An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 25 April 2019 08:44 (A review of Orphan)

Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, I really struggled to get into this flick. I don’t know, maybe I wasn’t in the right mood but I didn’t really get what was so ‘fun’ or’ entertaining’ about seeing some evil kid killing a bunch of people. I have to admit that the cast was fine though and it is very rare to see some decent actors in a horror flick like this one. However, even if Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard had a decent chemistry, most of their decisions and actions were dictated by the plot and not by what these characters would actually choose to do. Anyway, there were just so many things that rubbed me in the wrong way. Basically, it is a movie that toys with the concept that, since you were not involved in the first years of an orphan, they can never really be trusted which is just an appalling idea. Furthermore, if you would believe this flick, you shouldn’t trust ‘weird’ kids and you should even be entitled to make fun of them since they could actually turn out be some psychotic killers. Finally, it was just ridiculous to see a shrink deliver a full psychological profile of her client after just one session. At least, I have to admit that the 3rd act was actually fairly entertaining and effective and the twist at the end was actually not bad but, still, most of the damned thing didn’t really work for me. Anyway, to conclude, even though I didn’t like it much, I have to admit that, in the evil kid genre, it might be one of the better movies I have seen so I guess it is worth a look if you like the genre.

An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Jake Gyllenhaal, I was really eager to check it out. Well, even though the whole thing had some potential, I wasn’t really convinced, to be honest. Basically, in my opinion, it was one of these movies that try to be original but actually end up being rather random. Of course, you might argue that life is pretty random but, in this case, the damned thing was just too damned quirky for my taste. Furthermore, I did like the burgeoning relationship going on between Gyllenhaal’s and Watts’s characters but, instead of developing this relationship, they put the focus on her teenage son which was a mistake. Indeed, it was just so lazy, generic and predictable to see this rebellious but actually really cool teenager getting along with this messed-up but actually really cool grown-up. Also, it was such a pity to see the lovely Naomi Watts pretty much wasted here playing another half-baked character. Still, it was not bad and it was a decent take on the grieving process. Above all, the whole thing was still quite watchable thanks to Jake Gyllenhaal who gave here another solid performance and the guy basically remains one of the best actors of his generation. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look, if only to see Gyllenhaal nailing another performance.

An average movie

To be honest, after this movie had been trashed by the critics, I wasn't expecting much it but since it still turned out to be a huge box-office success, I thought I might as well check it out. The fact that so many people turned out to see this movie didn't really surprise me though. I mean, the Transformers and The Fast and The Furious franchises have displayed that you can make a lot of money with some seriously weak movies. No, what really amazed me was that such a rather weak movie could reach such a high score on IMDb (8.1 right now). Anyway, thanks to Freddie Mercury's incredible charisma, Queen's catchy music and an amazing performance by Ramy Malek, the damned thing was still watchable but there is no doubt that everything else was pretty lame. I mean, basically, right from the start, it was obvious that they wouldn't take any risks so they delivered a really straightforward biopic. Indeed, it seems that the only goal of the makers was to reach most of the milestones regarding this legendary band and it did it without much passion or conviction which was obviously rather disappointing but it was made worse by the fact that they messed up so many real facts about Mercury and Queen in general. The way they handled Mercury's sexuality was also rather bewildering. I mean, they put a lot of time and focus on how he met Mary Austin but his first gay love affair was apparently with some random truck driver in the US? Afterwards, they gave some very short glimpses of gay clubs and parties but it was never properly developed which was rather surprising since the director, Bryan Singer, is gay himself so you would have expected a more convincing approach from him, but, on the other hand, he did get fired from the job before completing the shoot. Anyway, to conclude, even if it wasn't the worst biopic I have seen, it was still pretty weak but I guess it is still worth a look, if only to witness Queen and Freddy Mercury's awesome charisma and for Rami Malek's stellar performance.

An average movie

Since I really enjoyed 'Gerald's Game', I was quite eager to see another directing effort from Mike Flanagan and since this one was available on Neflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, with one location and basically two characters, it must have been the most minimalist thriller I have seen and I definitely have a weak spot for such minimalist features, especially when they are well put together. Still, even though Flanagan managed to make the most of it, I'm afraid it was still missing something though. For example, in 'Gerald's Game' which also had a really small scale, they added a youth trauma to the main character which created a very interesting extra layer. Here, however, it was extremely simplistic and the whole thing was pretty much reduced to an endless cat-and-mouse game between the killer and the main character. Furthermore, did the fact that the main character was deaf and mute really provided some added value? I'm not so sure. I mean, since they were in the middle of nowhere, she just could have been screaming, it wouldn't have made much of a difference. On top of that, I was rather surprised that, even though the main character was deaf and mute, the movie relied a lot on sound effects and music and I would have chosen to put many more silent scenes but that was apparently something that didn't interest Flanagan. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent cheap horror flick and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 19 April 2019 05:23 (A review of Survivor)

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, I'm afraid the damned thing turned out to be even weaker than I expected. Seriously, pretty much nothing worked in this flick. I mean, the plot was just terribly generic and boring and all the cast involved (Milla Jovovich, Pierce Brosnan, Dylan McDermott, Robert Forster, Angela Bassett) gave some rather weak performances, except maybe Pierce Brosnan. Indeed, the only fun thing with this flick was to see Brosnan playing the bad guy for once and he was maybe the only convincing actor but his character was still terribly bland and underwritten. On the other hand, even though Milla Jovovich still looks quite gorgeous, I was rather surprised by how weak she was but, when I think about it, did she ever really impressed me with her acting skills? Concerning James McTeigue, well, the only  thing impressive about his directing career is that each new movie he has delivered so far has managed to be weaker than his previous one and this flick turned out to be an all-time low. Anyway, to conclude, I think I was actually rather generous with my rating here, the damned thing was just seriously weak and I don't think it is worth a look at all.

