A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 10 August 2016 07:57 (A review of Behind the Candelabra)

To be honest, I wasn’t really aware about who Liberace was before watching this movie but it was supposed to be the last movie directed by Steven Soderbergh before his retirement (which lasted only 4 years after all) so I was quite eager to check it out.  Eventually, I thought it was not bad at all  and I was above all impressed by Michael Douglas. Indeed, he easily gave one of his best performances and it was really neat to see him playing something else than his usual rich oversexed and arrogant SOB. Eventually, the main problem I had is that I didn’t care much about this story. Since it was the adaptation of the book written by Scott Thorson, it made sense that it was focusing on his relationship with Liberace and that the whole thing was told from his point of view but , while Liberace was quite fascinating, Thorson was not really interesting, I’m afraid. It is like their relationship, were we supposed to be actually shocked that a rich man like Liberace would have a live-in lover like Thorson? Why?!? I mean, there are some many celebrities who have a gorgeous trophy wife who doesn’t work at all and I don’t think there is something really weird about such  relationships, at least, that’s my opinion. Another thing, even though Matt Damon was not bad here, I think he was way too  old to play the part (Indeed, Scott Thorson was only about 17 years old when he met Liberace while Matt Damon was already 42 at the time) and I think an actor half his age would have been more interesting. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was a decent watch, above all thanks to a really good Michael Douglas, and it was definitely worth a look.

A classic

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 9 August 2016 11:12 (A review of Johnny Guitar)

The main reason why I wanted to watch this flick was because it was included in the list ‘1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die’. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of such old Westerns and I believe that at least half of them could or should be removed from this otherwise really awesome list. Anyway, in this genre, I have to admit it, this movie was not bad at all and I definitely had a weak spot for the damned thing. Indeed, I thought it was especially neat to see a Western with a woman playing the lead and, even though Joan Crawford always thought that Mercedes McCambridge was stealing the show in this movie,  I was above all impressed by Crawford after all. Eventually, the biggest issue with this movie (or biggest draw, depending on who you would ask)  is that the story was rather  over-the-top and, in my case, I thought it was rather difficult to take it really seriously. To conclude, even though this movie didn’t completely work for me, I still think it is probably one of the most interesting Westerns they made at the time and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 9 August 2016 07:49 (A review of The Chase)

Not to be confused with another movie with the same title made 30 years later starring Charlie Sheen and Kristy Swanson (for some reasons, I always wanted to see this lame movie but it actually never happened).  Anyway, I really had no idea what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Marlon Brando, Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, I was really eager to check it out. First of all, it is rather surprising that a movie with such a cast is not better known and I’m afraid it wasn’t really a good omen. And, indeed, eventually, even though the actors were fine and the mood was interesting, the whole thing never really took off. In my opinion, the main issue was that even though the story was not bad, it was nothing really amazing or, at least, it wasn’t properly developed. Arthur Penn was apparently really disappointed by the end-result and he claimed that he wasn’t allowed to edit the movie himself which pretty much ruined the whole thing according to him. At least, it was pretty neat to see Robert Redford before he became a huge star. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 8 August 2016 01:11 (A review of The Crossing Guard)

After 10 long years, Sean Penn will finally make his come-back as a director with ‘The Last Face’. I have noticed that even though Sean Penn has always been one of the most heralded actors of his generation, he never really got much credit for his work as a director and I think it’s too bad. Anyway, this movie was his 2nd directing effort and I thought it was a really solid drama. Indeed, the mood was really neat and Jack Nicholson was once again pretty impressive here and  many argued, Sean Penn himself, that he gave one of his best performances. Eventually, I think the whole thing was slightly too dark and melodramatic to be completely amazing but most of it was still fine. 6 years later, Sean Penn would come up with a new directing effort, ‘The Pledge’, also starring Jack Nicholson in the lead, but I thought it was in fact too similar to this movie (on the other hand, Roger Ebert thought  it was amazing so I should probably give it a 2nd chance at some point). To conclude, even thought it was maybe not a masterpiece, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Sean Penn’s work.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 8 August 2016 10:18 (A review of Cobb)

If I recall it correctly it correctly, I actually saw this movie with a buddy of mine and the weird thing was that, at the time, I had actually never heard of Ty Cobb before. I mean, we don’t play baseball in France and even though I have heard about a couple of baseball players (Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson,…) , I don’t know much about their achievement and, in this case, I knew really nothing about the guy but I think it turned out to be a blessing after all. Indeed, a common issue with many biopics is that since we are already so familiar about the concerned artist/sportsman/celebrity, nothing really surprising or interesting really happen throughout the whole thing. Well, in this case, I was like a blank page and I was really intrigued by this guy who was apparently one of the best baseball players that ever lived. Apparently, this movie has been criticized as being vastly inaccurate so it might be interesting to see in the future another movie more faithful to what might have actually happened. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 7 August 2016 06:03 (A review of Sex Tape)

