An average movie

“For some reasons, I actually ended up watching this flick in the movie theater when it was released and I wonder what made me choose this movie at the time. I guess, back in those days, I was watching maybe 3 movies every week in the movie theater so I wasnā€™t exactly really picky. Anyway, to be ho” read more

Dear Diary (1993)
Notes: I remember it quite well when it was released. Indeed, it was a critical success when it was released at the Cannes Film Festival and I was really eager to check it out. In fact, somehow, the whole thing did remind me of Woody Allen in the sense that it was very talkative but also very smart, at least, thatā€™s my opinion. Basically, there was no plot whatsoever and, instead, the characters just kept talking, talking and talking again and it either bore you to death or it fascinates you. Well, I thought it was rather fascinating. Eventually, 8 years later, Moretti would come back to the Cannes Film Festival and would win this time the prestigious Golden Palm with ā€˜La stanza del figlioā€™ which was really good as well but I still preferred this movie though. Anyway, surprisingly, I have noticed that, after all these years, I havenā€™t seen many movies directed by this director which is too bad.

Wadjda
Original Title: 'Wadjda' Directed by: Haifaa Al-Mansour Plot: An enterprising Saudi girl signs on for her school's Koran recitation competition as a way to raise the remaining funds she needs in order to buy the green bicycle that has captured her interest. Note: Even though it was interesting, while watching the damned thing, I couldn't help thinking that, even though it was directed by a Saudi women, it still felt that it was giving a Western point of view on this strict Muslim culture. Basically, it gave a very bleak and sad view on the Saudi life, especially for the women and, even though it is probably true, it would have been nice to see something slightly more balanced. For example, towards the end, you get to see the main character reciting the Koran which seemed at first rather pointless and redundant but, eventually, it turned to be actually quite gorgeous and I think it would have worked better to show also such intriguing and positive aspects about this culture.

“I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. “Since I always had a weak spot for Hugh Grant, I was quite eager to check this movie. Basically, ever since the massive success of ā€˜Four Weddings and a Funeralā€™, Hugh Grant became a big star and the king of the romantic-comedy. The Lion King
Notes: Disney is right now going through another renaissance and the peak of this renaissance will probably be 'Frozen'. However, 20 years ago, they were also going through another glorious period like the current one and, at the time, this movie was their biggest one and, for many years, it had been the highest grossing animated feature ever made. Back then, I saw it in the theater but to be honest, I'm not exactly a huge fan and, from the same era, I think that 'Aladdin' (which was also a huge success when it was released but it has always been overshadowed by this classic) was actually much better. I mean, sure, it is definitely a solid feature, the animation was top-notch and, for once, Disney was creating something rather dark almost creating a Shakespearean tragedy ('Hamlet' was a big inspiration for this tale). Still, somehow, I had a hard time to connect with the whole thing. Maybe because I didn't really like the combination of musical songs side by side with some rather dramatic material (the songs were also not really amazing) or maybe it was because it was taking itself too seriously?

“The lack of of originality in the Ā American cinema nowadays is just really sad and, instead of coming up with something new, Ā they keep giving us some endless sequels and they are ready to remake pretty much anything at this point. A good movie

“I have noticed that several Filmclub members turned out to be slightly disappointing by this movie but, to be honest, I didn't have such expectations and I thought it turned out to be a decent watch. Spotlight
Notes: Eventually, I thought it was a pretty good story, with some solid directing and a very strong cast (Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, Stanley Tucci, Billy Crudup). The realistic approach worked fine as well and it was really neat that they didnā€™t add any sub-plots about the romantic or family lives of the involved reporters. And, yet, somehow, the whole thing didnā€™t really blow me away. I mean, I do have a weak spot for the genre and I really loved ā€˜All the President's Menā€™ which was obviously an inspiration for this movie but, in this case, even though it was an interesting story, it never really grabbed me. Thatā€™s the tricky thing with such thrillers, right from the beginning, you actually know how it will end so the makers have to manage to find some other way to entertain or grab the interest of the viewers. In this case, since they took such a realistic approach, nothing really surprising or spectacular happens ever during this movie. I still enjoyed the damned thing though.

The Last Seduction (1994)
Notes: When it was released it was a massive critical success and it became by far the most heralded movie directed by John Dhal who was at the time a modern master of film noir (see also ā€˜Kill me againā€™ and ā€˜Red Rock Westā€™) so I was really eager to check it out. Unfortunately, I thought it was actually a little bit underwhelming. I mean, sure, Linda Fiorrentino who gave here her breakthrough performance and basically carried the whole movie on her shoulders, was really good as the typical femme fatale and, as usual, the directing by John Dhal was really solid and he has created a very nice mood. Still, somehow, I had a hard time to care about the story but maybe I was just too young to really appreciate the whole thing so there is a possibility that a re-watch might change my opinion.
