(A review of
Rollerball (1975))
Since this movie has a rather solid reputation as a cult-classic, I was quite eager to check it out. In fact, I did see at some point the awful remake they made about 15 years ago and I hoped this original version would be much better. Well, to be honest, even if I still believe that the concept is great, it didn't turn out to be a great movie after all. Basically, even if it wasn't completely dumb as the remake was, it wasn't really smart either, I'm afraid. Futhermore, even if James Caan really had the looks to play this character, his performance was still rather bland. On the other hand, he wasn't helped by the fact that his character was rather poorly written. Indeed, I never understood why was the guy so obsessed about refusing to quit a seemingly violent, dangerous and even rather stupid game. Futhermore, the way Caan played the character during the various games, it felt as if he stood there wondering what the hell was going on and what the hell was he doing here. Of course, he would utter at least twice 'I love this game!' which was just really heavy-handed and not convincing whatsoever. The rest of the movie dealing with this dystopian world also had some potential but it was still rather half-baked. I mean, sure, it wasn't a bad idea to have your main character looking for some answers, except maybe when he is a rather dim-witted professional football, I mean, rollerball player. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch though and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

(A review of
My Mother Mia madre)
I wasnāt really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Nanni Moretti, I was quite eager to check it out. To be honest, I have to admit that, even though I have always admired Morettiās work, somehow, I always had a hard time to really connect with his movies and this one wasnāt really different, Iām afraid. I mean, the whole thing was quite realistic and there has always been some intimate quality in his movies but I was never really sure what it was trying to achieve exactly. For example, the whole thing was apparently partly autobiographical but why did he choose to have the director being played by a woman? It didnāt help either that the characters were interesting but not really fascinating. Even worse was the situation with John Turturro. Indeed, it was pretty neat that such a fine American actor would be working with Moretti but, unfortunately, he was wasted playing a supposedly funny but in fact completely obnoxious character. On the other hand, Margherita Buy, whoĀ I had never seen her before but who's apparently a very famous actress in Italy, was really charismatic and she was able to convey so much emotion only with her beautiful eyes. Anyway, to conclude, even if I wasnāt completely blown away by the whole thing, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Nanni Morettiās work.Ā

(A review of
Focus)
I wasnāt really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, I have always had a weak spot for movies dealing with con artists and this movie was probably the sexiest one I have seen in this genre. Indeed, the whole thing looked really nice and, above all, Smith and Robbie had such a great chemistry together, it has been a while since I have seen such a charismatic couple. Unfortunately, even though they got some ingredients right, the whole thing didnāt really impress me after all. Indeed, eventually, the main issue I had was with the story which turned out to be rather disappointing. Like I mentioned before, Smith and Robbie were fine but it seems that Glenn Ficarra and John Requa put too much focus on their relationship and not enough on the story itself. For example,Ā there was not really a main plot and, instead,Ā the whole thing was awkwardly divided into 2 different cons. I have to admit that the 1st con was not bad but it was obviously too short so they had to come up with a 2nd con. However, this 2nd con was pretty weak, in fact, it had not much to do with a con scam and it seemed to be just some common theft. To make things worse, Iām pretty sure the twist at the end didn't really make sense and, above all, it actually slightly ruined Robbieās character. Indeed, during the 2nd half, I was expecting her to be running some elaborate scam but, in fact, she was still working on some very low level. Above all, they pretty much reduced her to a disgruntled ex-girlfriend. Still, in spite of its flaws, Smith and Robbie were actually quite spellbinding to behold so I still think it is worth a look but the damned thing could have been so much better though.Ā

