An average movie

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Hugh Jackman, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it was really similar to 'Cool Runnings', that's for sure, in fact, the Jamaican bobsled team was involved in the same Olympic games as Eddie Edwards was. ” read more

Manhattan (1979)
Notes: Back in the 90’s, I was a huge fan of Woody Allen. Indeed, every year, I went to see his latest directing effort in the movie theater and I tried to watch most of his older movies as well. However, after all these years, I came to the conclusion that it's just too bad that the guy keeps making a movie every single year. Indeed, basically, it is basically impossible to produce a great picture EVERY freaking year. Instead, he basically settles with an average movie which is just very sad. However, a long time ago, at the end of the 70's, this director was pretty much on fire and he made his best movies. This flick is definitely one of them and it is a great classic. I mean, the structure is similar to his recent work (hell, he basically always uses the same structure…) but the huge difference is that he managed to create some really fascinating 3 dimensional characters and, back in those days, no one less than Allen could write such amazing and hilarious dialogues.

A very good movie

“Even though it is a rather obscure feature, since I kept hearing some great things about this flick, my father especially loved it, I was really eager to check the damned thing. Well, I wasn’t disappointed, that’s for sure. To be honest, I still think the structure was actually rather straightfo” read more

Embrace of the Serpent
Original Title: 'El abrazo de la serpiente' Directed by: Ciro Guerra Plot: The story of the relationship between Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and last survivor of his people, and two scientists who work together over the course of 40 years to search the Amazon for a sacred healing plant. Note: The thing I probably loved the most was this character, Karamakate. Basically, you get to see 2 versions of this guy and, both times, this man was just so complex. Indeed, instead of going for the all wise and mighty native, the makers showed a rather flawed character and that made him even more interesting to behold. Indeed, at some point, you get to see one of the explorers, Theo von Martius, telling him that he is actually crazy, living on his own like this in the jungle and even full of sh*t with his weird rules and those moments were just priceless.

Notes: To be honest, I still think the structure was actually rather straightforward though. Indeed, it was pretty much following the standard road-trip formula with the traditional rules of the genre including 2 characters from different backgrounds clashing during their travel. Still, beside this rather standard structure, it was such a fascinating and rather unique look on the Amazon and the people living there. Above all, the thing I probably loved the most was this character, Karamakate. Basically, you get to see 2 versions of this guy and, both times, this man was just so complex. Apocalypse Now
Notes: What I find really difficult with this movie, is to judge it as it is without thinking about how messed up the production was. Indeed, the behind-scenes details have become pretty much as fasmous as the movie itself but we shouldn’t forget that this flick was on its own quite brilliant already. Through the years, the Vietnam war has been a big source of inspiration for the American directors and, in this genre, it must be one of the best (I still prefer ‘Platoon’ though). To be honest, it is not the easiest film to digest but, after multiple re-watches, there are still many things to get from it. Eventually, for Coppola, who spent 16 gruling months shooting this flick, spending pretty much all his money, losing about 45 kilos while filming, even threatening suicide several times during the making of the film, it seems that the film permanently burned him creatively and he never managed to make again something so amazing during the next 35 years.

A very good movie

“I remember very well when this movie was released. Back then, I was about 13-14 years, it was a big critical success and it even won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. And yet, even though I have always been eager to check this movie, it eventually took me more than 20 years to finally wat” read more

A good movie

“Since I really loved 'The Spectacular Now', I was really eager to watch James Ponsoldt's previous directing effort. It's only later on that I discovered that both movies were dealing with alcoholism but while 'The Spectacular Now' was probably one of the most original movies I have seen dealing with” read more

It wasn't Ponsoldt's directing debut. His first movie was 'Off the Black' released in 2006.

“Following the massive failure of 'Crimewave', apparently, Sam Raimi thought that the only thing that could revive his career was to go back to his classic directing debut.
