A good movie

“Seriously, I’m still pissed off about this. Indeed, I was glad that I managed to find a UK double DVD with the director's cut for a decent prize but, for some reasons, they didn’t provide any subtitles and, as a result, I have to admit that I couldn’t completely follow the dialogues. Anyway, t” read more

An average movie

“Since my wife has always been a fan of John Travolta, we ended up watching this movie together. Personally, I always thought that Travolta was a decent actor but even after he made his come-back with ‘Pulp Fiction’, the guy always kept making some dubious career choices. Anyway, eventually, even” read more

A good movie

“I already saw this movie (in fact, I even saw it in the movie theater when it was released) but it was such a long time ago so I thought I might as well check it out again. Back then, John Travolta just made his come-back with ‘Pulp Fiction’ and this movie was one of the (very) few movies he mad” read more

The Ice Storm
Notes: This movie seems to be nowadays rather forgotten but I think it is quite a shame since it is actually one of the best movies directed by Ang Lee, arguably one of the best directors of the last 20 years. First of all, there was a stellar cast (Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, Katie Holmes) and they all delivered some really solid performances. Furthermore, it is very rare to see a movie like this one managing to develop grown-ups AND teenagers and, for once, you get to see the difficulties to connect with your teenage children when you are facing yourself some personal challenges. The first time I watched it, I was about 17 years old and, now, I’m 34, married with children, and the fact that I have been through both life stages made me able to appreciate even more this movie.

A good movie

“To be honest, the only movies I really loved from Lars von Trier were ‘Dogville’ and ‘Manderlay’ and I was really disappointed that he didn’t finish his trilogy with the planned ‘Wasington’ which was unfortunately cancelled. Instead, von Trier decided to make this movie which was somet” read more

Thrilla in Manila
Release date (U.S.) : ??? directed by : Ang Lee with : - plot : The Thrilla in Manila was the third and final boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. It was contested in 1975 for the heavyweight championship of the world at the Philippine Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City, Philippines, on Wednesday, October 1. Why do I want to see this ? Right now, there is not much information about this movie but anything directed by Ang Lee is a must see in my book.

A very good movie

“To be honest, since I didn’t hear much from the guy anymore, I thought that John Boorman did retire but, apparently, he did release another directing effort a couple of years ago. It was called ‘Queen & Country’ and it was rather obscure like most of his recent work. Anyway, I always had a” read more

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Basically, back in the 90’s, I used to be a massive fan of Takeshi Kitano’s work (he was probably one of the best directors at work at the time) and I managed to watch most of his movies. This feature was probably his most acclaimed directing effort (it even won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival) so I had some rather high expectations before watching the damned thing. Well, eventually, honestly, even though I really liked it, I can’t say it really blew me away but maybe it was because my expectations were too high. It was still a solid movie, a typical Kitano feature seemingly mixing poetry and violence and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
