Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Still, I remember it very well, when I was growing up in France in the 90’s, this movie was a major cult-classic and, with this in mind, I had some high expectations before watching the damned thing. Well, to be honest, even though it was pretty neat, I can’t say I was really blown away by this movie. I mean, sure, it was fairly entertaining but I never thought it was really hilarious. Basically, you have some daft characters doing all kind of silly things and while the fans will argue that the humor was pure genius, I’m afraid it is actually an acquired taste. Still, it is a pretty much a classic British comedy, no doubt about it.

Wow... That must be one of the very few positive reviews you have posted on this website... And, of course, it was for a movie which might be a classic but hardly an amazing deep masterpiece.

Notes: I have never been a fan of spoof movies but since it is a huge classic, I thought I would definitely enjoy this one. Eventually, I thought the whole thing was pretty disappointing... Of course, there were here and there some funny jokes but I can't say I was laughing throughout the whole thing. Maybe back then these jokes were timely but 25 years later, most of those jokes don't really work anymore. I guess it would be the same thing when people will watch 'Shrek' 25 years later, they will miss many pop-cultural jokes that were relevant when it came out. Furthermore, I find Leslie Nielsen more annoying than funny in his iconic part. I know, that's the whole point, he is supposed to be annoying but I didn't find him really funny, just plain stupid. Eventually, I spent most of the time watching the movie decrypting the jokes to get their meaning and I got most of them but my reaction was usually 'oh yeah! that's what they meant. Pretty clever, not bad, next joke...' and, once in a while, they would be something hilarious popping up and I would be laughing but that wasn't often enough.

Notes: To be honest, it has been ages since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Basically, it is a great movie about the love of movies. Back then, there was no television and you couldn't download movies so, the main source of entertainment was the movie theater and you actually physically had to go there, in the movies theaters. So, there was something really special about watching movies and this feature gave a really good idea about this feeling. Concerning Giuseppe Tornatore, he became instantly one of the greatest hopes in cinema but he would eventually never reach the status of some of the greatest Italian directors like Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti, Bernardo Bertolucci or Michelangelo Antonioni. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it is a really beautiful nostalgic picture and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
