An average movie

“In fact, I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well give it a 2nd chance. First of all, the whole thing actually definitely had some potential and it could have been a really neat action flick. Indeed, I always had a weak spot for movi” read more

A good movie

“Since this movie received some poor reviews (which I didn't read before watching this flick), I thought it might turn out to be another underwhelming super-hero flick but I still wanted to check it out. Eventually, it turned out to be pretty cool and it seems that there is still some hope for the DC” read more

An average movie

“As you may have noticed, I’m a very obsessive movie watcher and one of my very first obsessions was/is Robert De Niro. I just love this actor and I have been watching many of this movies during the last 20 years (I have seen 72 of them so far). However, since the beginning of 2000's, he has made a” read more

Dances with Wolves
Notes: I remember it very well when this movie was released and I’m pretty sure I actually saw it in the movie theater when it was released. In fact, many people thought it might crash and burn critically and commercially but it turned out to be an overwhelming success after all. Personally, I always had some rather mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, sure, it was rather well made, it looked really nice and the whole thing was quite uplifting but, after portraying the Indians for decades as some kind of bloodthirsty savages, suddenly, it became the other way around and they became some of the wisest people on Earth. But of course, no one seemed to be wiser than the white man played by Kevin Costner and this movie was the beginning of a long succession of vanity projects that would eventually pretty much ruin his career (see also,‘Wyatt Earp’, ‘Waterworld’ and ‘The Postman’).

A good movie

“I already saw this movie but, for some reason, I was quite eager to check it out again. In fact, the main reason to watch this movie is because it was with this movie that Alicia Vikander got her international breakthrough. On top of that, since this movie had a really good reputation, my expectatio” read more

A Royal Affair
Original Title: 'En kongelig affære' Country: Denmark Directed by: Nikolaj Arcel With: Alicia Vikander, Mads Mikkelsen Plot: A young queen, who is married to an insane king, falls secretly in love with her physician - and together they start a revolution that changes a nation forever. Note: It was probably one of the most ambitious Danish productions I have seen so far and it looked really neat and convincing but, I don’t know, even though the story was quite compelling, it was missing something or maybe, in the contrary, it was maybe too much. Indeed, the movie was not only about the love affair between the queen of Denmark with the king’s own doctor but also about the fact that both of them, the queen and the doctor, influenced the king to make some big reforms in Denmark. Well, while this mix might sound appealing, I don’t think it completely worked though.

A classic

“To be honest, it has been a while since I saw this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. In France, it is a massive classic and it was a big critical and commercial success when it was released. Indeed, it was a prestigious production involving the adaptation of a French literary class” read more

Bridge of Spies
It was actually directed by Steven Spielberg, the Coen brothers wrote the screenplay. To be honest, I thought it was actually slightly disappointing. I mean, sure, Spielberg knows how to direct a movie so it was technically well made and visually appealing but I actually had a hard time to really care about this story. First of all, the first half, when Donovan was first fighting for Abel’s rights felt rather pointless and hypocritical. Indeed, I thought it was pointless because the movie was never about if Abel should have more rights or not, it was about exchanging him with an American spy. It felt also hypocritical because it is really easy to point fingers about how the American people used to intolerant 50 years ago. Then, the 2nd half about the actual exchange was better but still not really amazing. In this case, the issue was that the outcome was already obvious from the start and even though they tried to convince the viewers that everything might go south at some point, I never felt any real danger at any point.

The BFG
Cast : Mark Rylance, Rebecca Hall, Bill Hader What was it about? A girl named Sophie encounters the Big Friendly Giant who, despite his intimidating appearance, turns out to be a kind-hearted soul who is considered an outcast by the other giants because, unlike them, he refuses to eat children. My two cents: Well, I didn’t care much about the damned thing, even less than ‘Bridge of Spies’. Basically, I thought it was in fact seriously boring. First of all, I have to admit it, I always had a hard time with Roald Dahl’s work and, except for a few stories he made like ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ or ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, all his tales just really bored me and this movie was not different, I’m afraid. At least, the whole thing looked really neat and Spielberg definitely delivered some State-of-the-Art CGI. Indeed, those giants were quite amazing and Mark Rylance delivered once again a solid performance. Eventually, even though I thought it was seriously tedious, I guess it is still worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in Steven Spielberg’s work but I can't say I'm really surprised it turned out to be a flop when it was released. Total Recall
Notes: As a kid, I really loved this flick. Indeed, I remember it very well, back then, I thought it was a fascinating story and I had to watch it a couple of times before understanding it properly (give me a break... I was about 12 years old!). The best thing about this movie is that it works on so many levels. Basically, it is entertaining, it takes place on Mars, there are tons of nice special effects, some sexual tension and a rather thoughtful and intriguing plot. By now, I have watched all the movies directed by Paul Verhoeven and this one is one of his best and it might even be my favorite movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Many years later, they came up with a remake starring Colin Farrell and even though Farrell is a better actor, Schwarzenegger was actually more convincing. In my opinion, the original version worked better also because Paul Verhoeven didn't spend all his time with some action scenes but he also gave us some time to get know Doug Quaid giving us actually the opportunity to root for the guy.
