“In a few months, at last, they will release a new reboot for this franchise and we’ll see if they manage to have a hit, especially after all the backlash they received after they went for an all-female cast. Of course, when I was a kid, I saw both movies (probably not in the movie theater for the ” read more

"Can someone explain to me how 'V for Vendetta' is actually a super-hero feature? Is it because V is wearing a mask? In my opinion, it doesn't fit the bill at all and doesn't belong to this list."

Secrets & Lies (1996)
Notes: It has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point. I remember it very well, when it was released, it was a critical success and even won the prestigious Golden Palm at the Cannes Film festival. With this in mind, I had some rather high expectations but, to be honest, even though I did like it, I can’t say I was really blown away by the whole thing. Maybe I might have been too young at the time (I must have been 16-17 years old when I watched it) and I probably missed the subtlety which has always been a trademark in Mike Leigh’s work. I mean, sure, the cast was fine and delivered some very good performances but, to be honest, I thought the whole thing was a little bit gimmicky. From the same director, I actually preferred the much darker ‘Naked’ or ‘All or Nothing’ which must be my favorite of his.

“Since Sofia  Coppola is usually an interesting director, I was quite eager to watch this movie and since it won the Golden Lion at Venice  Film Festival, I hoped it would be pretty good. Unfortunately, it turned out to only slightly better than 'The Bling Ring', the movie Coppola made afterwards. ” read more

A good movie

“We often talk about how some actors (like Ben Affleck or Matthew McConaughey) managed to make some impressive come-backs in their career but, very often, we tend to forget that for some directors, the path was also pretty hazardous and David O. Russell is one perfect example. Indeed, back then, foll” read more

An average movie

“I remember it very well, when this movie was released, even though it wasn’t really a box-office success, it still become a cult-classic so I was really eager to watch the damned thing. However, even though it was a decent watch and definitely one of the very few watchable movies starring Tim Alle” read more

The English Patient (1996)
Notes: To be honest, when I first heard of this movie, I thought it seemed to be a terribly cheesy romantic feature. On top of that, it seemed to be another shameless attempt from the Weinstein brothers to sweep the Oscars, an attempt which was this time successful since it managed to win 9 Oscars including the Best Picture. So, with this in mind, I was rather skeptical at first but I still wanted to check it out and, eventually, I have to admit it, I really loved the damned thing. Basically, it is one of the very best romantic features I have seen. Indeed, the directing was just really strong and it is one of the few movies I have seen in which in the back-and-forth in time actually worked and enhanced the whole story. Furthermore, all the actors involved were perfectly cast and gave some of the best performances in their respective careers.

Blue Is The Warmest Color
Notes: I was quite blown away by the whole thing and, in my opinion, it was one of the most beautiful and intense love stories I have ever seen. Rightfully, Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos were heralded for their performances and they were both just mesmerizing to behold. Seriously, I saw the movie yesterday and I still can’t stop thinking about their relationship which was so raw and realistic. This is basically the kind of relationship we all dream to have once in our lifetime. To be honest, I have to admit that no everything did work though. Of course, there is the matter of those very explicit sex scenes. Indeed, on one hand, it felt really voyeuristic and it seemed to be a very masculine point of view on lesbian love. You might wonder if those scenes really added something valuable to the story but, on the other hand, you might argue that they matched the intensity of their feelings for each other.
