An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 31 October 2016 11:11 (A review of Casualties of War)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and maybe I should check it out again at some point. Well, even though this movie seems to have a decent reputation, I always had some mixed feelings about the damned thing. First of all, Iā€™m afraid it came too late. Indeed,Ā  apparently, De Palma was trying to make this movie as far back as 1969 and the whole thing would have had much more impact if it would have been released at least 10 years before. And of course, it didnā€™t help that it came after so many classics about the Vietnam war such as ā€˜Platoonā€™ or ā€˜Full Metal Jacketā€™ or even ā€˜Born on the Fourth of Julyā€™ which was released the very same year.Ā  Furthermore, even though it was nice to see Michael J. Fox in something completely different, I really hard a hard time to take Marty McFly seriously in such a gritty war feature, especially since he had to face Sean Penn who was already at the top of his game at the time. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Brian De Palmaā€™s work.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 29 October 2016 06:39 (A review of Straight Outta Compton (2016))

Since this movie turned out to be quite successful at the box-office, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, first of all, I thought that the opening scenes were really strong. Indeed, it is when you get to see where those guys started that the whole thing worked out the most and, at that point, I thought that, if they could keep up this level of intensity, it could turn out to be a really strong movie, Ā much stronger than I expected. Unfortunately, as soon as they managed to release their first hit song, the whole thing turned out into a rather generic music biopic. I mean, sure, it was interesting enough but Ā it wasn't really spellbinding anymore. Still, Ā I really Ā liked how they managed to show what those guys have managed to achieve without glamorising their lifestyle. Basically, that's what they did, no more no less. Furthermore, this band pretty much launched their own music genre, the gangsta rap, a genre which was quite subversive when they started and it is still going strong 30 years later but, nowadays, there is nothing subversive anymore about the damned thing, but that's what happens with all the music genres when they go mainstream. To conclude, Ā even though it wasn't really a masterpiece, it was still a really solid music biopic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in this subject.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 29 October 2016 07:14 (A review of Doctor Strange)

I already saw this movie but since I bought a brand new TV, I thought I might as well check it out again. I remember the first time around I saw the damned thing though. Indeed, back then, Marvel did impress me again. I always thought that there would be an overdose of super-hero features and, yet, each time, they come back with some rather obscure character and deliver something really entertaining. And that's exactly what they did with this movie. First of all, visually speaking, it was by far their best movie (and, after rewatching the damned thing years later, it still is their most impressive movie in this area). Sure, it was obviously inspired by some other movies like 'Inception' but who cares? Furthemore, even though it was a classic origin story, I thought it worked well, thanks to a solid performance by Benedict Cumberbatch. Concerning the cast, all the actors involved were fine by the way. It also had to with the fact that, contrary to 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Ā or 'Captain America: Civil War', they just focused on maybe 4 or 5 characters which was just so refreshing than to have dozens of characters struggling to get involved in the plot. Finally, it was quite nice that they didn't force the connection with the MCU like they did before in some of their previous movies. Sure, there was some mentions of the MCU but it was subtle and it worked fine. Eventually, the only thing preventing this movie from becoming really awesome was the fact that, aside the origin story which was decent, the rest of the plot was actually really generic. I mean, seriously?!? Again another guy who wants to destroy the Earth? When will they finally come up with something else? To be honest, I think the only way to make this genre work on the long term is that they need to scale back. Basically, pretty much right from the start, those super-heroes had to save our planet and, since then, the writers got stuck. I mean, where do you go from here? Save the universe? and after that? Anyway, even though it wasn't flawless, it was still a really entertaining flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

P.S.: I completely forgot it but the 2nd end-credits scene did set Mordo as the villain for the next movie and, yet, they eventually went into a complete different direction with the sequel after all.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 28 October 2016 12:07 (A review of Body Double)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point.Ā Still, I remember very well when I saw the damned thing. Indeed, I had invited a friend of mine who was also a major movie buff and we ended watching up some movies literally through the whole night. We started at 21:00 in the evening and ended on 06:00 the next day so it was definitely my biggest binge-watching night ever. Anyway, at the time, he suggested we should check this movie and Iā€™m glad he did. Basically, even though Brian De Palma might have become famous with ā€˜Scarfaceā€™, it is actually with this kind of steamy thrillers that the guy basically built up his career. Apparently, the whole thing was apparently dismissed by the critics when it was released but I thought it was actually really entertaining. I mean, sure, the story was rather preposterous but I just loved the mood and I think that there was something quite spellbinding about this average guy turning into some kind of Peeping Tom. Obviously, the whole thing was remisnicent of ā€˜Rear Windowā€™ and some other movies directed by Alfred Hitchcock but it didnā€™t bother me whatsoever, in the contrary. To conclude, even though it wasnā€™t really flawless, I really have a weak spot for the damned thing and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Brian De Palmaā€™s work.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 27 October 2016 10:39 (A review of Black Rain)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick. Still, I remember quite well when I saw the damned thing. Indeed, since I always had a weak spot for Ridley Scottā€™s work, I was quite eager to check it out but I have to admit that I had some rather low expectations towards the damned thing. Ā Eventually, maybe it was because it didnā€™t expect much but even though it is probably one of the more obscure movies delivered by Scott, I actually enjoyed the damned thing. I mean, like most of the other movies coming from this director, there was absolutely no substance about it whatsoever but I thought it was very well made and it was also simply quite entertaining. Above all, I really enjoyed the mood they created and even though this movie actually didnā€™t have much else to offer, it was apparently enough for me. Anyway, it is definitely another feature I should re-watch at some point to make up my mind for good about the damned thing. To conclude, even though it is pretty much forgotten nowadays, I thought it was a decent thriller and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Ridley Scottā€™s work.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 26 October 2016 09:23 (A review of Neighbors)

