A very good movie

“Basically, it is another really obscure French movies that almost no one has seen on Listal. I don’t know if anyone made this comparison before but this movie actually reminded me of ‘Teorema’, one of the most fascinating movies I have ever seen. Indeed, both movies deal with an average middle” read more

Trainspotting
Notes: Either you like this movie or not, the fact remains that it is easily the most influential British movie released in the 90's. Even though I prefer 'Shallow grave', I must admit that I was really impressed by the second movie directed by Danny Boyle. Indeed, there was some great directing, some great acting and it was plain and simply a very entertaining movie. Still, even though I think it is really good, I'm not sure if it is really that great though. This is a really personal point of view that you may not share at all but, personally, I think it has an ambivalent attitude towards drugs. Of course, there are some horrible parts but, in some over scenes, they rather seem to have a grand time. Eventually, I think it is a very well made and fun movie with some great characters but, at the end of the day, the whole thing is actually pretty shallow. Indeed, the 1st half is really hilarious, some of the funniest sh*t I have ever seen, which is quite striking when you consider the subject. The 2nd half, on the other hand, was definitely weaker and felt more unfocused.

An average movie

“From the 3 big horror movies that launched some major franchises in the 80’s (‘Halloween’, ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’, ‘Friday the 13th’), my favorite one was ‘Friday the 13th’. Maybe it was because I saw it first but I thought that this first installment was just quite spellbindi” read more

Notes: It is above all thanks to this flick that the Coen brothers became pretty huge. I mean, before that they had a solid cult following but it is only after this feature came out that their popularity grew up exponentially. It became their first classic movie and many think it should have won the best picture award back then (It lost eventually against 'The English Patient'). Personally, I have a strange relationship with this movie (actually, I have this feeling with almost all the movies made by the Coen brothers...). The first time I watched it, I thought it was great, the second time, it was just Ok, the third time, it was great again, the fourth time, just ok again.... It's rather weird, isn't it ? I guess, it all depends on my mood. Still, there was a great cast (William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare, Frances McDormand), they all delivered some terrific performances and, if you are in the right mood, the whole thing is just funny as hell.

A good movie

“Not so long ago, I saw Wong Kar-wai’s last directing effort, ‘Yi dai zong shi’, but even though it was rather promising, I thought it was ultimately rather disappointing. Still, the guy remains a very interesting director so I decided to check one of his older movies as well. Apparently, even ” read more

A good movie

“I remember very well when this movie was released. Indeed, I’m pretty sure I actually saw it in the movie theater but, otherwise, I saw it very soon after. Anyway, while watching the damned thing, I was pretty sure I was witnessing the birth of a new Star. Indeed, Reese Witherspoon, who was just a” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick. Personally, I always had a weak spot for romantic-comedies, but eventually, I ended up with some mixed feelings about this movie. The main issue I had with this movie is that,  in my opinion, the whole thing in fact almost unwatchable ” read more

“I was looking for something to watch with my wife but she didn’t care for anything I suggested but since she enjoyed ‘Magic in the Moonlight’, I thought we might as well try another Woody Allen feature. “All my life, I have been fascinated with movies. Obviously, it took me some time to finally get some understanding about the subject and, when I was a kid, like anyone else, I made some rather dubious choices. For example, when this movie was released, I must have been around 12 years old and I thou” read more

Notes: Raoul Ruiz is not really well known here in listal but he is actually a quite interesting director. He actually died in 2011 but he had a productive career, directing more than 100 movies. Even though he was Chilean, most of those movies were made in France as he fled his home-country from Pinochet's dictatorship. Anyway, I heard a lot about the guy so I was really intrigued by his work and when I finally got the opportunity to get acquainted, I was rather thrilled. Even though I don't think this movie was really amazing, I still think it was pretty good. Indeed, first of all, you have a very good cast (Marcello Mastroianni, Melvil Poupaud, Chiara Mastroianni, Arielle Dombasle, Smaïn) and I especially enjoyed the late Marcello Mastroianni who was definitely one of the best actors ever. I also enjoyed the story which was pretty surrealistic, a trademark in Ruiz work. Still, even though the story was all right, I missed a lot of the symbolism (I'm not smart enough, I guess...) and I thought the pacing was rather sluggish but it is inherent to the genre, I'm afraid.
