johanlefourbe posted a review of The Surprise

An average movie

“This was already the 3rd Dutch movie I saw this week and, out of the 3, the one I enjoyed the most. First of all, it was the first directing effort for Mike van Diem, 18 long years after ‘Karakter’ for which he managed to win the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film. Well, to be hone” read more

Notes: Ever since I have seen 'Dead Man' when it was released, I have always been a fan of Jim Jarmusch. To be honest, I didn't care much about his latest work but I still try to catch his movies when I get the chance. Anyway, even though his directing debut ‘Permanent Vacation’ was not entirely successful, this movie was a huge critical success at the time and it is usually considered as a huge influence on American independent cinema. Eventually, I think the whole thing is pretty much a matter of taste. Indeed, Jarmusch is definitely one of the very few real American authors like Woody Allen, Terrence Malick or Wes Anderson, and I have a lot of respect for his work. On top of that, the black and white cinematography was quite gorgeous. Still, I found it hard to really connect with the whole thing as it shows a deliberate slow pace, there is no real plot whatsoever and none of his characters were either likeable or really interesting. The fact is also that this movie was made 30 years ago and, at the time, it might have been ground-breaking but since then, I have seen tons of similar Artsy features so its impact is not as big as it used to be.

“To be honest, I didn’t expect much from this flick but since my wife has a weak spot for such Dutch romantic comedies, I thought we might as well check it out together. Well, even though my wife thought it was a decent watch, I thought it was in fact seriously underwhelming. I mean, is it me or ar” read more

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie. Still, I remember it very well. Indeed, after watching ‘Bad Lieutenant’ back in the 90’s, I became a huge fan of Abel Ferrara’s work and this movie was therefore definitely a high priority for me. “For some reasons, I have actually watched most of the movies directed by François Ozon (14 out of 16) which is rather surprising because I never became a huge fan of his work. For example, even though his directing debut ‘Sitcom’ turned out to be a somewhat cult-classic in France, I thought it ” read more

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Even though many think that ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest’ might be the best movie directed by Milos Forman, I tend to think that this movie might be actually slightly overrated (in fact, I need to re-watch this movie as well). In my opinion, this classic was even better and I believe it is in fact the Magnum Opus of this director. Indeed, it is easily one of the most fascinating and original biopics ever made and, even though Forman would be making almost only biopics during the rest of his career (‘The People vs. Larry Flynt’, ‘Man on the Moon’, ‘Goya's Ghosts’), none of them would manage to reach the level of this masterpiece.

“For many years, I kept hearing from 2 of my favorites Listal members (the giraffe and Xanadon’t) that this movie was some kind of cult-classic so I was really eager to watch the damned thing. Furthermore, I really loved ‘American Splendor’ which was Shari Springer Berman’s  and Robert Pulci” read more

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. First of all, it must be one of the best titles ever conceived. Aside from that, it is actually a solid feature which has been completely forgotten since its release. It is mostly rememb” read more

Notes: Before watching this flick, I had some rather high expectations. I mean, with such a cast (Jack Nicholson, Kathleen Turner, Anjelica Huston) and such a prestigious director (John Huston), I was expecting something rather brilliant, I mean, even Roger Ebert was really enthousiast about it. Unfortunately, I didn't really like it. I mean, the cast was really good, especially Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner but I didn't like much the tone of the whole thing. Basically, it tried to be a dark comedy and mixed some romantic comedy elements with traditional maffia stuff but I thought the whole thing was rather uneven. Above all, I never really laughed during the whole duration and it is never a good sign when you are watching a comedy. Don't misunderstand me, it is not bad at all, Nicholson and Turner were both very good and perfectly cast and there were numerous interesting supporting characters but I just didn't care much about the plot.
