An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 8 months ago on 21 June 2017 07:50 (A review of The Fundamentals of Caring (2016))

To be honest, this movie was not really a high priority but since it was on Netflix and since it was suggested by one of my favorite listal members, I thought I might as well check it out. Ā Well, eventually, I had a hard time to judge the damned thing. First of all, care-giving is one the greatest jobs ever, in fact, it was a job that my father had for a while, mostly because he was/is a foreigner without enough qualifications so it was basically the only thing he would be hired for. Anyway, this movie gave a decent view on this job but there was still enough stuff that did bother me though. First of all, even though Trevor was described as a supposedly impossible client, the guy seemed to be pretty relaxed, witty and with a healthy sense of humor and I'm pretty sure my dad would have been glad to have such an easy client. Furthermore, why on Earth did they have to go on a road-trip? In my opinion, it would have made much more sense to slowly build it up, making some small trips instead and going each time again further from Trevor's home. Finally, even though it was pretty sweet that they would find Ā a teenager hitchiker so that Trevor could finally hang out with a cute girl, they pushed it just too far by having her staying with them several days. I'm not saying that it was inappropriate, it's just that it wasn't realistic at all. Anyway, to conclude, Ā even though it didn't really convince me, it was still a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 8 months ago on 20 June 2017 08:34 (A review of Kaboom)

After watching ā€˜White Bird in a Blizzardā€™ (which was pretty good) and ā€˜Smiley Faceā€™ (which was pretty lame), I was quite eager to check the feature thatĀ Gregg ArakiĀ did direct between these 2 movies. Well, I really liked the way it started and the damned thing had seriously some potential.Ā Indeed, it was one of the best depictions of college life I have seen in a very long time. Furthermore, I loved Arakiā€™s approach towards sexuality which was basically that almost no one is actually totally gay or hetero. Eventually, even though the characters were really promiscuous, it was never displayed as something really depraved or depressing like it was in ā€˜The Rules of Attractionā€™ for example and this approach was really refreshing. Unfortunately, even though this material was really interesting and more than enough to deliver a strong movie, for some reasons, Gregg Araki thought it would be a good idea to add a really misguided plot about some conspiracy involving an apocalyptic cult with some paranormal gifts. Seriously, it was so weak, so half-baked, it felt as if Araki had watched ā€˜Donnie Darkoā€™ too many times and thought he could pull something similar but the end-result was just rather pathetic. Itā€™s too bad because everything else in this movie was actually really solid. Anyway, to conclude, even though this movie didnā€™t really work, I still think it is worth a look though, especially if you are interested in Gregg Arakiā€™s work.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 7 years, 8 months ago on 18 June 2017 05:55 (A review of Tragedy of a Ridiculous Man)

This movie is probably one of the most obscure movies directed by Bernardo Bertolucci but I was still eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, I have to admit that I actually had a hard time to get into this flick (in fact, I even dozed off a couple of times but maybe it was because it was so damned hot when I watched the damned thing). It doesn't mean that it was a bad movie, not at all, and it reminded me of one of my favorite movies directed by Akira Kurosawa called 'Tengoku to jigoku'. Indeed, both movies were about some elderly rich men dealing with the kidnapping of their son. However, if Kurosawa managed to make from this material one of the most realistic and gripping thrillers I ever seen, Bertolucci went for something completely different and made a drama instead. It wasn't actually a bad idea though and Ugo Tognazzi did deliver a decent performance but it was never really clear what Bertolucci tried to achieve here. Indeed, was it a political movie? Were we supposed to laugh at this supposedly ridiculous man? It was never really clear and, to be honest, I'm not sure if I really cared. Anyway, to conclude, my rating might have been too generous here but I still think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Bertolucci's work.

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 8 months ago on 16 June 2017 09:33 (A review of The Mummy)

Since this movie was so poorly received, I didn't expect much from the damned thing but Nick, my step-son, was really eager to check it out. Well, in fact, probably because I had such low expectations but, to be honest, I thought it was actually not bad at all. I mean, this mummy concept remains rather limited and I thought the makers did a decent job. Sure, it was still nothing Ā really amazing but the action scenes were quite spectacular. Still, even though the action scenes were entertaining enough, there were maybe too many of them, and, as a result, you get to see the mummy in the streets of London causing some major damages only for a few minutes which was rather disappointing. Concerning Tom Cruise, even though the guy doesn't rule the box-office anymore (no one does nowadays), he remains a decent lead actor and I liked the fact that they tried to show that his character was not really a hero, even if this aspect could have been better developed. It was also obviously a gimmick to have the mummy played by a woman this time around but Sofia Boutella was seriously charismatic, in spite of the obvious limitations of her character. Eventually, you might wonder if they will move on with their 'Dark universe' considering the lackluster enthusiasm towards Ā this movie and the scenes connecting this movie with the other characters which would be involved in this universe felt really forced and rather awkward. Anyway, even though this movie has already a lame reputation, I think it was actually worth a look but don't expect anything really amazing before watching the damned thing.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 8 months ago on 16 June 2017 07:33 (A review of Jeff, Who Lives at Home)

Iā€™m well aware that the Duplass brothers are the leaders of the mumblecore genre but I havenā€™t seen much of their work so far and since I didnā€™t care much for this movie, Iā€™m not sure if I will make much of an effort to check the rest of their work.Ā  To be honest, Iā€™m not really sure what the mumblecore genre is/was about but this movie was basically another quirky indie comedy which is something I have come to dread more and more recently. In this case, it was made even worse by the fact that the main characters were both some really pathetic losers. In fact, even the sub-plot involving Susan Sarandon didnā€™t really work. First of all, Sarandon was just miscast here. Indeed, to play a lonely woman craving for attention, they shouldnā€™t have cast one of the most charismatic woman in this age group. Furthermore, imagine if Sarandonā€™s character would have been a heterosexual man receiving some flirtatious messages from another male colleague? It would have been rather cringe-inducing and shows how misguided the whole thing was.Ā  And, yet, there were some nice scenes here and there. For example, the scene when they crashed the Porsche was just priceless. Furthermore, all the actors involved (Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Susan Sarandon) delivered some solid performances. To conclude, even though it didnā€™t really work for me, I have to admit that it was still a decent watch after all and I guess it is worth a look but only if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 15 June 2017 07:36 (A review of Made in U.S.A.)

