A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 11 June 2019 09:14 (A review of The Founder)

Like everyone else, at least in the Western world, I grew up with McDonald’s so I was quite eager to see how this company started out. Well, to be honest, even though it was a decent watch, it didn’t to turn out to be anything really mind-blowing after all. I mean, right from the start, you already knew how it was going to end so the journey to get this conclusion had to be really interesting and/or surprising but it turned out to be generic and rather predictable. On top of that, they really struggled to provide some interesting supporting characters. Indeed, aside from Ray Kroc and the McDonald brothers, all the other characters were rather poorly developed and, as a result, they were all rather tedious. The worst one was probably Ray Kroc’s first wife. Indeed, it was such a thankless part for Laura Dern who did pretty much nothing else than whining all the time, even after his new project finally turned out to be a massive success. On the other hand, his 2nd wife played by Linda Cardellini was hardly more fascinating. Still, there is no doubt that Michael Keaton was a perfect choice to play the main character and he delivered here a really solid performance. The tricky thing was that, even though Kroc was pretty much the only one who believed in his project, we all knew that he was going to succeed at some point and how he got there was neither really impressive or shocking either. I mean, of course, you could argue that the guy had been terribly ruthless with the McDonald brothers but, on the other hand, he gave them several times the opportunity to get involved in the expansion of their franchise. They also seemed rather naïve and you might wonder what they were expecting by going into the franchise business. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still not bad and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 8 June 2019 05:45 (A review of MacGruber (2010) )

I wasn't expecting much from this flick but, somehow, I still ended up watching the damned thing. When it was released, it was a big commercial and critical flop but, to be honest, it was hardly surprising. Indeed, to turn a SNL sketch into a full length feature has always been a rather ill-conceived idea and this movie was a perfect example. And, yet, maybe because I had such a low expectations, I have to admit that it wasn't so bad after all. I mean, it still didn't really work but it was actually sometimes fairly entertaining which was rather surprising since I usually don't care at all about movies with a terribly stupid main character. Of course, all the jokes were rather cringe inducing and at least half of the movie was not funny at all but some of the jokes did work and the whole thing turned out to be much funnier than expected. Above all, the interaction with Ryan Philippe were pretty much spot-on through the whole duration and Kristen Wiig was not bad at all either. On the other hand, Val Kilmer delivered a rather generic and boring villain though. Anyway, to conclude, even though my rating is probably too generous here, I think the damned thing might actually be worth a look but probably only if you really like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 6 June 2019 09:23 (A review of Lady Bird)

Since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, it took me a while to get into this story. Indeed, during the first scene, when you get to see Lady Bird and her mother on some kind of road trip, I thought they were both rather obnoxious and I was worried for a while that the damned thing wouldn’t work for me after all. Fortunately, it slowly won me over though. Indeed, Greta Gerwig managed to create here such a realistic and compelling main character. Seriously, they even gave this teenager some acne which I had never seen before in such a movie dealing with teenagers. And, on top of that, Saoirse Ronan probably gave her best performance so far. Furthermore, her slightly messed up but highly recognizable relationship with her mother, the thing that bothered me at first, turned out to be actually quite spelldinding after all. Indeed, they both had flaws in their behaviour but you could feel that they were in fact mostly struggling more with themselves then actually with each other. Of course, at the end of the day, was the whole thing anything really ground-breaking? Not really but it was still one of the most realistic depictions of teenager life I have seen and the fact that it was coming from a woman provided a really interesting perspective. Anyway, to conclude, I really liked this flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 5 June 2019 08:49 (A review of Detroit)

