Sleuth (1972)
Notes: In fact, I first saw the remake directed by Kenneth Branagh about 7 years ago and, even though this remake didn’t get much love, I thought it was a decent watch. Well, I understand now why most of the viewers didn’t care for Branaggh's version though since this classic was indeed miles better. I’m also glad that I saw this remake such a long time ago because, this way, I didn’t remember some crucial details. However, I wish I did see the damned thing with some subtitles as the dialogues were amazing but sometimes slightly difficult to follow, especially since English is not my mother-tongue. Anyway, the whole thing was just fascinating with 2 great (or should I say 3) performances from Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine who were both at the top of their game. Eventually, even though you spend more than 2 hours with only 2 actors in one single location, it was yet just so fascinating and spellbinding to behold.

An average movie

“To be honest, I have no idea why I actually ended up watching this flick. Indeed, the director was rather obscure, there was no really interesting actors involved and the whole thing seemed to be rather lame. Still, somehow, the damned thing was on my ‘to-watch’ list somehow so I thought I might” read more

The Harder They Come
Notes: Since I’m a huge Reggae fan, of course, I had to watch this movie at some point. Eventually, 40 years later, it might look pretty cheap and since it was pretty much the very first movie of this kind ever produced in Jamaica, the directing and acting were sometimes rather weak due to some lack of experience. Still, it was a huge box-office hit when it was released in Jamaica. Indeed, it was focusing on a black guy, speaking with the heavy Jamaican accent, going through some realistic hardship so it was highly recognizable for the local audience. You might argue that the plot was rather straightforward but the bleak and realistic approach was really neat. Furthermore, as any decent Reggae fan, I really loved the soundtrack with the major classic title song done by Jimmy Cliff himself, who also played the main character in this movie. Unfortunately, even though Perry Henzell was quite eager to direct some other Jamaican productions after this one, he always struggled to find some financing and managed to make only one other directing effort.

"@eddiewine, so , you should be happy that I finally saw 'Pusher' and its sequels... But, to be honest, to compare these movies to Bergman's work is rather ridiculous"

Pusher II
Original Title: 'Pusher II' Country: Denmark Directed by: Nicolas Winding Refn With: Mads Mikkelsen Plot: Tonny is released from prison - again. This time he has his mind set on changing his broken down life, but that is easier said than done. Note: Well, to be honest, even though I had some high expectations and even expected this movie to be an improvement on its predecessor, I thought it turned out to be actually a slight step down. It was still pretty good though thanks to some solid directing and I really liked the same dark and gloomy mood.

A good movie

“Since I really enjoyed ‘Pusher’, I was quite eager to check this follow-up. Apparently, after his 2 next directing efforts turned out to be some failures, especially ‘Fear X’ which made his film company go bankrupt, Winding Refn did pretty much the same thing Sam Raimi did with 'Evil Dead II” read more