Itā€™s only after watching about 10 movies directed by Jean-Luc Godard that I came to the conclusion that Iā€™m actually not a huge fan of his work. Indeed, many years ago, I saw and really loved ā€˜A bout de souffleā€™ which is still one of my all-time favorie movies but everything else I have seen from this director didnā€™t really impress me after all and this movie was not different, Iā€™m afraid. I mean, I do admire how the guy rejected most of the traditional rules involved in movie making, basically creating his own experimental style, but, in my opinion, the end-result was maybe artistic but also seriously random. At least, Anna Karina was once again so charismatic and it was rather funny that between ā€˜Une femme est une femmeā€™ (the first movie she made with Godard) and this feature made 5 years later, she almost completely lost her accent when speaking French. There were also some pretty neat cameos from Marianne Faithfull, another Japanese singer calledĀ KyĆ“ko Kosaka and, of course, the always awesome Jean-Pierre LĆ©aud. Anyway, to conclude, even though I had a hard time to really care for the damned thing, I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in Godardā€™s work. A good movie

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 13 June 2017 07:37 (A review of Lone Survivor)

Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick and since there was a really neat cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, it seems that this movie belongs to this sub-genre of the failed military mission based on some true events (the most famous one Ā in this genre must be ā€˜Black Hawk Downā€™).Ā  In this case, the whole thing turned out to be some kind of mix between ā€˜300ā€™ and ā€˜American Sniperā€™ and, while I did like ā€˜300ā€™, I canā€™t say I really cared much about ā€˜American Sniperā€™ Ā which must be one of the most overrated movies released recently but, all in all, this movie was not bad at all. To be honest, when they started the movie with some documentary footage of some actual SEALS training, I have to admit that I had some doubts. Indeed, it seemed rather disrespectful to compare some actual soldiers with some actors who would only pretend to be involved in some combat situations. However, it did make sense after all because, thanks to this introduction, you could understand that those guys have received some Ā of the most difficult training ever conceived in order to survive such difficult, even impossible, combat situations. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didnā€™t really blow me away, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 11 June 2017 08:56 (A review of The Three Stooges)

To be honest, I didn't expect much from this movie but since it was the last movie directed by the Farrelly brothers that I hadn't seen yet, I still wanted to check it out. Well, unfortunately, as usual with these guys, I didn't care much for the damned thing, I'm afraid. First of all, I have to admit it, even though I have heard about The Three Stooges, I have actually never seen one of their sketches but, apparently, this movie was quite respectful. Anyway, maybe this kind of humor was awesome back in those days but I'm afraid it didn't grow old very well and now it looks just annoying and not entertaining whatsoever. For the Farrelly brothers, this movie was yet another flop, even after spending about a decade on this project but the fact that all the famous actors involved at some point (Jim Carrey, Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn) dropped was not a good omen and the actors they got instead didn't really impress me but, on the other hand, they weren't not helped by this material. Anyway, to conclude, maybe the fan of The Three Stooges will love the damned thing but I thought it was rather cringe-inducing to behold and I don't think it is really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 11 June 2017 04:53 (A review of Men in Black II)

In fact, I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again. First of all, I have to admit that I always had a weak spot for the first installment but, unfortunately, this sequel turned out to be slightly disappointing. I mean, it was still fairly entertaining and it was pretty neat to see Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones back in action but I really had a hard time to care about what was going on this time around. On top of that, not only the plot was just terribly generic but they spent maybe at least half of the running time trying to fix the biggest mistake made in the previous movie. Indeed, even though 'Men In Black' clearly had some franchise potential, the makers decided for some reason, at the end, to retire K. It turned out to be a huge mistake since he was not only one of the best characters in this movie but also clearly vital for this concept. As a result, they had to find a way to bring him back but it was never really convincing or really entertaining either. Anyway, even though it turned out to be the weakest installment in this franchise, I have to admit that it was still watchable and Ā it is worth a look though, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 9 June 2017 01:13 (A review of Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb)

To be honest, I never understood the appeal of this franchise and I was really surprised that this 3rd installment was still quite successful at the box-office, especially since it was released 5 long years after its predecessors. In my case, I ended up watching the damned thing because they were offering some free DVDs at my local supermarkt if you bought 2 bottles of mayonnaise of a specific brand. Anyway, pretty much like the previous movies in this franchise, I really didn't care much about the damned thing. Indeed, they brought up basically the same formula without adding interesting at all to the mix. Seriously, the best thing they could come up with was to bring up a Neanderthal look-a-like of Ben Stiller. At least, I have to admit that it wasn't a huge step-back but it was definitely not a step-forward either. The only thing I maybe remotely enjoyed was the cameo by Hugh Jackman which was not bad. The saddest thing about this movie was the probably the fact that it gave us Robin Williams's last (live) performance and this last performance was definitely nothing memorable, especially considering his rather impressive career. To conclude, even though the whole thing was rather harmless, I still think it was a waste of time and I don't think it is worth a look.Ā
