An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 31 July 2016 06:52 (A review of Hotel Transylvania 2)

To be honest, yesterday, I was actually planning to finally watch 'Whiplash' since it was soon to be removed from HBO but my daughter apparently wanted to watch something together so we ended up watching this movie instead. We had already watched the first installment last year and she was really eager to see this follow-up but I can't say I really shared her excitement. I mean, pretty much like its predecessor, I thought it turned out to be rather boring and I never cared about the characters and what they were going through. At least, Dennis was cute and some of the characters had some decent moments but most of the jokes were rather weak. Furthermore, like any other Sandler production, there was some kind of lesson to be learned, in this case, no matter what your children turn out to be, you should always love them which was rather shallow but I thought this whole idea was strongly diminished by the fact that, at the end, Dennis still became a vampire. Seriously, what was the point of the whole thing then? At least, I'll give you that, it wasn't worse than the previous movie but it wasn't better either. Anyway, to conclude, I really donā€™t care much for this franchise and I don't think this sequel is really worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 30 July 2016 05:13 (A review of Here Comes the Boom)

Obviously, I didn't expect much from this flick since I had some time left this Saturday afternoon, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be another rather lame Sandler production, that's for sure. I mean, right from the start, the whole thing was just so misguided. Basically, it is about a teacher who barely teach at all during the whole movie, who barely gave any attention to his students before the story took place but only because he becomes a MMA fighter, for a good cause, I'll give you that, he becomes in the process an inspiration for his students. I mean, sure, you might argue that since it was a comedy, I shouldn't take it too seriously but you have to admit that the whole thing was rather messed up. On top of that, I'm not sure if it was actually some good publicity for UFC as you might make the conclusion that, even if you lose and get beat up pretty bad, you will still get 10000 dollars and some people might get the idea that it is actually a rather easy way to win some cash. Eventually, I felt mostly sorry for Salma Hayek who is still one of the most beautiful women on the planet but she was completely wasted here with a boring and poorly developed character. To conclude, Ā I have seen worse but it was still pretty weak and I don't think it is really worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 30 July 2016 07:17 (A review of A Most Wanted Man)

Ever since I saw 'Control', I got intrigued by Anton Corbijn's work so I was really eager to check this 3rd directing effort. Even though it was another spy feature like 'The American' was, it was something much more ambitious, easily his most ambitious movie so far but I'm afraid it only partially succeeded. Like most John Le CarrĆ©'s spy thrillers, I really enjoyed the realistic approach and the bleak mood, however, I thought it was sometimes seriously murky, even more than in 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'. Above all, I had a hard time to understand the motivations of most of the characters. For example, why didĀ Issa Karpov come to Hamburg? Apparently, to get his inheritance through a rather cumbersome process but, when he finally manages to get his hands on it, he says he doesn't want it anymore. In my opinion, it was the most difficult character to understand. Indeed, he was also supposed to be a dangerous jihadist, the main reason why they were following him, but there wasn't one single moment in the whole movie that he seemed to be a threat to anyone. And then why did everyone keep betraying each other? I mean, at some point, you get to see Gunther giving a speech to Jamal but it was hardly convincing and, for the other characters, especially Annabel Richter, you didn't get any explanation at all. Finally, the last thing that bothered me was the fact, even though the action was set in Germany, with mostly some German characters, the main characters were played by some American actors and everybody spoke in English with some distracting supposedly German accents. To conclude, I think I might have been slightly generous with my rating here but, in spite of its flaws, I really liked the mood and I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 29 July 2016 08:18 (A review of The Damned)

To be honest, it has been a while since I saw this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Basically, I bumped into this movie in a DVD shop, if I recall it correctly, and since I have always been a fan of Luchino Viscontiā€™s work, I thought I might as well check it out. Indeed, I always thought that there was something fascinating in his work, more than with any other Italian director, even Fellini. This movie was apparently acclaimed when it was released but, to be honest, I had actually a hard time to connect with the damned thing. Basically, it is a very long bleak tale about a rather decadent German family in the 30ā€™s and I'm afraid it was not really fun to spend so much time with such despicable characters. I mean, sure, Iā€™m well aware that it was never supposed to be ā€˜funā€™ but I just didnā€™t care much for these characters and what they were going through. I donā€™t know, to be honest, sometimes, it felt like watching ā€˜Caligulaā€™ but, this time, dealing with some Germans instead of some Romans. I know, it might sound weird to compare an acclaimed movie like this one to some notorious garbage like ā€˜Caligulaā€™ and thatā€™s why I should probably re-watch it at some point. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didnā€™t really connect with the damned thing, it is still definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Luchino Viscontiā€™s work.Ā

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since it was available on HBO, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, as usual with Adam Sandler, it turned out to be pretty lame, I'm afraid. I mean, to make a comedy about vintage gaming, after above all the success of 'Wreck-It Ralp', was in fact a decent idea but it just didn't work (it still managed to make $240m worldwide gross though). What went wrong here? First of all, the whole concept of having some hardcore gamers saving the world was just weak and not really funny whatsoever. I mean, even the game angle was poorly developed. Indeed, at least in 'Wreck-It Ralp' or even 'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World', they kept mentioning tons of different games but, here, they mostly focused on 3 or 4 games that were so old that even me, who used to be a real hardcore gamer, didn't care for them. At least, they had Pac-Man but for some reasons he was used as a villain. Why on Earth? It didn't even make sense, even for the main character. At least, Peter Dinklage seemed to have some fun and his character was pretty neat but everything else seriously bored me. To conclude, it was another failure from Sandler and I don't think it is really worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 28 July 2016 09:25 (A review of The Blackout (1997))

