A good movie

“I remember very well when this movie came out in France. Indeed, before its release, there was quite some buzz. Since 'Delicatessen', the previous movie directed by Caro & Jeunet turned out to be a huge cult-classic in my home country, the expectations were really high concerning their follow-up” read more

Roger & Me
Notes: Nowadays, we don’t hear much from Michael Moore but there was some point that the guy was easily the most successful documentary maker in the world. I have always been a huge fan of his work but, at some point, his success was becoming so huge that Moore himself started to become some kind of pop-star and I’m afraid there was too much focus put on him than on his actual work. With this in mind, it was pretty cool to watch this directing debut. Indeed, back then, nobody knew who the hell was this guy and it was just really efficient and very often hilarious to see him confront some corporate figures about their wrongdoings. The strongest message of this movie, beside the fact that it might be manipulated or not, is that even though most of these huge US corporations make some profits, they still choose to fire all this people just to make an even bigger profit which shows how our world is working nowadays.

A good movie

“The day before, I just watched ‘Nous finirons ensemble’ with my wife and since we both enjoyed it, I thought I might rewatch this movie, especially since my wife didn’t see it. Well, I actually think that she enjoyed more the sequel but I think that both movies worked fine. I think that this f” read more

An average movie

“I wasn’t really expecting much from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for Barbet Schroeder’s work, I thought I might as well check it out.  Back then, Barbet Schroeder had a decent run in the USA (I especially loved 'Reversal of Fortune') and this movie would be one of the last he w” read more

Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989)
Notes: To be honest, it has been ages since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Since then, it has been considered a milestone in film history as it paved the way to most of the indie features that came afterwards. It was also the start of a really promising career for Steven Soderbergh who became, at only 26 years old, the youngest winner of the Palme D'Or at The Cannes Film Festival . I wonder if this movie really works 30 years later (Sodebergh thinks it didn’t grow old very well and he believes it is actually rather pretentious) but there was definitely something quite mesmerizing about the whole thing. Indeed, I always add a weak spot for movies about characters dealing with their sexual desires/obsessions/anxieties. Anyway, it’s such a shame that, afterwards, Steven Sodebergh would become such a workaholic as it didn’t have a really positive impact on his work.

The Red Turtle
chosen by Bea Notes: First of all, the whole thing was just gorgeous to look at but I wouldn't expect less from a Studio Ghibli production. Same thing about the soundtrack, it was just mesmerizing, and I always enjoyed a movie without any dialogue. Eventually, it was one of the most poetic movies I have seen for a very long time. And, yet, I have to admit that the whole thing kind of lost me when the turtle became a woman. I do understand that the makers had to do something otherwise it would have been just another tale about a stranded guy on a desert island but I wasn't completely sold. I mean, just before that, the guy actually killed this red turtle which was the only violent act through the whole movie but, somehow, even though what he did made sense (who wouldn't react like this in such a situation?), I wasn't so sure about the outcome though. I mean, it felt to me as if this man was somehow rewarded for killing this turtle by getting some really nice-looking red-haired woman which was slightly awkward. Or maybe the guy was just so traumatized about his actions and for being alone on this island that he ended up hallucinating and he then started a relationship with an actual red turtle. Anyway, the whole thing was quite fascinating and I will definitely keep thinking about it for the coming days. (Aug. 2016)
