A bad movie

“To be honest, it has been years since I have seen this flick but it was really weak, I don’t think I will waste my time again with it. Of course, you might argue that, with such a title, there was no way that this movie could have been worth anything but I really disagree. In fact, I actually love” read more

An average movie

“Nowadays, I have access to such services like HBO, Netflix and even (the illegal) Porcorn but, before that, I was dependent on what would be broadcast on the various TV channels we have.  As a result, I have ended up watching some rather obscure movies for some rather dubious reasons and this movie” read more

A classic

“By now, I have seen all the James Bond instalments, sometimes, even several times, but to be honest, most of them are actually rather forgettable and I would have a rather hard time to really recall most of them in details. However, there are a few exceptions and this first instalment is definitely ” read more

Unforgiven
Notes: Even though some actors-turned-directors like Robert Redford, Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson or even Ben Affleck got some immediate critical recognition, it surprisingly took Clint Eastwood 20 years to get there, to finally be acknowledged as a major film maker. What happened then? This movie happened and completely changed the outlook on this icon whose work as a director wasn't really taken seriously until that point. I mean, Eastwood had already made 3 Westerns so far ('High Plains Drifter', 'The Outlaw Josey Wales', 'Pale Rider') and even though they were all pretty good, this flick was easily the best Western directed by Eastwood. What was so great about this flick was not really the directing (which was really good), the acting (which was really good as well) or the story (which was really entertaining), in my opinion, it was the tone. Indeed, I loved how rather grim and gloomy the whole thing was and the way Eastwood blurred the frontier between good or bad was just brilliant. Great directing, great acting, great story. What else should I add ?

An average movie

“Since I have always been a fan of Milos Forman's work, I was really eager to check this movie and I think it took me about 10 years to finally see the damned thing. Well, I wish I could say it was worth waiting for so long but I 'm afraid the whole thing turned out to be rather disappointing. First ” read more

A good movie

“This movie is pretty much the stuff of legends. Indeed, even though it is probably the least regarded movie directed by David Lynch (himself always considered it a massive failure), it has now reached more or less a cult status. Anyway, it must sound surprising but I thought it was actually not bad ” read more

An average movie

“When I heard that Bernardo Bertolucci was coming up with a new directing effort, I got pretty excited. I mean, sure, it had been already a couple of decades since he had released a great movie but the guy had such an impressive legacy so I was really eager to see this movie and I even went to see t” read more

Man Bites Dog
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point. Anyway, I remember it very well when it was released In France. Indeed, at the time, there was a lot of buzz around this movie and it quickly became a huge cult classic. With this in mind, I had some rather high expectations before watching the damned thing but, to be honest, I thought it was really disappointing. I mean, the whole thing really had some potential, it started pretty well, it was a little bit like ‘Spinal Tap’ but instead of hard rockers, you had a serial killer and it had some pitch black humor. But after a while, the jokes got worse and worse with 2 top moments, one when the main character goes to a restaurant to eat some mussels and eventually throws everything up (this scenes last like 20 minutes...) and one of the final scenes when the guy rapes a woman... Eventually, I think it is in fact one of the most overrated movies ever.

A good movie

“In my opinion, Baltasar Kormákur has a rather mixed track-record as a director but this movie sounded really intriguing and, on top of that, they managed to get a impressive cast for this movie. Anyway, it was a really ambitious project and it thought that most of it worked pretty well. Indeed, I h” read more

A good movie

“The first installment was supposed to be and should have been really lame but,  surprisingly, it turned out to be really fun  and enjoyable. With this sequel, it was pretty much the same,  there was no way that it could work as well and, yet, they did it again. Indeed, even though it was probably” read more

“I have to admit it it, the main reason why I wanted to watch this movie was because Johnny Depp was in it. The Crying Game
Notes: It has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should really re-watch it at some point. On the other hand, I’m not sure if the whole thing would have the same impact if I knew what was going to happen. It’s rather funny because I actually never really liked the usual twists in most of the thrillers but this one was, for me, completely unexpected. Basically, it is a really weird movie which cannot be classified and it is is Neil Jordan's best movie so far. The story was just really fascinating and so unexpected. The less you know about it, the more you will enjoy it. To conclude, I think it is one of the most fascinating thrillers ever made and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Steve Jobs
Notes: When this movie was released, even though it was critically heralded, it turned out to be a box-office flop. Apparently, the audience didn’t care for another Steve Jobs biopic only a couple of years after another one, even if it was apparently much superior than its predecessor. Even so, since it sounded really intriguing and since I have always been a big fan of Danny Boyle's work, I was still really eager to check it out. Well, eventually, I was really impressed. Indeed, I really loved this original approach and I thought it turned out to be a much more effective way to learn about a famous figure that the usual bullet points that you get with this genre. As a result, you really get the opportunity to dive into the psychological complexity of this character, thanks also to another really strong performance by Michael Fassbender who remains one of the best actors of his generation.
