A very good movie

Notes: In my opinion, it is basically some kind of dark version of 'Fame' mixed with a nail-biting thriller. Still, even though J.K. Simmons was really amazing, giving the best performance of his career, they went really far with this character. I mean, the guy was just downright awful and, at some point, I started to have a hard time believing that someone would accept to be treated like that. But, basically, that's the whole point of this movie, is it all really worth it? For most of the duration of this movie, the answer would be resounding 'NO' and, then, they brought up this amazing ending with a music piece lasting almost 10 minutes with a solo drum of about 5 minutes. At that moment, you basically don't know anymore as the main character, also very played by Miles Teller, seemed to have reached another level of musical awesomeness, and then again, you start to think, maybe it was worth it after all.

A very good movie

“I actually saw this movie in the movie theater when it was released but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, after all these years, it is still one of Tim Burton's best efforts, definitely one of his most original project, and miles better tha” read more

Miss Peregrine
Cast: Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Samuel L. Jackson, Judi Dench, Rupert Everett, Terence Stamp What was it about? When Jacob discovers clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times, he finds Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. But the mystery and danger deepen as he gets to know the residents and learns about their special powers. My two cents: Apparently, this time, Tim Burton went for a YA novel adaptation which was not really a good idea since the genre has been milked-dry by now. Furthermore, they used the same terrible gimmick they used in so many other YA novels like ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Percy Jackson’ or ‘Narnia’ which is to make the character start in our world and then to bring him later on in some fantasy world. Even though it might be fine in a book, it almost never work with a movie because it takes forever for the story to finally get started. In this case, it was pretty terrible. I mean, I think it took the guy about one hour to get to this school/orphanage but, even when he got there, the story still didn’t really take off. Eventually, in spite of its flaws, the whole thing looked pretty neat so I guess it is still worth a look but it was definitely one of the weakest movies delivered by Tim Burton so far. "Wow... pretty impressive.... Now, I feel very bad that I haven't read any of these books (except for 'Le rouge et le noir')"

An average movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have this flick and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Still, I remember it pretty well, before it was released, there was a pretty good buzz about this flick. Indeed, after spending most of the 80’s and 90’s in some (usually really average) actio” read more

“I wonder if I saw this movie before or after the original version directed by Wim Wenders. I’m pretty sure that I saw this remake first though. Dangerous Liaisons
What is is about? It is the story of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two rivals (and ex-lovers) who use seduction as a weapon to humiliate and degrade others, all the while enjoying their cruel games and boasting about their manipulative talents. Personal note: To be honest, it took me a while to get into it but it was really worthwhile and the whole thing turned out to be quite spellbinding to read. I especially loved those seriously despicable characters. Quote: "When one woman strikes at the heart of another, she seldom misses, and the wound is invariably fatal."

A great classic

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie, like all the major masterpieces directed by Charles Chaplin, I should definitely re-watch it at some point. “From all the James Bond movies starring Sean Connery, this was probably the weakest one. A classic

“Since this movie won the Academy Award for the Best Picture, I was really eager to check it out but, for some reasons, it took me about 10 years to finally see the damned thing. Well, I can tell you, it was definitely worth the wait and this movie completely deserved its stellar reputation. Indeed, ” read more

A very good movie

“Ever since I saw ‘What's Eating Gilbert Grape’, I have been a big fan of Lasse Hallstrom and, for the last 20 years, I have been closely following his work. Akira (1988)
Notes: The first time I saw it, I was about 15 years old and it completely blew me my mind. Indeed, I had never seen anything like this before and I thought it was just fascinating (Eventually, I also bought the comic-books which I also highly recommend). Indeed, this animated movie was just so well done and it was definitely a milestone when it was made. The whole thing looked great (and still does 20 years later) but, above all, the story was just mesmerizing. I always had a weak spot for those post-apocalyptic features and, in my opinion, even though it is now more than 20 years old, it still feels really modern and edgy. Like 'Blade Runner', this flick could be released nowadays and nobody would realize it has actually been made decades ago. Yeah, it is that good.
