Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

A good movie

“To be honest, I had no idea what this movie was about so I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the damned thing but since I’m a huge fan of Meryl Streep, I was quite eager to check it out. What makes this movie interesting is that it mixes 2 dramas, a modern one and a period piece, involving ” read more

A very good movie

“I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I was quite eager to check it out again. Following the really popular but also rather generic ‘Billy Elliot’, Stephen Daldry came up with this follow-up which was much more ambitious and it turned out to be another critical success. Well, I” read more

A good movie

“Since it is a rather obscure feature, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the damned thing but since I’m a huge fan of Roman Polanski, I was really eager to check it out. Basically, a year before,  Polanski just made ‘Repulsion’ with Catherine Deneuve. This movie turned out to be Polan” read more

Three Colours: Red (1994)
Notes: It has been a while since I have watched this flick and, to be honest, I think I might have been too young when I first watched it. Indeed, at around 14 years old, I started to watch the major classics and I watched them ferociously at a very quick pace. The problem is that, even if a movie is great, sometimes, the timing is not right and it goes way over your head and I think that’s what happened to me with this flick. Basically, it is full of symbolic and sub-text and, like I said before, I didn’t get much of it and it might need a re-watch at some point. In this prestigious trilogy directed by Kieslowski, this movie was the one which got the most praise but, in fact, it was actually my least favorite one. Indeed, this time, even though it was actually a pretty good movie, no doubt about it, I had a rather hard time to connect with the story and the characters involved.

Hail, Caesar!
Cast : Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Frances McDormand, Jonah Hill, Alison Pill, Christopher Lambert, Michael Gambon What was it about? A Hollywood fixer in the 1950s works to keep the studio's stars in line. My two cents: Well, to be honest, it wasn't really good. In fact, it was pretty much one of the Coen brothers's weakest efforts so far, I'm afraid. I mean, the whole thing looked fine and they had once again a really impressive cast at their disposal but this story was just rather boring. As a matter of fact, the plot was in fact really similar to the one they used for 'The Big Lebowski' as it was dealing with some rather pathetic kidnapping attempt and, in the process, they tried to throw at us all kinds of supposedly quirky and funny characters. Unfortunately, while 'The Big Lebowski' was just quite hilarious, this tale was on the other hand barely entertaining. Basically, from all these characters played by some really famous and usually talented actors, none of them was really interesting or fun, except for Alden Ehrenreich who was really the only one who managed to make his character work. “I have always find it rather weird that, when you check Tyler Perry's movies on Imdb, their ratings are always so damned low. I mean, he has got only one single directing effort, 'For Colored Girls', which did manage to reach a 6.0 rating and everything else is usually way down below. Anyway, I want” read more

A good movie

“Following the really strong 'X-Men: Days of Future Past', easily the best installment in this franchise, I was really eager to check this new sequel and I was hoping it would be at least just as good. “For many women between 30 and 70 years old, this movie is a major classic. “Since I always had a weak spot for Clint Eastwood, I was really eager to check this movie. On top of that, it was the last movie Eastwood would make with Don Siegel (they eventually made 5 movies together) so the whole thing sounded really neat. Natural Born Killers
Notes: I remember very well when this movie was released. At the time, there was quite some buzz about it. Indeed, back then, Quentin Tarantino was suddenly the hottest thing in Hollywood and it was his second feature length screenplay (his first one was ‘True Romance’). Indeed, following his new success with ‘Reservoir Dogs’, Tarantino was a hot property and everything he had done before was quickly released to profit from the hype as much as possible. Still, the script was rewritten so much that eventually the finished film bared little resemblance to Tarantino's original script. Anyway, how was the movie itself? Even though it was really controversial when it was released and even though it was obvious they tried to make a 90’s version of ‘Clockwork Orange’, I don’t think it was really that amazing. Don’t misunderstand me, I thought it was still a pretty good movie and I enjoyed the kinetic directing but, to be honest, even though Stone is pretty clever, he is not Kubrick and I thought that Mickey and Mallory were rather shallow and not really interesting.
