An average movie

“Even though I have seen many movies, this must be one of the weirdest ones I have seen. First of all, even though it is easy to say that 5 years after this movie was released, it was pretty obvious that the whole thing was fake and I was rather surprised that Roger Ebert didn’t point it out in his” read more

A classic

“I have to admit it, it has been a while since I saw this one but I will definitely re-watch it as soon I get the opportunity. When talking about Lynch's career, it seems that this movie has been a little bit forgotten. Indeed, if you compare it to the movies more faithful to his directing style such” read more

A good movie

“Basically, it is another of those rather obscure French movies that almost no one has seen on Listal. In fact, I was rather surprised that it was so obscure because it was pretty famous when it was released in France back in those days. Indeed, even though Vanessa Paradis might be known in the rest ” read more

Jurassic Park
Notes: I must have been 13 or 14 years old when I saw this flick and I had the pleasure to see this in the movie theater. I must admit, I was quite blown away by its visual aspect. I mean, back then, there wasn't such an overdose of CGI like today, back then it was something new and it was just downright impressive. Actually, there was just 6 minutes of CGI and the rest was animatronics, just to give you an idea about the fact that wall-to-wall CGI is absolutely not needed. Anyway, this movie definitely belongs to the biggest classics directed by Spielberg and it was the highest grossing movie ever made until 'Titanic' came out. Honestly, even though I was completely blown away by the special effects, I can't say the same thing about the plot and the characters. I mean, even though the whole thing was very entertaining and kept me on the edge of my seat, it was still nothing extraordinary and all the characters were all really stereotypical and none of them was remotely interesting. But, damned, it was still awe inspiring to see for the very first time ever such realistic dinosaurs on the silver screen.

An average movie

“For some reasons, I actually ended up watching this flick in the movie theater when it was released and I wonder what made me choose this movie at the time. I guess, back in those days, I was watching maybe 3 movies every week in the movie theater so I wasn’t exactly really picky. Anyway, to be ho” read more

Dear Diary (1993)
Notes: I remember it quite well when it was released. Indeed, it was a critical success when it was released at the Cannes Film Festival and I was really eager to check it out. In fact, somehow, the whole thing did remind me of Woody Allen in the sense that it was very talkative but also very smart, at least, that’s my opinion. Basically, there was no plot whatsoever and, instead, the characters just kept talking, talking and talking again and it either bore you to death or it fascinates you. Well, I thought it was rather fascinating. Eventually, 8 years later, Moretti would come back to the Cannes Film Festival and would win this time the prestigious Golden Palm with ‘La stanza del figlio’ which was really good as well but I still preferred this movie though. Anyway, surprisingly, I have noticed that, after all these years, I haven’t seen many movies directed by this director which is too bad.

Wadjda
Original Title: 'Wadjda' Directed by: Haifaa Al-Mansour Plot: An enterprising Saudi girl signs on for her school's Koran recitation competition as a way to raise the remaining funds she needs in order to buy the green bicycle that has captured her interest. Note: Even though it was interesting, while watching the damned thing, I couldn't help thinking that, even though it was directed by a Saudi women, it still felt that it was giving a Western point of view on this strict Muslim culture. Basically, it gave a very bleak and sad view on the Saudi life, especially for the women and, even though it is probably true, it would have been nice to see something slightly more balanced. For example, towards the end, you get to see the main character reciting the Koran which seemed at first rather pointless and redundant but, eventually, it turned to be actually quite gorgeous and I think it would have worked better to show also such intriguing and positive aspects about this culture.

“I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. I guess back then I didn’t see ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ yet as both movies are actually terribly similar (the fact that the remake also starred a previous James Bomd actor probably didn’t h” read more

An average movie

“Since I always had a weak spot for Hugh Grant, I was quite eager to check this movie. Basically, ever since the massive success of ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’, Hugh Grant became a big star and the king of the romantic-comedy. Indeed, most of his following movies would be in this genre and he w” read more

The Lion King
Notes: Disney is right now going through another renaissance and the peak of this renaissance will probably be 'Frozen'. However, 20 years ago, they were also going through another glorious period like the current one and, at the time, this movie was their biggest one and, for many years, it had been the highest grossing animated feature ever made. Back then, I saw it in the theater but to be honest, I'm not exactly a huge fan and, from the same era, I think that 'Aladdin' (which was also a huge success when it was released but it has always been overshadowed by this classic) was actually much better. I mean, sure, it is definitely a solid feature, the animation was top-notch and, for once, Disney was creating something rather dark almost creating a Shakespearean tragedy ('Hamlet' was a big inspiration for this tale). Still, somehow, I had a hard time to connect with the whole thing. Maybe because I didn't really like the combination of musical songs side by side with some rather dramatic material (the songs were also not really amazing) or maybe it was because it was taking itself too seriously?