Since I kept hearing some interesting things about this flick and since I have a weak spot for Kathryn Bigelow’s work, I was quite eager to check this flick. Well, following the acclaimed ‘The Hurt Locker’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’, Bigelow delivered another strong historical politically charged thriller and the end-result was once again pretty impressive. Indeed, you might wonder if a white woman was the best choice for this material but the whole thing still looked great. Above all, it was quite gritty and realistic and you could get a decent feeling on what it must have been liked back then in Detroit. To be honest, I had my doubts about the running time though. It is not really that it was too long but, from the moment they started to move the action to the infamous Algiers Motel, the pacing slowed down so drastically. In fact, the movie didn’t move forward for maybe 50 minutes and I wasn’t sure if it was really the right decision. I mean, on one hand, it was dreadful to see and you can only imagine how traumatizing it must have been for the survivors so it was effective. On the other hand, I can’t help wondering if it would have worked just as well with spending slightly less running time on these specific events. Furthermore, in spite of the fairly long running time, you never really get a clear idea about what’s exactly going on with Philip Krauss. Indeed, if you would believe this movie, he was pretty much responsible for everything that happened at the Algiers Motel but you never really understand why. Was he just a bigot or was he actually kind of crazy or even some kind of psychopath? Indeed, even though all the other characters were fairly well developed, they were all rather straightforward though and Krauss was, in my opinion, the only real complex character but it seems that the makers didn’t really know what to do with him after all. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn’t completely convinced me, it was still a strong and powerful drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 4 June 2019 11:00 (A review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri)

Since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out. Well, even though I did like it, I wasn’t completely blown away by the whole thing to be honest. Even though this movie might seem to be, at first, about the rebooting of a murder investigation, it had in fact little do with this investigation at all after all. Basically, it was mostly dealing with 2 characters and how they have to face guilt, judgement and then redemption. However, if this process worked fine with the main character thanks to a really strong performance delivered by Frances McDormand, I wasn’t completely convinced with what happened to Jason Dixon though. Indeed, from the moment that he reads the letter that Willoughby left him, they completely flipped his character around. I mean, so far, Dixon was a fairly pathetic incompetent and easy to hate cop and it was actually quite funny to hear Willoughby saying that he was or could be a good cop since we saw completely the opposite so far. However, from this point on, this character changed drastically, even showing some decent detective skills but this change was rather hard to swallow. Of course, I don’t blame Sam Rockwell, the guy gave another strong performance, it’s just that this story seemed to have just too much impact on his character. Still, it was a rather complex tale with some interesting characters and I should probably re-watch it at some point to make up my mind for good about the damned thing. Anyway, to conclude, even though I wasn’t completely sold, it was still a really solid comedy-drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 3 June 2019 09:55 (A review of A Bigger Splash)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Luca Guadagnino and since there was a really nice cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, as usual with Guadagnino, the whole thing looked great and, only for this, it was a pleasure to watch this flick. Furthermore, the cast was fine (Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson) and they all delivered some really solid performances. And, yet, even though I enjoyed most of this movie, it didn’t completely work though. The biggest issue was that even though this movie was supposed to be a thriller, most of it didn’t feel like a thriller for most of the duration. Eventually, it was only during the 3rd act that the whole thing suddenly became some Hitchcockian thriller but it came too late in the game. Of course, you could argue that it was actually interesting that Guadagnino didn’t follow the standard rules of the genre but, in my opinion, he should have dropped the genre and go for a drama instead which the movie actually already was, at least, until the final act. Concerning the characters, they were at first fairly interesting but, to be honest, for too long, nothing much really happened and, as a result, they started to become slightly pathetic. On the other hand, I really liked how they subtly displayed that Harry and Penelope had after all a rather similar behaviour. Indeed, even though Harry was very loud and Penelope was rather introvert, they actually both displayed a rather predatory selfish behaviour, usually pushing people’s buttons in order to get what they want regardless of the impact it might have on the people around them. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Luca Guadagnino’s work.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 1 June 2019 12:37 (A review of Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising)

