An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 27 July 2017 07:29 (A review of The Raven)

I wasnā€™t sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though the concept of focusing on the last days of Edgar Allen Poe was pretty neat, unfortunately, pretty much everything else didnā€™t really work though. In fact, somehow, it reminded me of ā€˜In the Heart of the Seaā€™. Indeed, in this recent movie from Ron Howard, instead of simply adapting ā€˜Mody Dickā€™, they went for an adaptation of a bookĀ  about how Herman Melville was inspired by a true story to write his own literary classic which was such a convoluted concept. In this case, instead of really telling the life of Poe or simply adapting one of his classic tales, they went for some typical serial-killer inspired by Poeā€™s work which was such a weak idea. Furthermore, I thought that John Cusack was rather miscast to play the famous writer. Indeed, Cusack is one of these actors who always play every characters pretty much the same away everytime again and his usual quirkiness didnā€™t work here. In my opinion, they should have chosen someone else to play the famous dark and tormented writer. Still, the whole thing was not completely worthless. Indeed, James McTeigue has a nice visual style and the whole thing looked really good. Furthermore, Alice Eve remains such a charming actress. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws and Ā even thoughĀ the whole thing was still rather misguidedĀ , it was still watchable and I guess it might be worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 26 July 2017 08:34 (A review of Enemy of the State)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again. According to IMDb, it is apparently Tony Scottā€™s 3rd best movie only behind ā€˜True Romanceā€™ and ā€˜Man on Fireā€™ and I have to admit that it is indeed a really entertaining movie. Indeed, Tony Scott has always been a solid action flick director and he delivered here one of his most effective features. What was also pretty neat with this movie is that it was actually pretty realistic and even prophetic, considering the Edward Snowden scandal that occurred only a few years ago. Furthermore, there was some neat tributes to obviously ā€˜The Conversationā€™ but, on top of that, with Will Smith playing this ordinary guy involved in some convoluted conspiracy, they gave also a more subtle reference to Alfred Hitchcockā€™s work. Unfortunately, Tony ScottĀ apparentlyĀ couldnā€™t help it and the guy still had to dumb the whole thing down. For example, the opening scene was rather ridiculous. Indeed, why on Earth should be Jon Voightā€™s character present on this crime scene? It didnā€™t make any sense. And, of course, even though this movie should have ended with something really dark, cynical and rather depressing, they forced the most ludicrous happy-ending you can imagine. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit that I really have a weak spot for the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 24 July 2017 08:38 (A review of The Man in the Iron Mask)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, even though my wife always had a weak spot for this movie, I always had a hard time to care about Ā the damned thing. I have to admit it, it was still a decent watch and probably the most ambitious adaptation I have seen dealing with the musketeers but I'm afraid it was actually victim of its own ambition. I mean, sure, there was an impressive cast involved Ā (Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, GĆ©rard Depardieu, Gabriel Byrne, Anne Parillaud, Judith GodrĆØche, Peter Sarsgaard, Hugh Laurie) but it was so over-crowded that there was barely any room to develop any of these characters. The funny thing was that, even though they all delivered some decent performances, DiCaprio, easily one of the best actors around nowadays, was probably the weakest of them all. Indeed, even though it took some balls to play such a rather despicable character just after becoming overnight a huge star thanks to 'Titanic', he was never convincing here and I always had the feeling that I was watching a young American pretending to be a very mean king. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, it is watchable and I guess it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 23 July 2017 07:07 (A review of Hemingway & Gellhorn)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, I have to admit that I didn't know much about Ernest Hemingway before watching this movie but, apparently, his life could definitely provide some material to make a very good movie. Unfortunately, this movie however didn't really work out, I'm afraid. The first mistake they made was to constantly mix some real vintage documentary footage with some fake footage and with the rest of the movie. I mean, it could have been a nice gimmick if they used it once but they kept going back and forth from black and white to full color over and over again and this trick became so annoying after a while. I guess they wanted to do something similar to what was done in 'Forrest Gump' but in this classic, it was done with much more subtlety and 20 years later, this effect is not so impressive anymore. Concerning the rest of the movie, sure Hemingway and Gellhorn were some really interesting characters but the makers apparently didn't really know what to do with them. I mean, on one hand, they wanted us to believe that Gellhorn was a strong woman who made her career thanks to her own skills but, time and time again, they showed that she couldn't have done much without Hemingway's help. Anyway, Ā in spite of its flaws, I still think it was a decent watch but they could have deliver something much better with this material.Ā

A very good movie

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 23 July 2017 09:53 (A review of The Broken Circle Breakdown)

