An average movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Basically, it is one of those timeless romantic classics which has gathered some die-hard fans around the world, even though it didn’t grow old very well. Indeed, it is incredibly cheesy an” read more

Notes: I remember it very well, when this movie was released, I read a very enthusiast review and it made it sound as if it was one of the best movies of the year so I was really eager to check it out. With this in mind, I had some huge expectations before watching it and, I must admit it, I thought it was a little bit disappointing. I mean, I did like it but it wasn’t as nearly as amazing as they said. The point is that the characters were really interesting, the directing by John Sayles was really solid, but somehow, I had a hard time to care about the story. I mean, sure, it was entertaining but like most thrillers, it was so far-fetched, I thought it was rather hard to take it seriously. Still, it remains an intriguing flick and I might need to re-watch it to make up my mind for good. An interesting aspect was to see a young Matthew McConaughey just at the beginning of his career before he got involved in all these underwhelming romantic-comedies.

“Since I kept hearing some good things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. On top of that, I always had a weak spot for the features delivered  by Aardman. Well, eventually, to be honest, even though it was a decent watch, I thought the whole thing was rather disappointing. Basicall” read more

“In 2016, Alex Proyas finally released a new directing effort after 7 long years and many cancelled projects but, unfortunately, 'Gods of Egypt' turned out to be the first big flop of the year so I decided to skip it for a while and watch instead this very obscure directing debut. A good movie

“When I heard that they would make a movie with both Batman and Superman, I thought it was a great idea and a very smart move from DC. Indeed, even though 'Man of Steel' turned out to be decent, it wasn't exactly the massive box-office success they had hoped for. However, with this combo, it was prac” read more

Notes: I’m pretty sure it was the first movie directed by von Trier which I have seen but, to be honest, I didn’t like it much. Indeed, when it was released, it was universally heralded so I had some pretty huge expectations but I thought it was rather disappointing. I mean, it is not that it was a bad movie, far from it. Indeed, I really enjoyed Lars von Trier’s directing and I could see why this movie was so loved. Furthermore, I have to admit, Emily Watson was absolutely brilliant in this. Indeed, her performance was really impressive, one of the best acting debut ever, and it is a real shame that she is so criminally underrated nowadays. Still, I didn’t really connect with this flick. Indeed, the tone was really really grim and gloomy (a trademark in Lars von Trier’s work) and I had a hard time to get into this story about this seemingly innocent woman being terribly mistreated by this *sshole. Above all, I really didn’t like by this ending with those bells in the sky… As a matter of fact, I even despised this ending, seriously. I don’t know, I’m not a religious man and I thought it was just an awful way to conclude all the unpleasant things that happen during this flick.

A good movie

“I remember very well when this movie was released. The Hunt (2012)
Original Title: 'Jagten' Country: Denmark Directed by: Thomas Vinterberg With: Mads Mikkelsen Plot: A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie. Note: Personally, I have always been intrigued about our current obsession about pedophilia and this movie gave me some really interesting insights about our current approach about such issues. Anyway, I thought it was a fascinating drama

A good movie

“Basically, it was one of these obscure French obscure movies that almost no one on this website have seen. Independence Day
Notes: I remember, when this movie was released, it was pretty huge but since it looked really stupid, I really didn’t care for it. Eventually, after a few weeks after it was released in France, I received the VHS in the mail, sent by my buddies from the US. It was one of those American VHS with a cardboard box, instead of the plastic ones you had in Europe, and there was even a pretty neat hologram of the White House being blown up (I still have this box as a matter of fact). However, since I didn’t care for this flick and since my VHS player couldn’t play American videos, I took me 2 or 3 years to watch it until the VHS player finally broke down and was replaced. To my surprise, I thought it was not bad at all. To be fair, I don’t think it is something that requires multiple watches but, for a blockbuster, it is actually pretty entertaining. The point is that, indeed, the whole thing is kind of stupid but the makers were fully aware of this and didn’t handle this too seriously. As a result, it was actually quite fun to behold and the special effects were pretty neat, even 20 years later. For Will Smith, it was a step towards mega stardom and the guy was immensely charismatic in this.
