see those apes and it was basically a huge slap in my face. In my memories, I thought they looked really cheesy but I was wrong, they looked just awesome. The way they managed to allow the simian characters to have some specific facial characteristics and being able to show their emotions was just mind-blowing. Especially considering that the make-up is now already 45 years old! Furthermore, when the apes show up, it was like a nightmare (‘Where did I land?!? Is it real?’). They further developped some very interesting idea about the future, science-fiction in general, parallel realities and many other things. The only major flaw in my opinion was how clueless Taylor actually is. I mean, how many clues does he actually need ? I mean, the vegetation, the horses, the language, the alphabet and many other things in this planet were exactly the same as on Earth but, still, he didn’t get it. Anyway, with the ending, it then completely made sense. And what an ending! Definitely one of the famous ever put on the silver screen and it was indeed downright awesome and shattering.

A good movie

“To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from this movie but since it was directed by Spike Lee, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, even though  I knew obviously what happened to Rodney King, I have to admit that I didn't really remember much of the details on how it all” read more

If.... (1968)

Rosemary
Notes: Basically, it was yet another masterpiece directed by Roman Polanski, it was a success when it was released and I think it definitely deserves its stellar reputation. Indeed, I'm a huge fan of this flick and it is absolutely one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I mean, the whole thing was so original, really unsettling and completely spellbinding from the beginning until the end. It was Polanski's first movie in America and he became right away a major director to reckon there as well. Eventually, the drama in his own private life would prevent him to have an even bigger impact on American cinema. Anyway, fortunately, he still managed to make this timeless classic. Eventually, even though I have sometimes a difficult time with older horror flicks, I have a huge weak spot for this one.

If.... (1968)
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick so maybe I should give it another try at some point. In fact, I remember actually very well the first time I saw it. Back in those days, I was in college, studying English, and an English exchange student showed us this movie while in class. The guy was really enthusiast, telling that it was a massive classic but, in fact, none of us had heard about if before. Eventually, I had a rather hard time to connect with the whole thing and, frankly, I thought it was slightly disappointing. It is always the tricky thing about watching a movie at school. Indeed, very often, it is just not the right setup to watch a movie, especially if it is something rather deep and/or subtle. Anyway, this movie is apparently regarded as one of the first that captured the counterculture movement of the late 60's which sounds really cool and which should have really appealed to me but, somehow, it didn’t really work for me. I don’t know, I guess it didn’t care much about the mix between realism and fantasy, it felt sometimes rather silly to me and something slightly more straightforward might have worked better for me.

An average movie

“To be honest, I didn’t expect much from this flick but since my wife really liked the 1st instalment and since this movie was available on Netflix, I thought we might as well check it out together. Well, I have to admit that I was actually positively surprised by this sequel and, in my opinion, it” read more