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, I do think it is a bad idea that they keep greenlighting this sequels to some comedies which might have been successful at the box-office when these comedies were in fact nothing really amazing to start with.To make things worse, in this case, the beginning was just so lame. Indeed, it seems that they really struggled to start up the whole thing and it felt rather awkward. Above all, the jokes were just abysmal. Fortunately, from the moment you get to see Teddy Sanders playing poker with his college buddies, I was amazed by how much they managed to recover the damages from this point on. Sure, the whole thing never became anything really amazing, they pretty much remade the first movie, the only difference was that they had to face a sorority instead of a fraternity but it was entertaining enough. I also did appreciate how they displayed that most of the activities involved in a fraternity are actually pretty lame and that, above all, the way they handle women is just appalling. Anyway, to conclude, pretty much like its predecessor, it is probable that my rating might be too generous here but I guess it is actually worth a look but only if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 31 May 2019 09:51 (A review of Godzilla: King of the Monsters)

I wasn't exactly dying to see this sequel but Nick, my step-son, is a huge fan of monsters flick so we had to see this one in the movie theatre. Well, to be honest, I really struggled to care about the damned thing. First of all, I have to admit that I didn't remember much what happened in the previous installment but the plot was rather confusing. Above all, the damned thing was supposed to be dealing with some huge monsters destroying everything so it should have been some brainless fun entertainment but the tone was just so serious and it got on my nerves how they constantly tried to give some rational explanation about the ridiculous events going on. Then, even if the cast was really neat, there was just way too many human characters involved, there wasn't enough time to develop any ot them and none of them was really interesting or entertaining. The worse one was probably the one played by Vera Farmiga who kept switching sides depending of the needs of the plot and the most disappointing one was probably the one played by Millie Bobby Brown. Indeed, following her breakthrough performance in 'Stranger Things', it was pretty neat to see the young actress in her first movie but, seriously, what was the point of her character? She had completely zero impact on the plot and you wonder why her mother brought her along. Anyway, I have to admit that Gozilla and the other monsters were seriously badass, especially Ghidorah, so, at least, the damned thing was really spectacular. To conclude, I guess it was still a decent watch but, to be honest, I think I'm pretty much done with this franchise.

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 30 May 2019 02:44 (A review of Roald Dahl's Esio Trot)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have always been a huge fan of Dustin Hoffman, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, eventually, I didn't care at all about the damned thing, I'm afraid. Of course, I have to admit that I have never really cared for Roald Dahl's work but this must be the most boring story he has ever cooked up. Seriously, even though it was probably supposed to be quirky and charming, it was just so damned simplistic. I mean, the whole idea to swap a turtle every day with another one and that the owner wouldn't notice the difference was just lame. In fact, there was such a lack of plot and/of interesting characters, that a good chunk of the running time was allocated to the narrator played by James Corben. I mean, I won't blame Corben but what was the added value of his narration after all? At least, Dustin Hoffman and Judy Dench were both quite charming but it was rather sad to see some actors with such high skills using their talents for such tedious material. Anyway, to conclude, I have to admit that it wasn't completely awful but it was also never interesting or entertaining either and, therefore, I don't think it is worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 11 months ago on 29 May 2019 09:04 (A review of The Age of Adaline)

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might  as well check it out. Well, basically, it turned out to be some kind of spin on ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ concept but, this time, it was dealing with a woman who didn’t get old anymore. Well, even if this idea was nothing really original, it was not bad though. Eventually, the biggest issue was after all with Blake Lively. I mean, she wasn’t awful, in fact, it was quite brave that she took this part which was her most challenging character so far but, even if she tried really hard, I never had the feeling that I was watching a 107 year old woman on the screen. She wasn’t helped by the fact that they turned her character into some kind of genius which was pretty lame. Of course, you could argue that her brain didn’t degenerate like for the rest of us but it was a stretch to say that she would somehow remember all kinds of random trivia through her long life. Anyway, the fact that Lively was maybe not the best choice to play the lead was even more obvious when she was with Ellen Burstyn who was so pitch-perfect each time she showed up. I was also fairly impressed by Harrison Ford who was also quite convincing. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch though and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
