An average movie

“The lack of of originality in the  American cinema nowadays is just really sad and, instead of coming up with something new,  they keep giving us some endless sequels and they are ready to remake pretty much anything at this point. From all these remakes, this must be the weirdest one and definite” read more

A good movie

“I had seriously no idea what to expect from this movie and the main reason why I wanted to watch it was because it was included in the '1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die' list. Eventually, it was a really interesting feature. Indeed, it is always pretty neat to discover a new land and a new cu” read more

A good movie

“In fact, I saw this movie in the movie theater when it was released. To be honest, I wonder how I actually ended up watching the damned thing but I guess it was because there were several directors I admired that were involved (Alejandro G. Iñårritu, Ken Loach, Mira Nair, Sean Penn). On top of tha” read more

Spotlight
Notes: Eventually, I thought it was a pretty good story, with some solid directing and a very strong cast (Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, Stanley Tucci, Billy Crudup). The realistic approach worked fine as well and it was really neat that they didn’t add any sub-plots about the romantic or family lives of the involved reporters. And, yet, somehow, the whole thing didn’t really blow me away. I mean, I do have a weak spot for the genre and I really loved ‘All the President's Men’ which was obviously an inspiration for this movie but, in this case, even though it was an interesting story, it never really grabbed me. That’s the tricky thing with such thrillers, right from the beginning, you actually know how it will end so the makers have to manage to find some other way to entertain or grab the interest of the viewers. In this case, since they took such a realistic approach, nothing really surprising or spectacular happens ever during this movie. I still enjoyed the damned thing though.

“Even though this movie was a commercial and critical flop, since I really loved ‘Ted’,  I still wanted to check it out. Unfortunately, I’m afraid the whole thing really deserved its poor reputation as it turned out to be rather underwhelming. On paper, it did sound promising to have Seth MacF” read more

The Last Seduction (1994)
Notes: When it was released it was a massive critical success and it became by far the most heralded movie directed by John Dhal who was at the time a modern master of film noir (see also ‘Kill me again’ and ‘Red Rock West’) so I was really eager to check it out. Unfortunately, I thought it was actually a little bit underwhelming. I mean, sure, Linda Fiorrentino who gave here her breakthrough performance and basically carried the whole movie on her shoulders, was really good as the typical femme fatale and, as usual, the directing by John Dhal was really solid and he has created a very nice mood. Still, somehow, I had a hard time to care about the story but maybe I was just too young to really appreciate the whole thing so there is a possibility that a re-watch might change my opinion.

A good movie

Wild Reeds
Notes: Even though this movie is nowadays pretty much forgotten, I remembered very well when it was released in France. Indeed, in my my home country, it was a massive critical success (it even won the CĂ©sar of the Best French Film of the year) and there was a huge hype around the whole thing. For AndrĂ© TĂ©chinĂ©, it was again another critical hit following the already heralded ‘Ma saison prĂ©fĂ©rĂ©e’ and ‘J'embrasse pas’ but, above all, it was the introduction of a new generation of talented French actors (Élodie Bouchez, GaĂ«l Morel, StĂ©phane Rideau). To be honest, I didn’t see it right away at the time because it sounded too good to be true and I’m always annoyed when everybody seem to think that one single movie is supposedly that great. Eventually, I got really curious, I had to watch the damned thing and, eventually, I have to admit that it did deserve its stellar reputation. Indeed, TĂ©chinĂ© managed to create a very nice mood and those characters were really 3 dimensional and felt quite genuine.

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Chocolat
chosen by Eric Notes: Omar Sy, probably one of the most famous French actors at work nowadays, was just really charismatic and very often really funny in this movie. Indeed, he was just perfect to play this part and, without him, I'm not sure it would have actually worked. Basically, even though it was an intriguing story with some great potential, it turned out to be a decent biopic but nothing really mind-blowing, I'm afraid. The first problem is that the whole thing was just so pedestrian and predictable. Then, the other problem is that they kept adding some elements to the story without properly developing them. It was above all obvious with his partner Footit. Indeed, during the whole thing, they never really make up their mind if the guy was actually his friend or if he was just exploiting him. At some point, already half way through, Chocolat himself even asks him what the hell does he do with his money and his free time. Eventually, we get to see a random scene in a gay bar which had nothing to do with what happened before or after. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, thanks to Omar Sy, I still think it was a decent watch after all. (May 2016)