Back in the 90's, I was a huge fan of Abel Ferrara, especially after watching ā€˜Bad Lieutenantā€™ which remains one of the best movies ever made in my opinion and I believe that most of his work he released at the time was really interesting. As a result, I was really eager to check this flick even if it didnā€™t get much love when it was released. Unfortunately, even though I believe that this movie had the potential to be another mesmerizing dark and steamy thriller from Ferrara, Iā€™m afraid it was a failure and, from then on, it seemed that the guy pretty much lost his touch. Ā Indeed, Ferrara had a very intriguing cast, especially with Claudia Schiffer and BĆ©atrice Dalle (Dalle would be actually caught with cocaĆÆne during the shooting and then banned to come back in the US, pretty much ruining her potential international career) and the mood was interesting but the plot was seriously murky and, unfortunately, it would become a trademark in most of the movies directed by Ferrara afterwards. To conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch though and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in this director.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 27 July 2016 10:35 (A review of The Harder They Come)

Since Iā€™m a huge Reggae fan, of course, I had to watch this movie at some point. Eventually, 40 years later, it might look pretty cheap and since it was pretty much the very first movie of this kind ever produced in Jamaica, the directing and acting were sometimes rather weak due to some lack of experience. Still, it was a huge box-office hit when it was released in Jamaica. Indeed, it was focusing on a black guy, speaking with the heavy Jamaican accent, going through some realistic hardship so it was highly recognizable for the local audience. You might argue that the plot was rather straightforward but the bleak and realistic approach was really neat. Furthermore, as any decent Reggae fan, I really loved the soundtrack with the major classic title song done by Jimmy Cliff himself,Ā  who also played the main character in this movie. Unfortunately, even though Perry Henzell was quite eager to direct some other Jamaican productions after this one, he always struggled to find some financing and only managed to make one other directing effort. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was maybe not entirely successful, this movie is still a fine cult-classic and it is definitely worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 27 July 2016 08:03 (A review of The Last Battle)

By now, I have seen most of the movies directed by Luc Besson and, even though he was probably regarded in the 80ā€™s-90ā€™s as the most promising French director, I think his career turned out to be rather underwhelming. I mean, sure, he was made some decent films but his last major critical hit was more than 20 years ago with ā€˜LĆ©onā€™ (which, I believe, is one of the most overrated movies ever made). Even so, I was still eager to check his directing debut. Ā Basically, it was a rather typical post-apocalyptic science-fiction feature like ā€˜Mad Maxā€™ Ā but it was visually pretty neat, in spite of a rather limited budget, and I especially enjoyed the fact that there was almost no dialogue at all during the whole thing. Besson would work also for the first time with Eric Serra on this movie and, as usual, Serra delivered a very atmospheric soundtrack.Ā  It would be also the first time that Besson would work with Jean Reno who would play some major roles in his next 4 movies. To conclude, even though it was nothing really groundbreaking, I thought it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Luc Bessonā€™s work.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 26 July 2016 08:40 (A review of Dangerous Game)

I have noticed this movie didnā€™t get much love when it was released but I thought it was actually pretty good. Basically, back in the 90's, I was a huge fan of Abel Ferrara, especially after watching ā€˜Bad Lieutenantā€™ which remains one of the best movies ever made in my opinion and I believe that most of his work he released at the time was really interesting. Ferrara made this movie a year after ā€˜Bad Lieutenantā€™ and, apparently, it was barely seen when it was released and it was considered as a massive critical and commercial flop. Apparently, what happened to this movie was what you could call the ā€˜Madonnaā€™ effect. Indeed, ever since she launched her acting career in the 80ā€™s, she got some rather terrible reviews but she really hit bottom with ā€˜Body of Evidenceā€™. Well, this movie was released a few months later but people, even Madonna herself, still didnā€™t forget how awful her previous movie was when, in fact, she gave actually a solid performance here. Against her, you had Harvey Keitel who was probably the best actor working with Ferrara and they were both quite spellbinding to behold. To conclude, even though it was maybe not completely successful, I thought it was another interesting dark tale from this director and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Abel Ferraraā€™s work.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 25 July 2016 07:13 (A review of This Means War)

Not so long ago, I saw '3 Days to Kill' and since this movie was the last one directed by McG that I hadn't watch so far, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even if it had slightly more potential than '3 Days to Kill', it wasn't really much better, I'm afraid. I mean, in fact, there was barely anything that really did work with this movie. First of all, it was really hard to believe that a girl like Reese Witherspoon would need a dating site to find a guy. Then, I felt really sorry for Tom Hardy, one of the most talented actors of his generation, who seemed completely lost here (he himself admitted that he really regretted taking part in this movie). At least, Chris Pine did manage to find the right tone but it was certainly not enough to save this movie. I mean, it was more messed up than entertaining to see this girl dating 2 guys at the same time. And what about the fact that these 2 spies had decided to put all their agency's resources to actually spy on this girl? On top of that, to make things worse, she eventually chose the least worthy of them at the end. Anyway, to conclude, it was a rather misguided premise which was on top of that poorly executed so I don't think it is really worth a look at all.
