A good movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie but, if I recall it correctly, I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Basically, it is a rather typical British comedy with a fairly realistic social background. The interesting thing about this movie ” read more

Good Morning, Vietnam
Notes: Basically, this movie would be Robin Williams's first real commercial and critical hit (he would even get his first nomination for the Academy Award for the Best Actor in a Leading Role) and it would in fact provide the blue-print for most of his future work. To be honest, like most of the other popular movies starring this actor, I always had some mixed feelings about this flick. I mean, sure, the whole thing was fairly entertaining and Robin Williams really owned this part but, in my opinion, the whole thing was in fact rather shallow. For example, even though it was supposedly based on a true story, the actual guy never used comedy in his broadcasts and he said himself that if he would have done half the things Williams did in the film, he would have been court-martialed. So, even though it was taking place in a real war and even though it was based on a real DJ, the whole thing was in fact just a big fantasy, just some popcorn feature, and therefore, I always had a hard time to take the damned thing seriously.

A very good movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely rewatch it at some point. First of all, I have been defending Nicolas Cage for as long as I could but, I have to admit it, his career has been seriously underwhelming the last 10 years and most of his movies are p” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, I wonder how I actually ended up watching this movie. If I recall it correctly, it was broadcast on TV and since the review in my TV mag was really positive, I thought I might as well check it out. Basically, it was a rather complex feature mixing 3 different stories and, even though i” read more

Moonstruck (1987)
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and maybe I should give it a 2nd chance. The point is that this movie has a really solid reputation, the late Roger Ebert really loved it for example but, personally, I failed to see what was so amazing about the damned thing. I mean, as a matter of fact, I do have a weak spot for romantic-comedies but, I don’t know, I really had a hard time to connect with this tale. Sure, I have to admit it, it was a decent watch and Cher and Nicolas Cage (when he used to be one of the most interesting actors around) both gave some fine performances but I thought the whole thing was just way over the the top. Of course, it was supposed to be over the top but, in my case, I thought it was more annoying than actually entertaining. Basically, I wanted to slap them in their face and ask them to get their act together. They are meant to be each other, we got it, no need to make such a fuss about it.

An average movie

“With such an interesting director and above all such an all-star cast, it was not surprising that this movie had a pretty good buzz before it came out. However, when it was released, it didn’t make much waves after all. And, indeed, I’m afraid the whole thing didn’t really work. I mean, this s” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for Barbet Schroeder’s work and since there was a pretty cool cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. Back then, Barbet Schroeder had a decent run in the USA (I especially loved 'Revers” read more

Wall Street
Notes: Basically, it is another major classic directed by Oliver Stone but, to be honest, the first time I watched it, I thought it was actually slightly disappointing. I mean, it remains a very good movie, no doubt about it, but I thought that Charlie Sheen’s character was terribly bland and not very well developed. Furthermore, the whole thing about the young stockbroker being attracted by greed but who ultimately rejects it was rather boring and pedestrian. Still, there was some great stuff here, absolutely. First of all, Michael Douglas was just terrific as Gordon Gekko and only to see him makes it worth watching the whole damned thing and, in my opinion, he should have been the main character. Basically, that was the main problem with this movie. Indeed, even though the movie was against Gekko, yelling that he is the bad guy and that you should despise him, deep down, everyone thought he was awesome and this character became an icon, a role model for many guys who wanted to succeed in the stock-exchange world. In spite of its flaws, it still a pretty good flick though.

A great classic

“Since I'm a huge fan of Indiana Jones, of course, I just love this flick. Even though it is not my favorite one in this franchise (that would be the 3rd installment), it is still quite awesome. Indeed, when I was a kid, I saw it so many times with my father but even twenty years later, I keep watchi” read more

A good movie

“I think it must be at least 10 years since I saw a movie directed by Takeshi Kitano for the last time. It is a real shame because he was definitely one of my favorite directors in the 90’s. The Untouchables
Notes: After ‘Scarface’, it must be the biggest movie he has made in the 80’s so I was really eager to check it out and I had some rather high expectations. Eventually, even though I thought it was indeed pretty good and quite entertainining, to be honest, I was actually expecting something more and I thought it would be much better. I mean, the cast was quite brilliant (Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia, Robert De Niro) and it is thanks to this film that Kevin Costner and Andy Garcia would eventually break through. I don’t know, I thought the whole thing was a little too generic and I would have preferred if it would have been a little bit grittier. On the other hand, it has been a while since I have watched it and I will definitely re-watch it at some point to make up my mind for good about the damned thing.

A good movie

“When I heard that we would watch a movie dealing with the current immigrants crisis with my filmclub, I have to admit that I was a little bit apprehensive.
