Clueless
Notes: Back in those days, Alicia Silverstone was not really well known, she was basically ‘that chick’ who showed up in a few Aerosmith video clips. Thanks to this flick which was a surprising success, she became a star overnight and even signed a 3-movie deal worth $10,000,000 with Sony which was a huge gamble. Eventually, she made some huge flops, ‘Batman & Robin’ among them, and since then she is pretty much forgotten nowadays. Anyway, how was her breakthrough feature? Indeed, it was not bad, a rather decent high-school comedy but, in my opinion, it was a only slightly better than the average movie in this genre but not much more I'm afraid. I mean, it was entertaining enough but it was still too stereotypical and they didn’t add enough interesting elements to the formula to make it truly stand out from the rest. Furthermore, even though Alicia Silverstone who was just 19 years old at the time, did a decent job, her character was actually more obnoxious than really funny or interesting.

An average movie

“Back in the 90's, when I was pretty much starting to discover the greatest treasures  in the motion picture history, Ken Loach was definitely one of my favorite directors but, even though by now I have been following him for about 20 years, I have to admit that it has been a while since he really i” read more

An average movie

“I wonder if this movie was the fist one I saw directed by Pedro Almodovar. At least, it was definitely the first I saw in the movie theater and I even saw it when it was released. To be honest, I was rather disappointed by the whole thing. I mean, back then, I wasn’t really familiar with this dire” read more

A good movie

“When was the last time that Spike Lee actually had real critical hit? It must have been 10 years ago with ‘Inside Man’ and since then, he has been working mostly on some really obscure features that really didn’t get much love. It’s really too bad because I always had a weak spot for this di” read more

A good movie

“The last time I saw my sister, she bought me a DVD-box with the complete work of Xavier Dolan so that's how I ended up watching his movies. With this 2nd directing effort, there was an interesting evolution from 'J'ai tué ma mère', Nolan's directing debut, and it was definitely something more ambi” read more

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, even though I did like it, I still had a hard time to connect with the damned thing. I mean, I really enjoyed the black-and-white cinematography, it was really neat and appropriate and, once” read more

“My kids really wanted to see this movie (especially my step-son, as the first installment  was the 2nd movie we went to see together when he was just about 10 years old) and since I kept hearing some pretty good things about the damned thing, I was also quite eager to check it out. A good movie

“I already saw this movie, in fact, if I’m not mistaken, I think I even saw it in the movie theater when it was released, but since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, even though I always had some mixed feelings towards the damned thing, I have to admit that it” read more

Heat
Notes: I remember very well when this movie came out. Indeed, back then, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino were still a big deal and when the word came out that they would finally star together in a movie, like any other average movie fanatic, I was just thrilled. Eventually, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released and I was certainly not disappointed. Of course, eventually, we were all slightly cheated since they only had two scenes together, for a total of less than 10 minutes, but it was still a very well made and really entertaining heist feature. The masterstroke with this movie is that, instead of rushing everything and focusing on the action scenes, they took their time. As a result, De Niro and Pacino had enough space to develop their characters and you had the opportunity to root for both guys, the thief and the cop, which is something very rare and it was very well handled here.