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 18 April 2019 11:02 (A review of Jackie)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since this movie had received some decent reviews and since I have weak spot for  Natalie Portman, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, in my opinion, this movie struggled with a similar challenge faced by ‘Diana’ and ‘Grace of Monaco’. Indeed, all these movies worked really hard to make Diana, Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy look really amazing but none of these movies managed to convince me. In this case, they used some gimmicks like the fake interview (even if such an interview did take place, the content was definitely made up) or the fake conversation with a priest to give some extra depth to this woman. They even went for a random chronology which is just one of the cheapest tricks to make a simple story look much more complicated than it actually is. I know, it might sound like this movie was very lame but it was actually not bad at all, at least, it was miles better than the terrible ‘Diana’ and ‘Grace of Monaco’. Indeed, the whole thing looked great and, above all, Natalie Portman was really impressive and easily gave her one of her best performances. In fact, many people thought she had a shot to win the Academy Award for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (she she did get a nomination though) but the fact that the movie itself was nothing really amazing pretty much ruined her chances. Anyway, to conclude, even if the whole thing didn’t really blow me away, I still think it is worth a look, if only to see Portman nailing another fine performance.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 16 April 2019 11:13 (A review of Triple Frontier)

Since I enjoyed so far all the movies directed by J.C. Chandor, I was quite eager to check this flick, especially since it was available on Netflix. Well, unfortunately, even though it was still a decent watch, I’m afraid it still turned out to be his weakest movie so far. The biggest issue I had was that, even though I have to admit that I didn’t know anything about the plot before watching this flick, the damned thing still turned out to be so generic. I mean, by now, the whole concept of a team of a special forces operatives planning a heist has been done many times before and this movie didn’t provide anything really new to the genre. At least, Chandor ‘s directing was once again really solid, the whole thing looked really convincing and there was such a really neat cast involved (Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, Pedro Pascal). Another thing that I did appreciate about his group was that there was no backstabbing involved. Eventually, even though their characters were actually barely developed, they all made the most of it and, with a slightly more original story, it could have been actually pretty damned amazing. Anyway, to conclude, even it turned out to be another rather forgettable Netflix feature, I still think it is worth a look though, if only for the cast involved.

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 11 months ago on 14 April 2019 06:02 (A review of Thunder Road)

I really had no idea what to expect from this flick but that's the great thing about our film club, is that you end up watching some movies that you otherwise would never see. Anyway, it turned out to be a really pitch-black comedy and, to be honest, I usually have a hard time to care about such comedies constantly making fun of a rather  pathetic main character. However, you have to give some credit to Jim Cummings who not only wrote and directed the damned thing but, above all, gave a very intense performance. So, it was a hell of a one-man-show and, basically, how much you will like this movie all depends on how much you will care or connect with Jim Arnaud. On the other hand, even if his 'speech' at the funeral didn't really have the intended result, at least, he did show up which is more than you can say about his siblings. However, this movie did feature one of the most random overdose I have ever seen. As a result, after a long succession of painful or even tragic moments for Arnaud, it seemed that things were finally looking up for him but you might wonder if it only happened just because Jim Cummings the director needed to conclude his tale on a rather unlikely positive note. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really groundbreaking, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 11 months ago on 14 April 2019 11:50 (A review of Redemption)

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, it turned out to be another generic and rather tedious Jason Statham vehicle. I mean, the guy has done worse during his career but there was still a terrible lack of ambition displayed in this movie. For example, it was interesting that Statham played for once a vulnerable man. Unfortunately, very soon, the main character cleaned up his act and became another killing machine but, by now, I have seen Statham playing this kind of characters too many times to care anymore. Then, there was another sub-plot involving some nun which was actually not bad either, in fact, there was enough material to make a whole movie focusing only this character, but it didn't mix very well with the main plot involving Statham's character. Above all, it was just so lame to have not only this former homeless guy but also this nun turn into some kind of model, and, to make things worse, this two victims of major makeovers ended up in the sack together. In fact, there were some interesting darker elements but there were lost in a typical average Statham action flick. Concerning Steven Knight, who released the same year 'Locke' and who was also responsible for the amazing 'Peaky Blinders' and 'Taboo', it was rather surprising to see this guy delivering something so half-baked. Anyway, to conclude, even if I have seen worse, the damned thing was still pretty weak and I don't think it is really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 11 months ago on 13 April 2019 07:54 (A review of What Happened to Monday)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Noomi Rapace and since this movie was available on Netflix, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, even though the concept definitely had some potential, to be honest, the damned thing still turned out to be rather disappointing after all. The first thing that bothered me was this idea of forcing people to have only 1 child and considering as a solution. I mean, even without such a law, most Western countries are nowadays already struggling with the ageing of their population and, as a result, we have already not enough people working to support all the elders. With such a political system, it would drastically accelerate this process with some dramaticate economical consequences. So, right from the start, as you can see, I was hardly convinced by this concept. However, it was just really awesome to see Noomi Rapace playing seven siblings, very often in the same room, and, once again, she just really nailed it. Unfortunately, it's too bad Tatiana Maslany already did something very similar with the TV-show 'Orphan Black'. Concerning the story itself, I was again not really impress. I mean, at some point, the Settman Siblings were under attack and the best thing they could think of was to hide behind a mirror. Even worse, they didn't seem to have a plan B, like 'what should we do if we are discovered?'. Eventually, they actually simply stayed at home after surviving this first attack against them which didn't make much sense. I won't mention also the various twists which were all fairly predictable. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didn't work for me, I have to admit that the concept was not bad and, above all, just to see Noomi Rapace playing seven different characters, the damned thing is still actually worth a look.
