An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 19 October 2016 06:59 (A review of Triple 9)

With such an interesting director and above all such an all-star cast, it was not surprising that this movie had a pretty good buzz before it came out. However, when it was released, it didnā€™t make much waves after all. And, indeed, Iā€™m afraid the whole thing didnā€™t really work. I mean, this star-studded cast (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Casey Affleck, Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson, Aaron Paul, Kate Winslet, Gal Gadot, Norman Reedus, Teresa Palmer, Clifton Collins Jr.) might actually have been part of the problem. Basically, very often, you got to see too many characters at the same time and no one of them got enough room to be properly developed. The victim was also the plot. Indeed, because the whole thing was so over-crowded, everything was rushed and, even if you got here and there some bits of information about the characters involved, at the end, you never get the opportunity to get close with any of them. Still, the whole thing definitely had some potential. You could feel that all the actors believed in this story and they all gave some solid performances (Kate Winslet seemed rather miscast as a Russian mob boss though) and I also liked the fact that there was no really good or bad guy in this story. To conclude, even though it sounded quite promising, it turned out to be rather half-baked but I still think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in John Hillcoatā€™s work.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 18 October 2016 10:36 (A review of Before and After)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for Barbet Schroederā€™s work and since there was a pretty cool cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. Back then, Barbet Schroeder had a decent run in the USA (I especially loved 'Reversal of Fortune') and this movie would be pretty much the most obscure one he made during this time. Well, I thought it was not bad at all. Indeed, the set-up was actually pretty good and I thought it was a solid mix between thriller and drama. It was also pretty neat to see such fine actors like Meryl Streep and Liam Neeson working together. Unfortunately, the whole thing lost some steam during the second half and, eventually, I thought the story was not bad but the material was just not strong enough. Concerning Edward Furlong, it would be one of the last interesting movies he would be involved in and the rest of his career would be filled with some really obscure movies. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, even though it was nothing really mind-blowing, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Barbet Schroederā€™s work.

A great classic

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 17 October 2016 07:35 (A review of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981))

Since I'm a huge fan of Indiana Jones, of course, I just love this flick. Even though it is not my favorite one in this franchise (that would be the 3rd installment), it is still quite awesome. Indeed, when I was a kid, I saw it so many times with my father but even twenty years later, I keep watching it from time to time and it is still so damned entertaining. Basically, with this movie, Steven Spielberg set up the golden rules for this mighty franchise and he introduced to us one of the greatest most iconic characters in motion picture history. Indeed, even though Harrison Ford was not even their first choice, Ā he completely nailed this part and managed to create a character who was even more awesome than Han Solo which was quite an achievement. By the way, the big difference with this movie and 'Star Wars' is that, when I watch again nowadays this other classic, I find it slightly childish while it is not the case at all with this great flick. Anyway, not only it is technically pretty much flawless, it is also just a plain fun movie and it is completely entertaining from the very first minute until the very last seconds. Ā To conclude, it is a great classic and it is pretty much a must see for any decent movie buff.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 17 October 2016 01:21 (A review of Brother)

I think it must be at least 10 years since I saw a movie directed by Takeshi Kitano for the last time. It is a real shame because he was definitely one of my favorite directors in the 90ā€™s. In fact, I wasnā€™t the only one who loved his work and, eventually, his international status became so important that he got the opportunity to make this movie in the USA, the first and only movie he would direct outside of Japan. I remember it very well, there was quite some hype around this movie before it was released but, eventually, it turned out to be a decent watch but not much more than that, Iā€™m afraid. I mean, it was still a solid gangster flick coming from this master but this mix between his unique style and the American way of making films was rather often really awkward. Above all, I think it would have been much more interesting if he could have worked with some really good American actors instead of the rather weak cast he ended up with . Eventually, Kitano himself didnā€™t like this experience at all and he decided to never ever make another movie outside Japan. To conclude, even though the whole thing didnā€™t live up to my expectations, I thought it was still fairly entertaining and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Takeshi Kitanoā€™s work.Ā

A very good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 17 October 2016 10:45 (A review of The Butcher Boy)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Anyway, ever since I saw ā€˜The Crying Gameā€™, I have always been a fan of Neil Jordanā€™s work but, unfortunately, it has been a while since he blew me away and Iā€™m pretty sure the last time he really impressed me was actually with this movie. It is actually a rather obscure feature but it has fortunately still managed to reach a cult status through the years. Basically, it is some kind of whimsical dark tale and even though this mix might sound impossible, I thought it worked really well and the end-result was quite unique. Indeed, not only, it felt socially accurate but you had also a really fascinating portrait of a teenage boy who is put under such a huge pressure that he slowly starts to lose his grip on reality. At the center of this tale, you had the young Eamonn Owens who gave one of the best acting debut ever and it is a real shame he didnā€™t manage to have a solid career after this movie. Coming back to our main feature, to conclude, even though it seems to be rather forgotten nowadays, I really liked the damned thing and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Neil Jordanā€™s work.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 16 October 2016 06:00 (A review of Fire at Sea)

