My Own Private Idaho
Notes: Basically, it is one of those movies that I saw as a teenager which just had some huge impact on me. I mean, back in those days, I was already fascinated by movies but I hadn’t watch so many great movies yet so I was basically a blank page, ready to absorb pretty much anything. Anyway, I had never seen anything like this before and, at the time, I thought the whole thing was quite mesmerizing to behold. Through the years, I always enjoyed Gus van Sant's work and it must be one of his most typical movies. Concerning Keanu Reeves, even if you like it or not, he will keep a steady career ever since showing up in such massive classics like ‘The Matrix’ or some more dubious choices like ‘Chain Reaction’. Above all, this movie would be always linked to River Phoenix, one of the most highly regarded young actors of his generation who would die just a couple of years after this movie.

An average movie

“Following the amazing ‘What's Eating Gilbert Grape’, still one of my favorite movies after all these years, Lasse Hallström came up with this drama. This movie was also written by Callie Khouri who won just a couple of years before an Academy Award for writing ‘Thelma & Louise’ and ther” read more

“Even though Richard Linklater has directed 2 of the best movies released recently (‘Boyhood’ and ‘Before Midnight’), somehow, this director is still not really among my top favorites. “Apparently, this is one of the most obscure movies I have seen since I’m still the only one who has rated the damned thing on this website. Basically, it is one of these typical Dutch romantic-comedies, my wife is a huge fan, but I usually don’t care much for them. Still, I have to admit it, eve” read more

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Notes: My wife is actually a huge fan of those thrillers involving serial-killers and I'm pretty sure this movie is her favorite one in this genre. Personally, I actually always had some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, of course, it is a classic, it is very well made and entertaining and Anthony Hopkins was just great in a star making performance. And yet, this movie exactly embodies what bothers me in this genre. Indeed, while my wife might argue that those things actually really happens in real life, I tend to roll my eyes in pure disbelief during the whole thing. The worst gimmick in this genre, in my opinion and aside of the obligatory twist ending, is the whole concept of the omnipotent serial killer who hears and sees pretty much everything, can apparently predict the future and has access to a limitless amount of cash. I mean, don't misunderstand me, I do like this movie, it is really entertaining but, in my opinion, even though it might be the best movie in this genre, it still uses some of its worst tricks and therefore it is difficult for me to be completely blown away by the whole thing.

The Act of Killing
Notes: Well, it turned out to be a really weird and messed up documentary, that’s for sure. First of all, I have to confess, I wasn’t really aware of all the horrors that happened in Indonesia about 50 years ago and only therefore it was already a really valuable feature. Anyway, not only this movie deals with a massively traumatic experience but it deals with it in such a unique way, as a result, the whole thing was just as much fascinating as it was horrifying. Indeed, even though you might expect these executioners to regret their actions, most of them didn’t feel much guilt, in the contrary, they were actually proud of what they did and, as a result, this movie was more about the psychological impact then putting actual blame on people. I mean, if you see ‘Shoa’, everyone, even the former SS, agree that what happened in WWII was horrible but, then, Germany lost the war. In Indonesia, the same people who ordered the purge still have the power and, therefore, after so many decades, those ‘winners’ have been telling anyone that what they happened was actually justified creating this weird acceptation of a major human tragedy. And yet, when you get to see Anwar Congo, right from the beginning, you wonder if he really believes everything he says and, indeed, slowly, after reproducing these terribly deeds, his attitude changes and, towards the end, he seems to be finally devastated by what he has done.

A very good movie

“To be honest,  I didn’t really know what this movie was about before watching the damned thing and the main reason I wanted to check it out was because it was included in the ‘1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die’ list. The Act of Killing
What is it about? A documentary which challenges former Indonesian death-squad leaders to reenact their mass-killings in whichever cinematic genres they wish, including classic Hollywood crime scenarios and lavish musical numbers.

“Once again, after 'Borgman' and 'The Lobster', Ria went for another really absurd black comedy but I think, this time,  she really outdid herself. Indeed, it was so weird, I'm afraid I never really managed to get a grip on the damned thing. I mean, first of all, even though it was taking place in H” read more

Date Movie
Note : Wow, it really deserves its poor reputation and it turned out to be much worse than I anticipated. I mean, I never cared for the parody genre to start with but this must be the very worst one I have seen. Why should I start? There was not one funny joke at all and, to watch this movie 10 years later, it makes the whole thing also dated and even more cringe-inducing to behold. The other thing that bothered me is that instead of focusing on the romantic-comedies, they keep throwing some references to some other movies coming from very various kinds and, as a result, it all felt totally random and even less effective.