(A review of
Hope Springs)
To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, I was surprised by how lame it actually turned out to be. Basically, it was one of these ill-conceived romantic-comedies in which nothing work at all. Let's talk about the plot for example. It was about an English man who got so depressed after he found out that his girlfriend was marrying someone else that he went off to visit a city called Hope just because he liked the name. That wasn't exactly the strongest concept ever but, to make things worse, at some point, his ex-girlfriend showed up (which was completely spoiled by the fact that Minnie Driver was displayed everywhere on the promotional material) to tell him that the wedding was some kind of joke(!), and then tries to win him over again. I mean, seriously,Ā was there anything in this summary that remotely sounded like a good idea? I don't think so. To make things worse, the characters were just rather poorly written. For example, Minnie Driver actually seemed to have fun with her role but there was nothing likeable about this woman and, even worse, there was absolutely no chemistry between her and the main character. On the other hand, HeatherĀ Graham's character was not much better, I'm afraid. I mean, she was first introduced as some kind of therapist but this idea was dropped after 5 mins. Then, out of the blue, she finishes a bottle of liquor early in the morning and, 10 minutes later, she gets naked in front of a total stranger with no explanation whatsoever. At least, the main castĀ (Colin Firth, Heather Graham, Minnie Driver) was quite charismatic but there is no doubt that it was one of the weakest romantic-comedies I have seen in quite some time and I don't think it is really worth a look.

(A review of
Small Apartments)
To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, the cast was indeed really neat (Billy Crystal, James Caan, Juno Temple, Peter Stormare, Johnny Knoxville, Rebel Wilson, James Marsden, Dolph Lundgren, Amanda Plummer, Rosie Perez, Saffron Burrows). Concerning the movie itself, well, it turned out to be a decent quirkie indie comedy but not much more than that, to be honest. That's an usual issue with such indie comedies with so many characters involved and such a rather short running time (about 90 mins), as a result, most of the characters turn out to be barely developed at all. In fact, even though you might expect the whole thing to be about the various tenants living in these crappy apartments, it actually did, but it is also focused on one of the tenants called Franklin Franklin and, as a result, there was a rather weak balance. I mean, if F. Franklin was supposed to be the main character, why even bother with the other sub-plots involving his neighbours? On the other hand, if this community was the main focus, why did they spend so much time on one of them? It didn't really help that none of the characters involved was really interesting or entertaining. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look though, especially if you like the genre.

(A review of
The Skeleton Twins)
To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, even if it turned out to be a decent watch, it wasn't much more than that, I'm afraid. I mean, Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig both delivered some solid performances, their characters were fairly well written and, on top of that, these two messed-up siblings were highly recognizable. Still, the whole thing never really grabbed me though. It was probably due to the fact that, by now, I have seen my share of indie comedy-dramas dealing with a dysfunctional family and this movie definitely didn't bring anything new to the table. Or maybe the whole thing should have been even darker in tone. For example, the fact that Luke Wilson's character was rather pathetic was a rather poor choice and I think it would have been more interesting, more complex, if she would have been cheating on a husband who was actually quite amazing, shattering in the process their seemingly perfect family. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really groundbreaking, I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

(A review of
High Flying Bird)
To be honest, I actually lost interest in Steven Soderbergh a while ago but since his last directing effort was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, it turned out to be a typical Soderbergh effort, with the usual qualities and shortcomings inherent to his work. First of all, the guy has a talent to find some very interesting subjects for his movies and this one was not an exception. Furthermore, he usually get some strong actors and AndrĆ© Holland delivered here another solid performance. I was also impressed by Zazie Beetz who, after seeing her in only 2 movies, is already shaping to become one of the most interesting actresses in the business. However, her character was actually a good example about what was wrong or, at leat, what was missing with this movie. I mean, Beetz was fine but, even though they tried to convince the viewers that this woman was super competent and talented, the only memorable thing she actually did during the whole thing was sleeping with their star basketball player. And, indeed, eventually, none of the characters, even the main character, was actually developed, in fact, even the whole thing actually felt rather half-baked. Ā Still, it was a very interesting and seemingly realistic look on the business behind professional top sports and, at least, Soderbergh managed to focus on his subject until the very end (not like in āUnsaneā for example). Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

