An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 9 months ago on 19 September 2016 09:23 (A review of Desperado)

Even though Robert Rodriguez definitely got noticed thanks to his directing debut 'El Mariachi', it is actually really with this sequel/remake that he eventually became really noticed by the mainstream audience. I remember it very well, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Basically, even though the budget was still rather modest (approximately $7 million), it was still 1000 times the amount of money Rodriguez spent to make his previous directing effort. Well, to be honest, even though it was a solid action flick, I don’t think the plot was anything really original or amazing. Still, in spite of its flaws, it was a very well made and entertaining action movie. On top of that, not only it introduced Robert Rodriguez, it also helped Antonio Banderas and the always lovely Salma Hayek to breakthrough in the USA so this movie was a very important milestone for all the players involved. Almost 10 years later, they would eventually come up with another sequel which would be also quite watchable as well. To conclude, even though it might not be a masterpiece, it is still pretty much one of the best movies delivered by Robert Rodriguez and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 9 months ago on 18 September 2016 04:38 (A review of Things to Come)

For the 2nd time around this year, with my filmclub, we went to see another movie starring Isabelle Huppert who is slowly becoming one of our favorite actresses. Concerning the movie itself, it was basically about a very rational woman who had to face some really emotional events Ā (the loss of her job, the death of her mother and the separation with her husband). However, even if this process was quite interesting, thanks above all to a really solid performance from Huppert, I never really felt swept away by the whole thing. It probably had to do with the fact that, as a French boy, I more or less grew up in such an environment which might seem incredibly enlightning but, from my own experience, this way of life can also be eventually rather cold and frustrating. It is also a way that you might describe this movie. On one hand, this woman discovers herself again, finding some new challenges and pleasures but, on the other hand, she remains also the same woman, with the very same qualities and shortcomings. With too much rationality, how do you remain passionate? Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn't really blow me away, I thought it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you're interested in French movies.

Posted : 8 years, 9 months ago on 17 September 2016 04:09 (A review of Ted 2)

Even though I really loved 'Ted', I thought that 'A Million Ways to Die in the West' turned out to be terribly disappointing, even if it actually had some potential. A year later, Seth MacFarlane tried to recover the damage done by releasing a sequel for his successful directing debut which didn't really sound like a bad idea but, unfortunately, the whole thing was again rather underwhelming, I'm afraid. I mean, the concept of having Ted fighting for his rights was actually not a bad idea but it never really worked. As Ted himself would say, 'that's some deep shit, dude' and I'm afraid the makers never really managed to handle this material properly. I mean, basically, they tried to tackle the actual meaning of life and what make us human but how are you going to achieve this with a teddy bear who swears, drinks and does drugs all the time? As a result, the whole thing felt like watching a rather dumb movie who tries to deal with some really deep subject but it was never really funny or entertaining. To conclude, even though it was slightly better than 'A Million Ways to Die in the West', it was still pretty weak and I don't think it is really worth a look, even if you really enjoyed the previous installment.Ā

A very good movie

Posted : 8 years, 9 months ago on 16 September 2016 08:40 (A review of The Spanish Apartment)

Between 2000 and 2001, I spent a year in Cambridge as an exchange student with the Erasmus program. Back then, I spent a year in the local YMCA living with some other students from all over Europe and I had a real blast. The very next year, I found out that CƩdric Klapish was coming up with a movie about a French guy spending a year as an Erasmus student in Barcelona so, of course, I really had to see the damned thing and I really loved it. Indeed, the first half was just pitch-perfect. Seriously, everything described by the main character was exactly like I remembered it and it brought back some really sweet memories. I especially liked the fact that all the characters were played by some actors coming from the same country as their character which was something actually rather unique. I have to admit it, the whole thing was often pretty random but it made sense. The only thing that didn't really work in my opinion was his affair with this French married woman. I mean, Judith GodrƩche was quite gorgeous but this whole sub-plot actually belonged to a different movie. In fact, it did make sense that he cheated on his girlfriend (indeed, almost all the people who had a girlfriend or a boyfriend at home ended up cheating on them at some point or another when I was an exchange student in England) but it would have worked better if he did it with some local girl or some other exchange student. Anyway, even though it wasn't really flawless, I really loved the damned thing and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you went through some similar experience like I did.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 9 months ago on 16 September 2016 08:24 (A review of Demolition Man)

By now, I must have seen most of the action flicks starring Sylvester Stallone and, to be honest, I think that most of them are pretty weak and boring but I have to admit that they are a few exceptions and this movie is definitely one of them. Indeed, I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released and, since then, it has always been one of my guilty pleasures. I mean, sure, the whole concept was rather preposterous but it was also a lot of fun. In fact, I’m pretty sure it was in fact the only SF starringĀ StalloneĀ which managed to be actually really entertaining. Anyway, what I enjoyed the most with thisĀ movie is that there was a really nice mix between some really solid action scenes and some funny scenes. Indeed, the whole thing was not only about the massive fight between Stallone and Snipes but also about how they get used to this futuristic world. To introduce Stallone’s character to this new time, they gave him also a really neat sidekick with Sandra Bullock in a star-making performance (it is actually interesting that she actually got her breakthrough with 2 action flicks, this one and ā€˜Speed’ released a year later). To conclude, even though it might not be a masterpiece, it is is probably one of my favorite action flicks and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 9 months ago on 15 September 2016 09:06 (A review of Charlie's Angels)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. Back then when it was released, even if it did turn out to be fairly successful at the box-office, this movie still got a rather lame reputation. Even myself, I had some mixed feelings about the damned thing. Basically, on one hand, it was a rather moronic action flick but, on the other hand, I have seen much worse and the over-the-top approach actually had some potential. Indeed, the TV-show was nothing really serious to start with so to have some fun with this concept was not a bad idea. Well, after all these years, I don't think the damned thing was so bad after all. Indeed, the three girls (Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu) looked fine and they were quite fun to behold. They could have dialed down the goofy humor but I was surprised that it actually worked most of the time. As a result, you get to see Bill Murray who was really fun and the guy was just a perfect choice to play John Bosley. Unfortunately, even though Murray was probably the best thing in this movie, he had apparently a major argument with Lucy Liu during the making of this movie so he didn’t show up for the sequel. It was also fun to be remembered that, after 'The Matrix' was released, so many action flicks like this one copied its way of shooting fighting scenes with some really dubious results. In general, the movie didn't look great visually speaking already when it was released but it was obviously never really the point. Anyway, to conclude, I have to admit that it wasn’t as awful as it thought it was, especially after watching Elizabeth Banks's even more abysmal version, and I think it is actually worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 9 months ago on 14 September 2016 12:31 (A review of Contact)

