A good movie

“I had already seen this movie but since it was ages ago and since I had this movie on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. Well, to be honest, I always had some mixed feelings about this movie. I mean, if you would compare it to all the garbage Robert De Niro is making nowadays or any avera” read more

An average movie

“I had no idea what to expect from this movie but since I had seen all the other movies directed by Chris Weitz and since it sounded intriguing, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though Roger Ebert was apparently quite enthusiastic  (he gave give this movie a score of 3.5 stars), in” read more

Soldier of Orange (1977)
Notes: In the Netherlands, it is a huge classic and it is broadcasted on TV at least twice or three times a year. I mean, most of Paul Verhoeven's movies are more or less controversial but this one is usually considered a Dutch national treasure. It was, at the time, the most expensive Dutch movie ever made and it is indeed a very well made WWII feature with a gripping story, some decent directing and some very good actors. At some point, such actors like Alec Guinness, David Niven, Julie Christie, Henry Fonda or Charlotte Rampling were attached but, probably for some budgetary reasons, they didn't show up after all. Instead, Paul Verhoeven was yet again working with Rutger Hauer (he wasn't in fact his first choice but Hauer gave apparently a great audition) and it is a real shame that they didn't get along while making 'Flesh & Blood' in 1985 as they would never make another movie together.

A good movie

“To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from this flick. Indeed, I was browsing through the movies in Netlix and I came across this movie which sounded actually really lame. But then, I noticed that Johnny Depp was involved so I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, it was ju” read more

The Tree of Wooden Clogs (1978)
Notes: Unfortunately, Netflix really screwed up the aspect ratio for this movie so, unfortunately, I didn’t really have the best viewing conditions. On top of that, it was a 3 hours long very contemplative movie with no plot whatsoever so it turned out to be rather challenging. Anyway, the end result was basically some hyper realistic portrait of the peasants life in Italy at the end of the 19th Century (in fact, all the actors were some peasants coming from the region where it was filmed). Well, I guess it is a matter of taste as the material can be rather difficult to digest since not only you don’t have a plot but you don’t get to know any of the members of the 4 families working at this farm. There was also no political or social judgment on their predicament and, if you might expect their landlord to be turned into some kind of bad guy, well, it wasn’t the case after all. Eventually, you had only two dramatic events that took place, First, there was a diseased cow who miraculously got better and, later on, one of the families got kicked out because the father cut down some tree which seemed rather harsh. Anyway, these were tough times, that’s for sure, and you can understand that most of them were deeply pious since their situation was so bleak that religion was the only thing meaning that someone or something might actually care about their wretched lives.

A good movie

“It had been a while since I saw a movie directed by Jean-Luc Godard and since this one had a decent reputation, I  was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, I have to admit that I ended up with some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, it was definitely more watchable that the ” read more

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, it turned out to be pretty neat, that’s for sure. The Deer Hunter (1978)
Notes: The 70’s are usually considered the Golden Age of American cinema and, at the time, the studios were willing to give a lot of money and some amazing amount of freedom to directors such as Francis Ford Coppola to do whatever they wanted. Well, Michael Cimino managed to single-handedly halt this blessed period with ‘Heaven’s Gate’ which turned out to be a disaster, financially and critically. His career would never recover and since then the American movie production has been ruled by blockbusters and it won’t change anytime soon. It is a real shame because the movie he made before, the movie he should be remembered for, was an amazing piece of work. Indeed, it easily belongs to the best movies about the Vietnam war like ‘Apocalypse Now’, ‘Platoon’ and ‘Full Metal Jacket’. Basically, even though the scope and amount of details were quite impressive, Cimino managed to keep an amazing rhythm. I was also impressed about its perfect flow, how it took the time to show the life of these young men living a simple but happy and carefree life. Then, they were sent to somen alien land and basically went through hell. Eventually, the Russian roulette scenes have become really iconic and you could literally see Christopher Walken’s character mentally melting down in front of you.

Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Notes: To be honest, pretty much like with 'Night of the Living Dead', even though I did like the damned thing, I can't say I found it really great though. In fact, I thought it was better than the first installment, sharper with a nice combination of horror, humor and satirical critic on our consumerist society. The main issue for me was the rather average acting and the directing which could have been better. Both were actually better in the remake in my opinion. In fact, I can't actually say which one was better between this original version directed by George A. Romero and the remake directed by Zack Snyder. The remake looked better but it was also a rather standard action flick, lacking the wit and originality of this first version. I guess, like 'Night of ...', when it came out, it must have been quite a shock for the audience because they never had seen anything like this before. Personally, I think it has actually lost a little bit of its impacts nowadays. Eventually, in my book, it is not really a masterpiece but it is still pretty good and it remains a classic.