(A review of
Room in Rome)
To be honest, this movie rather seemed to be some excuse to see some naked girls but, somehow, I still ended up watching the damned thing. Well, first of all, it actually turned out to be surprisingly tame after all. I mean, sure, you still get to see two beautiful girls completely naked through the whole duration but there were only maybe 3 rather short sex scenes after all. So, what did they do the whole night then in this apartment? Well, they spent their time talking and, suddenly, it became a rather minimalist romantic piece involving only one location and two characters. Unfortunately, even if I have a weak spot for the genre, the end-result was rather half-baked. I mean, it wasnāt necessarily a bad idea that they didnāt spend the whole movie having some great sex but their conversations were not really interesting, Iām afraid. As a result, it actually reminded me of āBefore Sunriseā but, to be honest, this movie never achieved the level of this classic. Indeed, with such a simple set-up, you need some amazing dialogues because, well, there is nothing else going on. However, here, they tried to go for a mix of realism and fantasy but it never really worked. For example, right from the start, they confessed that they might not be telling the truth and, sure, I understand that it might be interesting to pretend to be someone completely different to a stranger but, by confessing that they might be lying, this idea was then completely ruined. Furthermore, the fact that, at some point, they started to be honest after all made the whole thing also unnecessary messy and confusing. And, yet, in spite of its flaws, there was still something quite spellbinding about the damned thing (the fact that Elena Anaya and Natasha Yarovenko were both quite gorgeous probably helped) and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

(A review of
The Man Who Killed Don Quixote)
Like many other movie buffs, I have been waiting to see this movie for almost 20 years. In fact, Terry Gilliam had even been working on this project for about 30 years. Well, I wish I could say it had been worth the wait but, unfortunately, I really struggled to care about the damned thing. Eventually, I wonder how much Gilliam has changed his script and something tells me that the original version starring Jean Rochefort, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis would have been much better but Iām afraid we will never know. Above all, even though there were some good ideas, the damned thing was a mess very difficult to digest. Of course, you could argue that every Gilliam movie is pretty messy but the fact that it was just way too long (about 140 mins) without really going anywhere didnāt help either. On top of that, in spite of the excessive running time, there were only a handful characters involved and, except for the main character, nobody was developed whatsoever. For example, even if Jonathan Pryce was not bad, his character was basically a one-trick poney constantly repeating that he was actually really Don Quixote which was extremely tiresome very quickly. Eventually, like some other cursed movie projects like āThe Other Side of the Windā (which also managed to finally be released in 2018) or āDuneā by Jodorowski (which never got made), it seems that the legends around the doomed production of this movie were more interesting than the movie itself after all. Anyway, to conclude, even if this movie was rather disappointing, it is still worth a look, especially if you are a fan of Terry Gilliamās work.

(A review of
Minding the Gap)
Since I heard some interesting things about this movie, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, it turned out to be one of the finest documentaries I have seen in a very long time. What I liked the most was that there were just so many interesting layers. First of all, even though you mightĀ feel nothing about skateboarding, you'll have to admit that there was something quite spellbinding about watching these guys dashing through such a ugly urban landscape doing some incredible tricks. Indeed, in such a socially and economically deprived environment, they still found a way to push themselves creatively, honing their skills through hoursĀ of training, delivering something artistic while their relatives completely ignored them. But, of course, the whole thing went just way beyond skating. It was also an intimate look on these skaters and the fact that the director was one of them was something that you rarely get to see since, most of the time, a documentary maker is basically an outsider. As a result, the whole thing was just as much about Bing Liu himself than about his two friends. Concerning his buddies, it did help that they were both really charismatic. Eventually, as far as I was concerned, I was mostly intrigued by the way he handled Zack. Basically, the guy was/is one of his best friends but also a destructive loose cannon who happened to be also abusive with his girlfriend, something Bing Liu clearly struggled to deal with, especially with his own past as a victim of domestic violence. Anyway, I could go on forever, basically, it was a really strong documentary and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā
