Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should give it another chance at some point. Back in the 80’s , there was a new French wave of directors called the ’Cinéma du Look’ with Luc Besson, Léo Carax and Jean-Jacques Beineix. Besson is obviously the one who had the biggest critical and definitely commercial success and Beineix probably the one who got the least success of the trio. Anyway, since this directing debut had a solid reputation, at least, in France, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, even though it was visually pretty neat and even though I did like the tone, I had a rather hard time to care about the story and the characters involved. That was apparently the main thing about the ’Cinéma du Look’, those filmmakers apparently put the focus more on the style than on the narrative and I thought it was pretty obvious with this movie. Later on, Beineix would come up with ‘37°2 le matin’ which would be one of the biggest French cult-classics released in the 80’s but the rest of his career would turn out to be rather underwhelming. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, even though I thought it was rather disappointing, it was still a decent watch.

“Before this movie was released, there was a decent buzz about this movie and many hoped that it would become the best adaptation of Stephen King’s famous book. Unfortunately, just before it was released, it was apparently butchered by the studio (allegedly , they would have removed up to 45 minute” read more

Hans Rudolf "H.R." Giger (5 February 1940 – 12 May 2014) was a Swiss surrealist painter, whose style was adapted for many forms of media, including record-albums, furniture and tattoo-art.
The Zurich-based artist was best known for airbrush images of humans and machines linked together in a cold 'biomechanical' relationship. Later he abandoned airbrush work for pastels, markers or ink. He was part of the special effects team that won an Academy Award for design work on the film Alien. In Switzerland there are two theme-bars that reflect his interior designs, and his work is on permanent display at the H.R. Giger Museum at Gruyères.

Notes: Since I'm a huge fan of Indiana Jones, of course, I just love this flick. Even though it is not my favorite one in this franchise (that would be the 3rd installment), it is still quite awesome. Indeed, when I was a kid, I saw it so many times with my father but even twenty years later, I keep watching it from time to time and it is still so damned entertaining. Basically, with this movie, Steven Spielberg set up the golden rules for this mighty franchise and he introduced to us one of the greatest most iconic characters in motion picture history. Indeed, even though Harrison Ford was not even their first choice, he completely nailed this part and managed to create a character who was even more awesome than Han Solo which was quite an achievement. Anyway, not only it is technically pretty much flawless, it is also just a plain fun movie and it is completely entertaining from the very first minute until the very last seconds.

Notes: Well, I thought it was quite amazing and it was much better than anything directed before or after by Wolfgang Petersen. Anyhow, I always thought that there was something fascinating about movies dealing with submarines and this one is by far the best one. Indeed, since then, it has been imitated numerous times but this feature remains the reference in its genre and I will remain so a for a long time. Basically, the directing was amazing and, like I said before, you could argue that Wolfgang Petersen never reached these heights again in his career. In my opinion, the mood was intense, there was a completely nail-biting tension and I was on the edge of my seat from the beginning until the last seconds. At the end of the day, it is not only a great submarine movie, it is basically one of the best war features ever made.

“Since I kept hearing some really good things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out but, to be honest, I thought it would be just another drama about a young woman held in captivity. Well, what I didn't expect is that it would turn out to be the best movie in this genre. Indeed, the who” read more

Notes: I have to admit it, at first, I kept wondering, like many other viewers I presume, why she didn't try to escape during these 7 long years. Well, first of of all, it is easier said than done. Indeed, she would have to miraculously find a code that a kidnapper could easily change on a regular basis and, apparently, there was also another door that could be opened only from the outside. But, most of all, she made the choice to survive, to stay alive, instead of risking it all with some hazardous escape attempt. Then, when her son was born, to care for him and to protect him became obviously a priority and it's only when she realized that he couldn't stay any longer that she finally came up with a plan which was still extremely dangerous. But this movie goes so much beyond that, it shows how they managed to live in confinement for all these years, how this mother still managed to give her boy a life when she was completely hopeless and how they both struggled to get back into the 'real' world. Especially for this young kid, he never knew anything else and, suddenly, within minutes, his world was completely torn apart and the end-result was just crushing to behold.

Notes: I wasn't disappointed and it turned out to be easily the smartest movie released in 2014. Indeed, even though it was visually quite appealing, it was above all the fascinating ideas developed in this picture that really appealed to me. As a matter of fact, just a few weeks ago, I saw a talk show on TV where they were saying that, indeed, some big companies like Google are currently investigating on AI and we should expect some major breakthrough in this area in the near future. In this movie, you could see already the issues we would have to face if we would come up with a very intelligent AI. For example, how could we know what an AI is actually exactly thinking? What would be its purpose in life, a concept we humans are constantly struggling with? And most important, what would be then our purpose?

Notes: Well, this movie gave pretty much gave me the same feeling I had while watching 'Mary and Max', another very original and very well received animated feature. Indeed, with this movie, just like with 'Mary and Max', while I really admired the work done, I still had a hard time to really connect with the damned thing. The biggest obstacle, at least, as far as I was concerned, was the fact that the main character was such a tedious and unpleasant guy constantly complaining about everything. To make things worse, while the dude was on a business trip, after he failed to hook up with his ex after he dumped her 10 years before without any explanation, the very same evening, he still managed to cheat on his wife with some random guest at his hotel. I mean, sure, it was refreshing that the main character was not one of the usual pretty faces with a perfect behavior but I can't say I really cared about him and what he was going through. And, yet, like most of of the work delivered by Charlie Kaufman, it was something so weird and original, it was still quite spellbinding to behold.