Since this movie had a rather lame reputation, I wasn't expecting much but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Honestly, I do think that the whole thing actually had some potential, unfortunately, pretty much nothing did work, I'm afraid. The first thing that irritated me was this gimmick to have all the parents hating to have their children. Indeed, this gimmick is always rather cringe-inducing, especially when you think that the generation of my grandparents or before used to have often above 5 kids and, yet, in those movies,  when they have only have 2 of them, the parents seem to go through some hell. Then, the other thing that annoys me is that, ever since I had some kids, I always find it too easy to spot actors trying to play some parents when they don't have any kids in real life and this movie was not an exception. The next problem was that even though Jason Seger was a perfect choice,  on the other hand, Cameron Diaz was rather poorly cast. I mean,  does anyone believe that any guy would have some trouble to have sex with their wife, even 15 years later,  if she would look anything like Cameron Diaz? Even if she tried her best, it is obvious that the whole thing would have worked better with someone who looked 'normal' or at least not like a previous top-model, like Tina Fey  for example. Those were only the issues occurring during the first 10 minutes but the rest of the movie was not much better, I'm afraid. To conclude,  it was another comedy with a decent concept which turned out to be really poorly developed and I don't think the whole thing is really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 7 August 2016 05:55 (A review of Labor Day)

Even though this movie didn't get much love when it was released, a movie directed by Jason Reitman and starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin definitely sounded interesting so I was still eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, it wasn't really good, I'm afraid. I guess, the main issue I had was that, even though it looked fine and the actors gave some decent performances, the story never really worked in my opinion. Indeed, somehow, they tried to mix some drama, some romance and a dash of thriller and the end-result was some kind of weak version of 'A Perfect World'. This movie also reminded me somehow of 'The Bridges of Madison County', another classic directed by Clint Eastwood. Anyway, the issue with this movie was probably that I never really believed in this set-up. I mean, they gave us probably the least believable meet cute ever and, fast, much too fast, they fell in love and even this process was messed up. Indeed, they gave us Brolin fixing the house, playing catch and, of course, baking some pie because, obviously, that's why you would fall in love for someone. I mean, coming back to the pie, this one was so amazing that the little boy grew up to look like Tobey Maguire and would eventually open his own pie baking shop. That was apparently some seriously  mighty pie then. To conclude, even though it wasn't awful, it was still pretty weak, in fact the weakest movie directed by Jason Reitman so far, but I guess it is worth a look, at least, for the fine actors involved.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 6 August 2016 06:15 (A review of Assassins)

In fact, I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well give it a 2nd chance. First of all, the whole thing actually definitely had some potential and it could have been a really neat action flick. Indeed, I always had a weak spot for movies about a hitman so to have 2 hitmen (one was basically a legend and the other one was a huge fan of this legend) was really good and it is a real pity that the end-result was so underwhelming. Indeed, Sylvester Stallone was not bad but his character should have been much colder and it was pretty lame that the guy would go soft and fall in love like this with his target. Then, I did like at first Antonio Banderas but he was acting so over-the-top that his character got on my nerves after a while. Eventually, the biggest problem was surprisingly with Julianne Moore. Indeed, while watching this movie, it was hard to believe that she would become a few years later one of the best actresses around. On the other hand, maybe we shouldn't blame her but blame instead her character who was probably one of the most unbelievable nerd-hackers I have ever seen. Seriously, the whole scene during which she was supposed to exchange a disk for some money was just seriously ridiculous. Anyway, to conclude,  the whole concept was really nice but it was really poorly developed and it turned out to be a rather weak action flick after all.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 5 August 2016 10:24 (A review of Suicide Squad)

Since this movie received some poor reviews (which I didn't read before watching this flick), I thought it might turn out to be another underwhelming super-hero flick but I still wanted to check it out. Eventually, it turned out to be pretty cool and it seems that there is still some hope for the DCCU, in spite of what many seem to think. Indeed, basically, it was some kind of rather messed-up version of the Avengers running on acids. I mean, I have to admit it, it wasn't a home-run like 'Deadpool' was but most of it still worked. Indeed, they managed to give all these characters enough time and space to be fairly well developed and they were all pretty awesome. In fact, even though everybody was predicting that Margot Robbie would completely steal the show, I thought she was all right but I don't think she really stood out so much from the group but that wasn't an issue. Eventually, the only issue was that the story was not really strong. Indeed, it was all rather generic and predictable. By now, all these super-hero flicks have pretty much the same plot and in fact this concept of having an ancient being planning to destroy humankind had even been already done the very same year in 'X-Men: Apocalypse'. Also, the whole sequence about saving Viola Davis barely worked and should have been removed somehow. At least, they got the tone right and those bad guys remain pretty bad until the very end which was a relief. Anyway, to conclude, I thought it was a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 5 August 2016 11:53 (A review of City by the Sea)

As you may have noticed, I’m a very obsessive movie watcher and one of my very first obsessions was/is Robert De Niro. I just love this actor and I have been watching many of this movies during the last 20 years (I have seen 72 of them so far). However, since the beginning of 2000's, he has made a lot of movies but most of them were of a very dubious quality so I’m not as fanatic as I used to be about his work but I still watch some of them from time to time. The funny thing with this movie is, that, if you would compare it to what De Niro made in the past, it was actually rather weak but, if you would compare it to to the recent garbage starring Robert De Niro,  it was actually not bad at all. It was especially pretty neat to see a young James Franco who was personally chosen by De Niro. Apparently, Michael Caton-Jones was actually so unhappy with the final result though that he even said that working on this film was the worst period of his career (I wonder if he made this statement before or after working on ‘Basic Instinct 2’). Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing really amazing, I thought it was still a decent watch and I think it is actually worth a look, especially if you are interested in De Niro’s work.
