A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for François Truffaut’s work, I was really eager to check it out. Basically, following the massive critical success of ‘Le dernier mĂ©tro’, Truffaut came back just a year later with this feature which was” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Anyway, I always had some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, on one hand, it is one of the very few movies starring Tom Cruise which was slightly more risky than his usual feature” read more

“I wasn’t really expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I didn’t care much for the damned thing. Seriously, even though I don’t mind a decent romantic-comedy from time to time, t” read more

The White Balloon (1995)
Notes: It turned out to be an extremely minimalistic feature, it’s basically about a young child who wants to buy a goldfish and loses her money and, well, it was pretty much it. It was apparently done on purpose as Jafar Panahi wanted to display that you didn’t necessarily need millions of dollars to shoot a movie. Anyway, I always had a weak spot for such minimalistic features and this one was definitely pretty neat. Indeed, the end-result felt like a mix of Italian neorealism (I’m pretty sure that ‘Ladri di biciclette’ was a huge influence on this movie) with a nail-biting thriller and this mix worked really well. To be honest, it did feel strange, even quite terrifying, to see such a young kid wandering around in the street on her own, that’s something you simply don’t do in Western countries nowadays (Maybe did we use to do it as well back then 40-50 years ago though?). However, there was one thing that bothered with this movie and it was the fact that this little girl was just so damned annoying. Sure, I know her portrayal was actually accurate, my ex-girlfriend had a young daughter around the same age and she displayed a very similar behavior. Still, it didn’t change the fact that her behavior was borderline cringe-inducing, especially when she was endlessly nagging her mother to give her some money to buy some goldfish, which was even more annoying when you think that they already had some perfectly fine goldfishes at home.

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this movie (it was even nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award in 2014), I thought I should check it out. Eventually, I thought it was a decent drama but I can’t say it really blew me away. I don’t know, maybe I have seen already too many ” read more

A classic

“Apparently, this movie was the last one Charles Chaplin made during the silent era and it is yet another flick I have seen many times when I was a kid. Indeed, I remember it very well. At some point, the greatest classics directed by Charles Chaplin were broadcast on one of the French channels and m” read more

True Detective
Notes: Even though it took me some time to convince my wife to watch the damned thing, eventually, she was really hooked and really loved it. To be honest, we both felt that the ending didn't really deliver but, still, the whole thing was quite awesome and completely deserved all the praised it got. I was especially impressed by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as they both gave some of the best performances.

An average movie

“By now, I have seen all the movies directed by Clint Eastwood and, out of all the movies he has directed during his prestigious career, it is easily the one I appreciated the least (yes, even the underwhelming ‘Blood Work’ was still better than this). It wouldn’t go as far as saying that it wa” read more

Notes: In the 90's, Emir Kusturica was one of the most important directors in the world and I was a big fan of his work. Unfortunately, we haven't heard much from him during the 00's and that's too bad. Anyway, back in the 90’s, after making his only US production so far starring no one less than Johnny Depp (it’s called ‘Arizona Dream’ and it is quite marvelous), Kusturica went back to (ex-)Yugoslavia to make what many consider his magnum opus and, for the second time around, the Serbian director won the prestigious Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Eventually, even though I did like it at the time (I saw it in the movie theater when it was released), I wasn’t exactly blown away. I guess I was just too young at the time (I think I must have been 15-16 years old when I first saw it) and since it is a rather complex feature with many layers, quite frankly, it went a little bit over my head. Still, it is quite an impressive piece of work, a big epic about Yugoslavian history.

The Killing
What is it about? A police investigation, the saga of a grieving family, and a Seattle mayoral campaign all interlock after the body of 17-year-old Rosie Larsen is found in the trunk of a submerged car. My verdict: What I really loved about this show were those 2 great characters Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder, both very well played by Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman. To be honest, the cases they worked on were decent but not really amazing though. Above all, I think it was a poor decision to have their 1st case stretched over 2 seasons and it worked better on the 3rd and 4th season with each with their own case. Still, it is a pretty cool TV-show nonetheless. Will I watch the following seasons? Yes, I have watched the whole thing by now.
