An average movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have this flick and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Still, I remember it pretty well, before it was released, there was a pretty good buzz about this flick. Indeed, after spending most of the 80’s and 90’s in some (usually really average) actio” read more

“I wonder if I saw this movie before or after the original version directed by Wim Wenders. I’m pretty sure that I saw this remake first though. Anyway, when it was released, it turned out to be a box-office success and the song ‘Iris’ by Goo Goo Dolls (by the way, it is probably one of the wor” read more

Dangerous Liaisons
What is is about? It is the story of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two rivals (and ex-lovers) who use seduction as a weapon to humiliate and degrade others, all the while enjoying their cruel games and boasting about their manipulative talents. Personal note: To be honest, it took me a while to get into it but it was really worthwhile and the whole thing turned out to be quite spellbinding to read. I especially loved those seriously despicable characters. Quote: "When one woman strikes at the heart of another, she seldom misses, and the wound is invariably fatal."

A great classic

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie, like all the major masterpieces directed by Charles Chaplin, I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Anyway, I have noticed that, according to IMDb, this movie is supposed to be the best one delivered by this great master but I p” read more

An average movie

“From all the James Bond movies starring Sean Connery, this was probably the weakest one. Basically, even though ‘On Her Majesty's Secret Service’ was a decent installment, George Lazenby declined to return to play this iconic part and, even though they considered some other actors, they went bac” read more

A classic

“Since this movie won the Academy Award for the Best Picture, I was really eager to check it out but, for some reasons, it took me about 10 years to finally see the damned thing. Well, I can tell you, it was definitely worth the wait and this movie completely deserved its stellar reputation. Indeed, ” read more

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some really good things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out.  Eventually, I have to agree, it was a solid and entertaining action flick, no doubt about it, but I still think it was rather overrated. The funny thing is that, somehow, I ended up watching it with m” read more

A very good movie

“Ever since I saw ‘What's Eating Gilbert Grape’, I have been a big fan of Lasse Hallstrom and, for the last 20 years, I have been closely following his work. However, I have to admit that most of his movies never really reached the same level of ‘What's Eating…’. Still, if there was ever on” read more

Akira
Notes: The first time I saw it, I was about 15 years old and it completely blew me my mind. Indeed, I had never seen anything like this before and I thought it was just fascinating (Eventually, I also bought the comic-books which I also highly recommend). Indeed, this animated movie was just so well done and it was definitely a milestone when it was made. The whole thing looked great (and still does 20 years later) but, above all, the story was just mesmerizing. I always had a weak spot for those post-apocalyptic features and, in my opinion, even though it is now more than 20 years old, it still feels really modern and edgy. Like 'Blade Runner', this flick could be released nowadays and nobody would realize it has actually been made decades ago. Yeah, it is that good.

A good movie

“Roger Ebert was (and still is) my favorite movie critic. Still, even though I agreed 95% of the time with him, there were some rare occasions when he came up with some surprising views on some movies and this one is a perfect example. A Fish Called Wanda
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Still, I remember it very well, when I was growing up in France in the 90’s, this movie was a major cult-classic and, with this in mind, I had some high expectations before watching the damned thing. Well, to be honest, even though it was pretty neat, I can’t say I was really blown away by this movie. I mean, sure, it was fairly entertaining but I never thought it was really hilarious. Basically, you have some daft characters doing all kind of silly things and while the fans will argue that the humor was pure genius, I’m afraid it is actually an acquired taste. Still, it is a pretty much a classic British comedy, no doubt about it.

“At some point, I noticed that my step-daughter had bought the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' book. It was probably because of the hype and I’m pretty sure she never read the whole thing.
