An average movie

“When I first heard about this movie, I had actually some high hopes. Indeed, for the first time around in almost 20 years, Clint Eastwood was finally playing the lead for another director than himself so I thought that if he would make such a come-back, it would be only for something really interest” read more

"@Bml93, I guess it is a matter of taste. As far as I'm concerned, I didn't care much for any of the remakes you mentioned, at least, among the ones I have seen so far. "

Notes: I think this movie must be the only one Akira Kusosawa made outside of Japan (in fact, he already tried to make 2 movies in the USA, ‘Runaway Train’ and ‘Tora! Tora! Tora’, but both projects turned out to some massive disasters and he left both of them). Back then, Kurosawa was going through a really difficult period as his last movie ‘Dô desu ka den’ turned out to be a major box-office failure. In fact, the situation was so bad that he was not able to get any money anymore to make something else and it is rather sad to think that the best Japanese director wouldn’t get any support in his home country. As a result, he got so depressed that he even attempted suicide and, even though he survived, it was unclear for a while if he would even ever make another movie. Eventually, a Soviet studio contacted him to see if he would be interested in making a movie for them and this feature was the end-result. Eventually, it turned out to be one of my favorite movies directed by Kurosawa as it was a great epic with some strong directing and a spellbinding story.

A very good movie

“Since I had heard some interesting things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, even though I had heard about Sarah Palin, I couldn’t really remember what happened with her 10 years ago so it was pretty neat to discover what exactly went down at the time.  Eventually,” read more

Notes: Can you imagine this? Watching the most difficult movie from the most difficult director I know? The funny thing is that, with a running time of less than 2 hours, it was rather short, at least, for a Tarkovsky movie. Basically, the main difference with the other movies directed by the Russian master was that, even though they were all also extremely opaque and intricate, they were at least linked to some genre (WWII drama, medieval epic, Science-Fiction), even if Tarkovsky didn’t care much about the usual trademarks linked to these different genres. In this case, he went this time for something completely freewheeling and I can imagine that it can be quite fascinating and exhilarating if you manage to get into in his flow and state of mind but, to be honest, I really struggled with the damned thing. Seriously, through the whole duration, I was scratching my head wondering what the hell was happening in front of my eyes and it was only afterwards, much later on, that I finally managed to get more or less some understanding about this movie. Basically, it was about a man that you never see and sometimes hear talking reflecting on his youth and his relationship with his mother and reflecting on his present and his relationship with his ex-wife. The fact that both women were played by the same actress probably didn’t help to make the whole thing less opaque and confusing but this casting actually somehow made sense since, on a subconscious level, all our partners are somehow some kind of reflection of our mothers. I also wonder if the black-and-white scenes were dealing with his past and the color scenes were dealing with his present but it sounds way too easy and conventional for this director.

A good movie

“Ever since I saw 'Little Odessa' and really loved the damned thing, I have been faithfully following James Gray but, to be honest, I alway had a hard time to really care about all the movies he made afterwards. This movie was unfortunately another example. I mean, like his previous directing efforts” read more

Barry Lyndon
Notes: Amongst all the tremendous masterpieces directed by the great Stanley Kubrick, I have noticed that it seems to be slightly overlooked which is just too bad. Indeed, it is actually a fascinating picture and I would go as far as saying that it is probably the best costume drama I have ever seen. First of all, it is really a gorgeous movie. Seriously, virtually every scene, every single shot was some kind of painting (check the screenshot above) and I had very rarely seen anything like this before. Furthermore, I thought that this tale was also quite spellbinding to behold. I have to admit that I usually have a hard time to care for this genre because it usually deals with the so-called difficult love life of the aristocrats. However, in this story, they took a really different approach and most of the characters, especially the main character, were actually unlikable but, as a result, they became much more interesting to follow.

A very good movie

“Even though this movie is rather obscure, somehow, it still managed to get included in the IMDb top 250 so I was quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, I can't really remember the last time I was so impressed by an anthology of short movies like this one. Indeed, except for 'Bombita' which w” read more

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Notes: I remember very well when I saw this flick. Indeed, it was a while back, I met this dude who was just as a crazy as I was about movies and when we met, we would be constantly talking about our various favorite pictures. At some point, we agreed that he should come over to watch some movies together and we ended up having my longest binge-watching night I ever had. Indeed, we watched, if I recall it correctly, about 6 movies starting from 21.00 until 6 o’clock in the morning. It was pretty glorious and, at some point during the night, we ended up watching this cult-classic. According to my buddy, it was one of the best movies ever made and I just had to watch it. Eventually, I was indeed quite impressed. Obvisously, I had never seen anything like this before and, only for that, it should definitely get some credit. Still, I have to admit that I wasn’t really blown away by the whole thing. I mean, basically, it was original, weird and quite fun but it is still an acquired taste and I didn’t find it really hilarious or massively entertaining to be honest. Still, there is no denying that it is a huge cult-classic.

A classic

“Of course, I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. Well, it is probably Roman Polanski's most famous movie and, I think it completely deserves its stellar reputation. Indeed, it is basically a great mix of a tradition” read more

A good movie

“Since I always had a weak spot for Bernardo Bertolucci's work, I was quite eager to check this movie. Well, even though it worked better than 'La tragedia di un uomo ridicolo', I have to admit that I still had a hard time to get into this movie. Eventually, I'm not sure what bothered me the most bet” read more
