Notes: Well, even if I really liked it, to be honest, I have to admit that it didn’t really blow me away though. The main issue, I guess, was that there were some big chunks of time during which nothing much really happened. Still, there is no doubt that Nicolas Roeg delivered here a fascinating movie above all thanks to some stellar cinematography and editing. Indeed, the whole thing started with the most nightmarish intro you could imagine. Afterwards, Venice had never look so spooky before and the damned thing was just seriously ominous and unsettling. Of course, the fact that most of the action took place abroad also increased the sense of alienation experienced by the two main characters. On top of that, Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie also gave some of their best performances and got involved in one of the most notorious sex scenes ever made. It’s interesting that many viewers consider it as one of the best horror movies when in fact it is clearly really different than your average horror flick. Eventually, I think I should rewatch this movie at some point to make up my mind for good about the damned thing. Anyway, it still a really strong psychological thriller.

A good movie

“First of all, I thought it was pretty neat to see another movie directed by François Ozon less than a year after watching his previous directing effort. On top of that, I actually enjoyed it more than 'Frantz' as this movie was more a typical Ozon feature dealing with his usual twisted characters w” read more

A classic

“Since this movie is a classic, of course, I was l really eager to check it out. Obviously, it was a major inspiration for Quentin Tarantino when he made 'Inglourious Basterds' and you could even argue that this movie is actually superior to Tarantino's movie. Indeed, the script might be more simple ” read more

A good movie

“Since I have a weak spot for Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley and since this movie seemed to have a decent reputation, I was really eager to check it out. Well, at first, it seemed to be really promising. Indeed, even though it is usually a rather annoying gimmick, I really liked how they displayed ” read more

Day for Night
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. By now, I have seen most of the movies directed by François Truffaut but, even though it is his one of his most critically acclaimed features, I still had a hard time to connect with the damned thing. I mean, it was well done and fairly intriguing but I’m afraid it was still too abstact for me and, to be honest, it all felt rather pretentious to me. The other tricky thing with this rather artistic approach is that you never really get to know the characters involved and you don’t really get a plot to hang onto. On the other hand, I was really young when I first saw it so I should definitely check it out again at some point to make up my mind about the damned thing.

Mean Streets (1973)
Notes: Basically, after struggling for many years, Martin Scorsese finally managed to get his breakthrough. Of course, Robert De Niro was involved and he would also get his breakthrough thanks to this movie. Honestly, it has been years since I saw this one and it definitely needs a re-watch. I don't think it is one of Scorsese's best movies. Eventually, he would make ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘Raging Bull’, ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Casino’ and those are only some of the movies he would direct with De Niro so that’s rather unfair to compare this movie to such impressive classics but it was still really solid. Above all, with this movie, you were able to witness the birth of one of the greatest American directors that ever lived. The most interesting aspect, in my opinion, was how gritty the whole thing was and how genuine it felt. Indeed, so far, most gangsters have been rather glamorized but, here, they were displayed as human beings, albeit twisted but still human which was really refreshing. This attention in constructing some fully-fledged characters would become a trademark in Scorsese's work.

A good movie

“Not to be confused with ‘Howl's Moving Castle’, another movie directed Hayao Miyazaki, to be honest, even if I was really eager to check this movie, I still struggled to get into the damned thing. I mean, you have to agree that the beginning was pretty much a huge mess during which most of the m” read more

Double Lover
chosen by Wilma Notes: First of all, I thought it was pretty neat to see another movie directed by François Ozon less than a year after watching his previous directing effort. On top of that, I actually enjoyed it more than 'Frantz' and this movie was more a typical Ozon feature dealing with his usual twisted characters with some rather dubious promiscuous sexuality. Indeed, most of the movie was a very entertaining and intriguing mystery and, for a very long time, I was wondering how it would end (personally, I was toying for a while with the idea that Paul and Louis were actually one guy having a double life). Unfortunately, Ozon had to wrap everything up at some point and, like most similar thrillers, it was rather weak, I'm afraid. Indeed, after all, it turned out that the main character we even crazier than we first thought and that she imagined/fantasized the whole thing up. It was a rather weak choice because, as a viewer, you feel cheated after investing yourself for so long in the characters and what they were going through. It was also a really easy way out for the director. Still, even if the end didn't really work for me, the rest of the movie was fine, it looked really neat and both Marine Vacth and Jérémie Reinier should be praised as they delivered some really strong performances.
