True Detective
Notes: Even though it took me some time to convince my wife to watch the damned thing, eventually, she was really hooked and really loved it. To be honest, we both felt that the ending didn't really deliver but, still, the whole thing was quite awesome and completely deserved all the praised it got. I was especially impressed by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as they both gave some of the best performances.

An average movie

“By now, I have seen all the movies directed by Clint Eastwood and, out of all the movies he has directed during his prestigious career, it is easily the one I appreciated the least (yes, even the underwhelming ‘Blood Work’ was still better than this). It wouldn’t go as far as saying that it wa” read more

Notes: In the 90's, Emir Kusturica was one of the most important directors in the world and I was a big fan of his work. Unfortunately, we haven't heard much from him during the 00's and that's too bad. Anyway, back in the 90’s, after making his only US production so far starring no one less than Johnny Depp (it’s called ‘Arizona Dream’ and it is quite marvelous), Kusturica went back to (ex-)Yugoslavia to make what many consider his magnum opus and, for the second time around, the Serbian director won the prestigious Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Eventually, even though I did like it at the time (I saw it in the movie theater when it was released), I wasn’t exactly blown away. I guess I was just too young at the time (I think I must have been 15-16 years old when I first saw it) and since it is a rather complex feature with many layers, quite frankly, it went a little bit over my head. Still, it is quite an impressive piece of work, a big epic about Yugoslavian history.

The Killing
What is it about? A police investigation, the saga of a grieving family, and a Seattle mayoral campaign all interlock after the body of 17-year-old Rosie Larsen is found in the trunk of a submerged car. My verdict: What I really loved about this show were those 2 great characters Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder, both very well played by Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman. To be honest, the cases they worked on were decent but not really amazing though. Above all, I think it was a poor decision to have their 1st case stretched over 2 seasons and it worked better on the 3rd and 4th season with each with their own case. Still, it is a pretty cool TV-show nonetheless. Will I watch the following seasons? Yes, I have watched the whole thing by now.

“To be honest, it has been a while since I saw this flick. In fact, if I recall it correctly, I actually even saw it in the movie theater when it was released. Even though it might seem weird that a 12 year old boy would watch something like this, somehow, it still made sense, at least, to me. Indeed” read more

A good movie

“I already saw this movie but since it was ages ago, I thought I might as well check it out again. First of all, even though I consider Terry Gilliam one of the most interesting directors in the world, I have noticed that I have actually sometimes a hard time to really connect with his movies becaus” read more

Notes: What ever happened to Anh Hung Tran?!? Back in the 1993, he burst into the film world with ‘The Scent of Green Papaya’ which was a massive critical success, at least in France, following its release at the Cannes Film Festival. Unfortunately, during the last 15 years, he has made only 2 movies, the Japanase ‘Noruwei no mori’ which got some rather weak ratings and the really obscure ‘I Come with the Rain’ starring Josh Hartnett. Anyway, following his promising debut, he came up with this flick, also taking place in Vietnam but, this time, the scale was much bigger and the whole project was really ambitious. Eventually, I really liked it and it was once again a critical success (at the time, it managed to win the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival) but, to be honest, I thought it was not as successful as his previous flick. Indeed, ‘The Scent of Green Papaya’ displayed an unique and mesmerizing vibe, while this movie was solid crime drama but it was not really a game changer in any way.

Clueless
Notes: Back in those days, Alicia Silverstone was not really well known, she was basically ‘that chick’ who showed up in a few Aerosmith video clips. Thanks to this flick which was a surprising success, she became a star overnight and even signed a 3-movie deal worth $10,000,000 with Sony which was a huge gamble. Eventually, she made some huge flops, ‘Batman & Robin’ among them, and since then she is pretty much forgotten nowadays. Anyway, how was her breakthrough feature? Indeed, it was not bad, a rather decent high-school comedy but, in my opinion, it was a only slightly better than the average movie in this genre but not much more I'm afraid. I mean, it was entertaining enough but it was still too stereotypical and they didn’t add enough interesting elements to the formula to make it truly stand out from the rest. Furthermore, even though Alicia Silverstone who was just 19 years old at the time, did a decent job, her character was actually more obnoxious than really funny or interesting.
