Notes: Personally, I have never been a huge fan of ‘The Silence of The Lambs’. Sure, I did like it, it is definitely an entertaining flick but, in my opinion, it is a seriously over the top thriller with some preposterous scenes. The sad thing is that even though this movie has become a huge classic, many people tend to forget that it wasn’t actually the first film starring Hannibal Lecter. Indeed, 5 years before, Michael Mann directed this flick which was an adaptation of ‘Red Dragon’ which would be remade more than 15 years later by Brett Ratner. All right, I have to admit it, it wasn’t better than ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ which still remains by far the best movie involving Lecter but it was still pretty good though and it sure deserves to get more attention. The most interesting thing about this flick is how vastly different the mood and the tone was. I also enjoyed Brian Cox’s performance as it was something really different than Anthony Hopkins'. Indeed, his Lector was much more down to earth which was very welcome.

Notes: First of all, I have to admit that I have a somewhat difficult relationship with David Lynch. I mean, by now, I have seen all his movies and even though I admire his work and considered him a genuine artist, I usually have a hard time to enjoy most of his features and this movie was a perfect example. Indeed, as usual with Lynch, the beginning was a spellbinding and thrilling film noir which would have made Hitchcock proud. But then, again as usual with this director, he obviously didn't care about the plot, he seamelessly threw it out the window and what remained was a succession of weird and unsettling scenes. In my opinion, it is a pattern used too often by David Lynch and I always find it eventually more frustrating than rewarding. Still, the directing was really neat and there was a fine cast involved, above all Dennis Hopper was really impressive and probably gave here his best performance ever. Eventually, even though it is an acquired taste, there are still plenty things to love here.

Notes: For some reasons, even though I have been following Woody Allen’s work for several decades now, I have never been a huge fan of this movie. I mean, the first time I saw it, I was much younger and maybe I wasn’t able to really appreciate it but, eventually, after all these years, I have to admit that there is no doubt that it was actually better than anything Allen has done during the last 20 years. Anyway, when it was released, it was definitely a big success and, with a box office gross of over $40 million, it was Woody Allen's most financially successful film until ‘Match Point’ was released almost 20 years later. I don’t know, in my case, even though there was a stellar cast involved (Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey, Carrie Fisher, Michael Caine, Dianne Wiest, Max von Sydow, Woody Allen) and the story itself was fairly entertaining, it never really reached the level of such Allen’s classics like ‘Manhattan’ or ‘Annie Hall’.