Since this movie was quite successful at the box-office, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, even it turned out to be watchable, I still had a hard time to care about the damned thing. The first thing that really bothered me was the fact that, once again, they came up with a couple really struggling with parenthood. Seriously, by now, it has become a really cringe-inducing clichƩ that I have seen way too many times lately. For once, I would love to see a couple that didn't act as if their life was over from the moment they got some kids. Futhermore, I don't think Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne did have much chemistry and I don't understand why they still try to convince us that someone like Rogen would manage to end up with such a cute girl. Anyway, concerning the rest of the movie, it was filled up with the usual raunchy jokes that you get with this kind of movies, some of them were pretty funny, some others were rather lame. To conclude, I think my rating might have been rather generous here but I guess this movie might be worth a look if you really like the genre or if you think that Seth Rogen is really hilarious.

A classic

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 26 October 2016 03:19 (A review of Blow-Up (1966))

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. First of all, even though Iā€™m quite knowleadgle about movies, I have to admit that I have still some work to do with Michelangelo Antonioni since I have seen only 5 of his movies. To make things even worse, 3 of them are among his worst work (ā€˜Erosā€™, ā€˜Al di lĆ  delle nuvoleā€™, ā€˜Zabriskie Pointā€™). The weird thing is that I have actually always been interested by this director and this interest all came from this movie. Indeed, I thought it was just fascinating. Basically, it is like watching a very entertaining thriller but directed by a true artist and not your average Hollywood director. Indeed, the big difference between this masterpiece and your average thriller is that it doesnā€™t waste your time with some boring action scenes or some cheap theatrics, instead, you focus mostly on the psychological turmoil experienced by the main character and it was just spellbinding. Also, the fact that not everything was spoon-fed to the viewers was greatly appreciated. To conclude, I really loved the damned thing, it is easily one of my favorite thrillers and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Michelangelo Antonioniā€™s work. A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 26 October 2016 11:24 (A review of Before Night Falls)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Anyway, the tricky thing about this movie is that I had no idea who the hell was Reinaldo Arenas before watching the damned thing. On top of that, Arenas was a poet and this Art is probably the most difficult to bring up into a movie, in the contrary to music or painting. Still, Javier Bardem was really impressive and this movie would launch his international career resulting in an Academy Award for his part in ā€˜No Country for Old Menā€™. Concerning Julian Schnabel, who was himself a major artist in the 80ā€™s , it seems that he had decided to make only biopics focusing on other artists like this one. Eventually, even though this movie and ā€˜Basquiatā€™ were not bad at all, the guy would completely blow me away with his following directing effort, ā€˜Le scaphandre et le papillonā€™ , which is easily one of the best movies ever made. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, even though I donā€™t think it was really a masterpiece, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre. An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 26 October 2016 07:13 (A review of The Danish Girl)

I remember the first time I noticed Eddie Redmayne. It was in ā€˜Savage Graceā€™ which did turn out to be a seriously unpleasant movie but Redmayne was really good in this flick. Flashforward 7 years later and the guy has become Ā an Academy Award winner with ā€˜The Theory of Everythingā€™. Since then, the guy has become a hot commodity and, a year later, he showed up in this other high profile project.Ā  Well, even though it looked really good, even though both Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander gave some solid performances, the whole thing never really convinced me though. It probably had to with the fact that this project was rather shameless on 2 points. First of all, I didnā€™t like how it surfed on the current hype towards the transgender topic. Indeed, it is pretty easy to look back at this tale so many years later and pretend we are all tolerant regarding this matter. The other major issue with this movie is that even though it was sold as a true story, in fact, most of it was completely fictional and had nothing to do with what really happened to Einar and Gerda Wegener. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look though but the whole thing definitely had some potential to be much better than this.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 25 October 2016 11:21 (A review of Blood Work)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick so maybe I should give it a 2nd chance at some point. Still, I remember quite well when I saw it, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect but since it was directed by Clint Eastwood, I thought it would be at least a decent watch. Well, eventually, it turned out to be pretty weak, Iā€™m afraid. Basically, before producing arguably some of his best directing efforts, Clint Eastwood ended a string of disappointing flicks with one of his worst movies. I have to admit it, it wasnā€™t really awful but it was definitely average and pretty tedious to watch. Basically, it is one of the last movies he directed in which he portrayed the main character (ā€˜Gran Torinoā€™ would be the last one) and the last time he played someone involved in law enforcement. Seriously, it was like watching a grand-daddy version of Dirty Harry and it wasnā€™t a pretty sight, Iā€™m afraid. Furthermore, I really had a hard time to care about the story which was really pedestrian with the usual annoying twist at the end. To conclude, it was a really weak thriller and one of the most forgettable features delivered by this great director.
