An average movie

“Once one of the most promising directors from France, Mathieu Kassovitz eventually turned out to have a rather disappointing career after all. Indeed, his 2nd directing effort, ‘La haine’, turned out to be one of the most acclaimed movies released in the 90’s and many people expected great thi” read more

A good movie

“I already saw this movie, if I recall it correctly, I even saw the damned thing when it was released in the movie theater. Anyway, since it was a while back and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out again. In fact, I remember quite well when this movie was releas” read more

Notes: With this movie, Alejandro Amenabar became a household name and went to direct ‘The Others’ in Hollywood. After ‘Mar Adentro’, it became rather quiet with the Spanish director but he made a come-back with something new in 2015 after a 6 years hiatus. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I find it rather difficult to choose between this one and the remake which one is the best. Still, I think I still prefer the original version because it focuses more on the story, there was no Hollywood influence here and, of course, the whole thing came from this flick. Still, even though it was an intriguing story, somehow, it didn’t really blow me away. I don’t know, on one hand, the surrealist atmosphere was one of the main assets of this movie, making it sometimes quite mesmerizing but, on the other hand, because of all the weird stuff going on, it was difficult to connect with the characters or to care with that they were going through. Still, it remains a pretty good mind-f*ck.

The Knick
What is it about? A look at the professional and personal lives of the staff at New York's Knickerbocker Hospital during the early part of the twentieth century. My verdict: Well, it did sound promising but, in fact, it turned to be much better than I expected. Indeed, the whole thing looked great, it was fascinating to behold and Clive Owen gave here easily one of his best performances. Concerning Steven Soderbergh, it was the best thing he has delivered since 'Traffic' and, apparently, it was totally worth it that he went into (temporary) retirement to direct this great TV-show. Will I watch the following seasons? Since there were only 2 seasons and 20 episodes, we have already watched the whole thing and totally loved it.

A good movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point.  Eventually, even though it was definitely a powerful tale based on a really important piece of history, somehow, I didn’t really connect with the whole thing. I don’t know, somehow” read more

The Sweet Hereafter (1997)
Notes: To be honest, it wasn't an easy movie to decipher. Indeed, you had first some random chronology which is usually a useless gimmick but it did work very well here. Then, the motivations of Steven Mitchell were also rather obscure. Indeed, it seemed rather unlikely that he did it for the money but, then, why did he try to convince this community to get a trial? Anyway, eventually, it wasn't not a movie about greed, it was a movie about grief and the different ways you can deal with this emotion. Indeed, the people of this small community needed some closure, even deserved it but it was denied to them and you can't blame them for trying to find it by going through this judicial process. Unfortunately, they will probably never reach any kind of closure, their lives, for most of them, will be shattered for good and no lawsuit, no money settlement, would really alleviate their sorrow. It was all intertwined with the story of his lawyer who was also grieving in his own way, even if his daughter was not actually dead. Indeed, after death, drug addiction must be the most dreadful nightmare for any parent. However, even though most movies will sell you the idea that drug addicts can recover, it is not always the case. For Steven Mitchell, even if he still loved his daughter after all what happened, she basically completely disappeared and the only thing left was her addiction which must have been really heartbreaking for the poor guy. That they managed to show all this in just a few phone calls was just really impressive and Ian Holm definitely delivered here one of the best performances of his career.

Notes: I remember when it came out, it was a real rage. Everybody went to see this and there were those weird stories about some people who were going there 20 times... So, everybody went to see it ... except me. Indeed, I thought the whole thing was so overhyped, there was no way I was going to follow this crowd of sheep. Eventually, I watched it about two years later on my own terms and I didn't really like it. I think by now I have seen it about 3 times but, even though, I don't really like it, I don't hate it and I definitely can see why so many people love it. I mean, it is a crowd pleaser with broad characters, huge spectacle and not too much thinking, nothing wrong with that. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet both gave some solid performances even if they did much better later on in their respective careers. The directing was definitely solid with some impressive special effects and the last 60 minutes were quite amazing to behold. The main issue I had was with the whole love story. I mean, there was definitely some chemistry between DiCaprio and Winslet but the whole thing felt terribly generic and pedestrian to me. Above all, I thought it was rather shocking to substitute one of the greatest disasters in history by some trivial love story.