When I heard that we would watch a movie dealing with the current immigrants crisisĀ with my filmclub, I have to admit that I was a little bit apprehensive. The tricky thing with a movie like this one is that, since it is a documentary, there is no plot to hang on to and, since there was no commentary whatsoever, you are basically left on your own to try to figure out what the director actually tried to achieve. Eventually, I was rather surprised about the little time they actually spent with those immigrants. On the other hand, it was just as well because, each time the movie was focusing on them, it was almost unbearable to watch. Instead, the focus was set on the people living and working on this island, especially a hilarious little boy. By the way, why did they spend so much time with him? I mean, he was entertaining, that's for sure, but his connection with the topic was really thin and, at some point, it felt almost like watching a documentary about the last great Italian comedian. My guess is that the makers wanted to show that, even during such horrific events, children must remain children. They have to remain innocent and oblivious about the horror around them, they have to keep playing, they have to keep pretending that they kill the whole world during their games, even if, almost every day, just a few kilometers from them, 100s of people are actually dying at sea. To conclude, even though it didn't completely work for me, it was stil a decent watch and I think it is definitely worth a look.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 15 October 2016 04:45 (A review of Snowpiercer)

Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, even though I have read a lot of comic-books when I was still living in France, I have to admit that I have never read 'Le transperceneige' which is too bad but, thanks to this movie, I'm actually quite eager to check the damned thing now. Anyway, about the movie itself, it turned out to be pretty good. Indeed, first of all, I thought it looked really neat, especially if you think that they had a budget of 40 million dollars which might seem a lot but it is nothing compared to an average US blockbuster (it was still the most expensive Korean movie ever made though). Concerning the story, I thought it was entertaining but, to be honest, I think I have seen too many movies with a similar concept to be really impressed this time. Furthermore, even though the ending was decent, I thought it was seriously predictable and, in my opinion, all the characters were rather stereotypical but, at least, all the actors involved delivered some solid performances. To conclude, even though it didn't completely win me over, I thought it was still quite entertaining and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 15 October 2016 07:49 (A review of 13 Hours)

Since it was the last movie directed by Michael Bay that I hadn't see yet, of course, I had to see it at some point. Well, eventually, even though it was rather well received (according to IMDb, it is his best movie after 'The Rock'), it was pretty much a box-office flop and it is so far his lowest grossing movie so far. Basically, that's how it works, if the guy makes a really dumb movie about some gigantic robots, it will make billions, but if he tries to make something slightly smarter, nobody will care apparently. Anyway, how was the damned thing anyway? Well, I have to admit that it was probably one of the better movies directed by Bay and I thought it was a decent watch but, to be honest, it was still nothing really great in my opinion. First of all, even though it was some interesting stunt casting to have John Krasinski to play in an action movie like this one (in fact, Bay pulled exactly the same stunt when he hired Ewan McGregor for 'The Island'), he never really convinced me. I mean, physically, he looked fine but I never had the feeling that I was watching a seasoned soldier, something he even kept repeating throughout the damned thing. Then, even though they took a realistic approach, I thought it was still rather murky. What was the GRS? Feb 17? What were they doing there? Indeed, even though it was fairly long, too long, Bay spent a lot of time trying to set up the mood between these soldiers which wasn't necessarily a bad idea but I actually had a hard time to get a real grip on this story. Finally, the conclusion with all this American patriotism was just really tedious to watch but I guess it was expected from this director. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I think it was actually a decent effort from this director and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A very good movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 14 October 2016 09:19 (A review of Blue in the Face)

To be honest, it has been ages since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. I have noticed that this movie didnā€™t get much love when it was released but I always had a weak spot for the damned thing. Basically, Wayne Wang and Paul Auster already worked together to make ā€˜Smokeā€™ which turned out to be really neat and since they apparently had a good time, they decided to make another feature in 5 days using the same location and some of the same characters using some improvisational style. Eventually, I thought it was really neat to go back to this tobacco shop, to see again Auggie and to meet some other of his friends. Furthermore, I really liked the fact that the tone was really different than ā€˜Smokeā€™ and, this time, they went for a really laid-back tone which was just really neat. Of course, there was no plot whatsoever, just a succession of small scenes involving various characters but I thought that most of these little scenes were actually quite entertaining and I especially enjoyed these monologues involving Lou Reed. To conclude, even though it is a rather obscure feature, I really liked the damned thing and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 13 October 2016 03:03 (A review of Bon Voyage)

Basically, it is one of those rather obscure French features that almost no one has seen on Listal. I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theatre when it was released and there was in France , in fact, a pretty good buzz about this movie before it came out. Indeed, after 8 long years, Jean-Paul Rappeneau was finally coming up with a new ambitious project and he had a very cool cast at his disposal. It was also the first time in 10 years since ā€˜La reine Margotā€™ that Isabelle Adjani was showing up in a big French production so the expectations were pretty high concerning this movie. Well, to be honest, even though it was a decent watch, I canā€™t say it was really mind-blowing though. Basically, it was some kind of hyperlink feature dealing with several characters going from Paris to the South of France in order to escape the Nazis during WWII. I donā€™t know, even though it was all fairly entertaining, I thought Ā it was also rather fluffy and I had a rather hard time to really care about the damned thing. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was not really a masterpiece, I thought it was still pretty good and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.Ā