Thanks to my filmclub, I discovered Felix Van Groeningen and I was quite eager to check this movie which was apparently his best directing effort so far. Well, I wasn't disappointed, that's for sure, Ā as the damned thing turned out to be a fascinating and heartbreaking drama. I mean, to be honest, the story itself was actually rather generic. Basically, they gave us a nice couple who falls in love and when everything seems to be perfect for them, they are faced with a massive tragedy which was obviously nothing new. However, the big difference with this movie is that this couple was just fascinating to follow. Indeed, even though they were immensely charismatic, they didn't feel like the usual super-stars you get in your typical Hollywood production, they felt like some genuinely regular people which made them much more mesmerizing to follow. It did help that the music they played was just amazing and, of course, Van Groeningen should get some credit as well as the directing was really strong here. Hell, even this usually terribly useless and annoying gimmick of going back and forth in time worked very well thanks to him. To conclude, even if it was maybe nothing really groundbreaking, I really loved the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 22 July 2017 07:28 (A review of Backdraft)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. I have noticed that, even though there are countless movies about cops, there are somehow not so many movies about firefighters and this movie must be by far the most famous one about this subject. It is easy to understand why as the firefighting scenes were just so damned impressive, even more than 20 years later. Indeed, you really get the feeling that you are out there with those guys and they managed to give the fire some kind of mesmerising quality. Unfortunately, to be honest, pretty much everything else wasn't really good, I'm afraid. I mean, they had a really solid cast and they did what they could but instead of focusing only on the MacCaffrey brothers which seemed to be like a no-brainer to me, they kept adding layers upon layers of boring sub-plots. Indeed, you had some romantic angles for the two brothers, some investigation, even some interrogation scene with some kind Hannibal Lecter figure,.... And Brian managed to join the firefighters not once but twice during the whole thing. Basically, it felt as if they didn't really trust this material, that they felt that it wasn't dramatic enough somehow which was too bad. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit that it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 22 July 2017 09:40 (A review of The Call)

I wasn't really expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Halle Berry, I thought I might as well check it out. Apparently, if you would put aside the X-Men franchise, it was the first box-office hit scored by Herry during the last 10 years but, to be honest, it wasn't really good, I'm afraid. I mean, I loved the concept of focusing on a 911 call-center operator, I myself worked in various call-centers for more than 10 years, so it was pretty neat to see a movie dealing with my line of work. Well, as long as the movie was focusing on the 911 call-center, it worked fine, even if the gorgeous Halle Berry gave a rather weak performance and even if some details just didn't work (for example, on a regular basis, you would see the whole work floor dropping their work to follow what was going with Berry's character, as if everyboy would suddenly stop to call 911). Unfortunately, even though they made it pretty obvious that a 911 operator usually never gets closure on a call, they gave us a really stupid 3rd act during which the main character suddenly became some kind of detective and resolved the case on her own. Anyway, to be honest, I think my rating might be generous here but, in spite of its flaws, it gave me a good idea of how a 911 call-center might work and I think the damned thing is still worth a look.Ā

A great classic

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 22 July 2017 06:59 (A review of Double Indemnity )

Since I'm a massive movie buff, of course, I had to watch this movie at some point. Well, eventually, I wasn't disappointed, that's for sure. Indeed, it was a spellbinding film noir, easily one of the best movies in this genre, and it completely deserved its stellar reputation. What I loved the most was the simple and minimalistic way this story was told. Indeed, most of the movie was just about Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck only together in one room talking with each other and giving us some of the best dialogues ever written for a movie. Nowadays, they would give us some boring climax with some huge action scene and, of course, the usual tedious twist at the end but, here, the whole thing remained focused and sharp from the beginning and until the end. It was like the plan they came up with, it was not so far-fetched at all and it made the whole thing even more spellbinding to behold. I also loved the fact that the main character was not fooled by this girl and at first simply walked away when he found out what she was up to, even if he felt terribly attracted to her. That's another great thing about this movie, the characters were all rather shaddy and you could never be sure what they were actually thinking. Anyway, to conclude, it is a great classic, I loved the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 8 months ago on 15 July 2017 09:44 (A review of The Maiden Heist)

I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, it did start with a dreadful first scene. Of course, I got the idea but it looked just lame and silly and, my first tought was that, after the terribly underwhelming 'Night at the Museum' franchise, is there no way nowadays that they can come up with a decent feature taking place in a museum? Fortunately, even though the damages were pretty severe, from that point, it started slowly to get better. I mean, sure, it was nothing original whatsoever but the actors involved all did a fine job, especially Christopher Walken and Morgan Freeman. I especially liked the fact that Freeman was obviously playing a gay man but there was no mention of this character's sexual orientation during the whole duration which was a very nice touch. Furthermore, I also appreciated the fact that, for once, the actual heist seemed to be realistic and doable. Of course, there were a couple of unnecessary twists and a few details that didn't really add up but most of it actually made sense. Anyway, to conclude, even though my rating might be slightly generous here, I thought it was actually a decent movie and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 8 months ago on 14 July 2017 09:11 (A review of Trouble with the Curve)

When I first heard about this movie, I had actually some high hopes. Indeed, for the first time around in almost 20 years, Clint Eastwood was finally playing the lead for another director than himself so I thought that if he would make such a come-back, it would be only for something really interesting. Eventually, this movie didnā€™t make much waves when it was released but I still wanted to check it out anyway. Well, to be honest, the whole thing turned out to be rather disappointing. I mean, sure, Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams delivered some solid performance and it was still a decent watch but, at the end of the day, it was just a rather generic and predictable drama. Above all, what bothered me the most was how boring their relationship was. Seriously, the old gimmick of the old man who has a difficult relationship with his daughter and goes on a road trip with her and patch things up in the process has been done to death by now. Furthermore, it didnā€™t make much sense. Indeed, on one hand, it seemed that they had a close relationship but, then, you discover at some point that he gave her away very young and that she spent much of her youth without any contact with her father. On top of that, even though Mickey spent all her youth, her education and her career learning to be a top lawyer, almost managed in becoming a partner in her law firm and, yet, she still came to the conclusion that she didnā€™t care at all about the law after all. Seriously , it pretty much meant that she had wasted her whole life and this conclusion was just lame. Anyway, eventually, it was still not a bad movie but itā€™s too bad that, with such fine actors involved, they couldnā€™t come up with something more interesting.
