An average movie

“For some reasons, it was a movie I wanted to watch for quite some time. To be honest, at first, Ā I thought it was actually quite terrible. Indeed, basically, it was obvious that they went for some modern version of 'Cyrano de Bergerac' switching the sex of the characters. Well, I already didn't lik” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, I really had no idea what this movie was about but since it seemed to be a decent horror flick, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, the beginning was quite promising. Indeed, Ethan Hawke is a solid actor and I loved the idea of this washed-up writer going to a new” read more

A good movie

Sully
Cast : Tom Hanks, Laura Linney, Aaron Eckhart What was it about? The story of American pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, who heroically landed a troubled aircraft full of passengers on the Hudson River My two cents: Since Eastwood had a big box-office success with ā€˜American Sniper’, he decided to once again tell the story of another American hero. Well, even though ā€˜American Sniper’ was quite popular, to be honest, I actually didn’t care much for this movie and I thought that this story was actually much more interesting. Still, I didn’t really like the approach they chose to tell this true story. Basically, the tricky thing was that the crash and the rescue altogether didn’t even take an hour so they had to add some stuff to reach a decent running time (eventually, it was still only 96 mins and the shortest film directed by Eastwood). Eventually, they tried to focus on the fact that Sully was, at first, blamed by the NTSB of reckless flying but, even though it might have been true, it didn’t result in something really interesting. Indeed, what the guy did was just simply amazing, he saved everyone for crying out loud and it felt like a waste of time to spend so much time on the NTSB arguing otherwise. The Breakfast Club
Notes: Personally, I always had a rather hard time with John Hugues. Indeed, by now, I have seen almost all his directing efforts and none of his movies really impressed me. However, there was one notable exception and it is this flick which was indeed quite amazing. First of all, it was the first movie directed by Hughes that I saw so maybe I wasn’t fed up yet with his directing style. Above all, I thought it was the only movie he made for which I thoroughly enjoyed the tone. Indeed, usually, I think the plots he develops are utterly childish and hardly entertaining. This time, even though there were some fun moments, there were also some rather grim scenes and the balance between those moods was very well done. On top of that, the characters, who are usually terribly underwhelming in his work, were very well written, quite complex and rather fascinating to behold. It has always been said that John Hughes was great at creating some compelling portrayals of teenagers but I rather disagree. In my opinion, his teenagers are usually some underwhelming walking clichĆ©s but, in this movie, I have to admit it, he got it right though and gave the right amount of self-righteousness, arrogance and lack of self-esteem and confidence.

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Come and See (1985)
Notes: Well, the damned thing definitely deserves its notorious reputation and it is indeed by far the bleakest WWII movie I have seen. Of course, I’m well aware of the atrocities that happened back then in Western Europa but I’m not so familiar with what happened in Eastern Europa, in particular, the Soviet Union, but the horrors perpetuated there reached a really despicable level. To make it all even more horrific, everything was also told from the point of view of a very young boy. Eventually, this movie also displayed how kids might develop some massive PTSD by spending so much time, sometimes even years, in such war zone and by being relentlessly confronted with such horrific events. To be honest, I have to admit that it is a rather difficult movie to grasp though. Indeed, nothing is told in a straightforward way and, instead, you get a series of really chaotic events and, as a result, it can be frustrating to watch. However, if you manage to hold on to it, you might come to the conclusion that its chaotic nature could be actually a perfect reflection of the chaotic nature of war itself. Indeed, many more war movies might be easier to swallow but, in fact, all these movies are just way too neat and, as a result, they could be actually glorifying war, even if it was unintentional. Here, war is the stuff of nightmare that you will probably never forget and that’s probably how it should be.