To be honest, I always had some mixed about this movie and it is definitely one I really need to re-watch at some point. Indeed, the first time I watched it, I thought it was not bad but it didn’t really convince me either. However, ever since I watched the damned thing, I can’t really stop thinking about it from time to time so I really need to give it a 2nd shot. Anyway, Jodie Foster was pretty good, as usual, and Robert Zemeckis definitely delivered some decent directing but the main issue, at least from what I remember, is that the whole thing was just a really long and slow progression. Basically, the whole thing had a running time of about 150 mins (so far the longest movie directed by Robert Zemeckis) and it took forever before Jodie Foster finally went on her journey which was, I must admit it, pretty impressive. So, while I was impressed by the conclusion, I never understood why it took so long to get there. Still, I can’t shake the idea that I missed the point the first time I watched it (the fact that Roger Ebert really loved this movie must be another reason) and I will definitely check this one once again when I get the opportunity.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 9 months ago on 14 September 2016 11:14 (A review of Cruel Intentions)

Right now, I’m actually reading ā€˜Les liaisons dangereuses’ in the original French language, it is a really great book and it reminds me that, maybe, I should give this modern adaptation a 2nd chance at some to point.Ā Ā To be honest, I have always been amazed by how high rated the whole thing was and I wasn’t never reallyĀ impressed by the damned thing. I don’t know, it seems to me that the whole thing was mostly loved by its target audience, the teenagers, who basically never read the book or saw the amazing version directed by Stephen Frears. Basically, it is and remains a fascinating story with some really nicely messed-up characters but, in this case, it is just a rather weak adaptation. I mean, at least, if they have pushed the eroticism as far as possible, then it could have been something slightly more interesting but, instead you get a rather vapid feature made to tease the teenagers but, eventually, it was all rather harmless. It’s like this kiss involving Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair, it seems that it is what everybody remembers about this movie and while I have to admit it, it was pretty neat, nothing else really steamy happens during the whole thing. At least, there was a pretty cool cast involving a lot of up-and-coming actors (Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair, Joshua Jackson, Tara Reid). Anyway, to conclude, I think the damned thing is seriously overrated and I don’t think it is really worth a look

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 9 months ago on 14 September 2016 07:58 (A review of Escape Plan)

To be honest, I thought it was rather difficult to judge this movie. Basically, if those guys would have made this movie 20 or 30 years ago, it would have been a huge hit but, now, it seems to be too late and this movie was indeed a box-office flop (at least, in the US, in the rest of the world, it was actually fairly successful). Obviously, they seem a little bit too old to play in such action movies (they are both 70 years old by now) . At least, Stallone was still convincing but I wasn’t so sure about Schwarzenegger. Indeed, Stallone never stopped working while Schwarzenegger took a 7 years break to be Governor of California and it had an impact on him physically. In this movie, he was mostly filmed in close-ups and I wonder if he really did his stunts himself. Anyway, it was still pretty cool to see them together playing some kind of bad-ass duo. Concerning the story itself, half of it was pretty good and half of it was rather lame. For example, the escaping stuff was actually pretty neat, especially the first attempt which felt actually quite realistic. However, the whole conspiracy thing felt rather far-fetched and I think it would have worked better with a normal prison instead of this high-tech stuff which wasn’t really satisfying after all. On a positive note, I thought Jim Caviezel was a pretty cool villain and the guy delivered a solid performance. Anyway, all in all, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 8 years, 9 months ago on 13 September 2016 09:04 (A review of Die Another Day)

Right now, it seems that the Bond franchise is in limbo after 2 massive box-office success and, at this point, it is not really clear if Daniel Craig will come back or be replaced. Eventually, in the future, this period would probably be considered as the Golden Age of this franchise. Unfortunately, as a result, we tend to look down on the installments involving Pierce Brosnan. I mean, sure, Brosnan was maybe not as good as Daniel Craig and Sean Connery but we seem to forget that it is with him that the franchise became healthy again. Of course, it doesn’t help that this 4th and last installment was actually pretty weak. In fact, like the other installments starring Brosnan, the whole thing was actually quite successful and it was even the highest-grossing James Bond film at the time but, unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the weakest installment in this franchise. I mean, some elements were pretty cool, for example, it starred 2 of the very best Bond-girls with Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike and it seemed to be a great idea to have the bad guy coming from South Korea. Unfortunately, nothing else really worked, I’m afraid. Indeed, the plot was boring and moronic, on top of that, they tried too squeeze way to many winks to the franchise legacy because it was an anniversary installment (indeed, Ā ā€˜Dr. No’ was released 40 years before). To conclude, it was a rather lazy and tedious Bond feature and I don’t think it is really worth a look, unless you are a die-hard fan of this franchise. Ā
