A very good movie
Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 29 December 2012 10:37 (A review of Becket)Honestly, I have never heard of this movie before but since I'm a huge fan of Peter O'Toole, I still wanted to check it out. On the other hand, I can't say I knew much Richard Burton and I was more acquainted with his tumultuous relationship with Elizabeth Taylor than his work. Anyway, these two guys were just amazing in this movie. Indeed, they provided such great performances, it was just quite impressive. This movie was actually an adaptation of a play written by a French dude called Jean Anouilh who wrote many plays such as 'Antigone'. Apparently, Anouilh didn't care much about historical accuracy but he sure was able to write some fascinating characters. Indeed, the king and his best 'friend' were some of the most spellbinding fictional creatures I have ever encountered. I mean, they were smart, ambitious, arrogant, fun, reprehensible, friends, enemies and many other things. This story was also filled with some homo-erotic tones, just to add even more ambiguity to the whole thing. It is quite remarkable that even though the movie lasts about 150 minutes and even though you basically just have those two men talking to each other, it was really spellbinding to watch. To conclude, I really loved this movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 29 December 2012 09:38 (A review of Never Back Down)I didn't expect much from this movie and, indeed, it was nothing really amazing. At first, it seemed that it was going to be some kind of juvenile Fight Club but, no, after introducing this concept (not really interesting if you ask me), they just dropped it within 5 minutes without coming back to it at any moment. Why would they show this to us if they decide to go towards a completely different direction?!? Anyway, after that, the rest of the movie was just a MMA version of The Karate Kid. Indeed, they faithfully followed the genre with the mentor, the douchebag, the love interest (who, of course, used to date the douchebag), of course the training montage with some inspirational music and the final showdown. I must admit it, it was actually well made but so unoriginal, so predictable, I really had a hard time to care about the whole thing. At the end, there was even this tournament, when the two guys were supposed to fight it off in the final but, no, instead they end up fighting on the parking lot... The makers probably thought it was a neat way to go against expectations but it wasn't. I mean, why should we bother at all with this tournament if they eventually will fight on some random parking lot?!? The other thing that annoyed me was the usual message you get in those movies that the main character shouldn't fight... I always find it some hypocritical BS... I mean, if you watch this kind of movies, of course you want to see them fight, of course you want to see them kick some ass and because it's a movie, nobody is actually getting hurt, so in this case, violence is fine as it is pure and simply entertaining so just cut the crap... To end on a positive note, Djimon Hounsou was dependable as usual and Cam Gigandet had a nice charisma but both characters were reduced to some disappointing stereotypes. To conclude, if you love this genre, you will probably like this movie but I thought it was pretty average and it is eventually not really worth a look.

Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 28 December 2012 11:08 (A review of The Lady Vanishes)Since I'm a huge fan of Alfred Hitchcock, of course, I was really eager to check this out. At first, I was wondering where the whole thing was getting to (I never read beforehand what a movie is about) and, during the first scenes, I thought it would be some kind of farce. Eventually, I understood that the hotel sequence was actually there only to establish all those peculiar characters. Indeed, the real action was to take place later on, on the train. There, it became one of those spellbinding thrillers that only Hitchcock could make back then more than 70 years ago. It was just fascinating to see this woman getting back to her seat and asking where was this old lady who simply vanished. I mean, this has been copied so many times through the years, it was just pretty neat to see Hitchcock's own version. Another fascinating aspect was the total lack of music. Indeed, music is usually a key element in your typical thriller and it constantly underlines the action, telling when you should pay attention, when you should be scared and it is usually quite effective but also really intrusive. Here, since there is no music queue, you are left alone wondering which emotions you should feel and I thought it was a great approach. To conclude, even though it might not be one of his many masterpieces, it still is a very good thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 28 December 2012 10:45 (A review of Season of the Witch)For many years, I have been defending Nicolas Cage, arguing that he was actually a very good actor. However, every movie coming out starring this guy is a new blow to his career and he makes it really hard to take his side... Only in 2011, he has made 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance', 'Trespass, 'Seeking Justice', 'Drive Angry' and this movie. So far, I have seen only this movie and 'Ghost Rider' and both are now on my top 10 worst movies of 2011 and I'm not really optimistic about the other three... Anyway, this time, Cage went for a medieval tale and the end-result was just pretty pathetic. Indeed, the story was just really pedestrian, the acting was not convincing and the special effects looked pretty cheap. Another laughable element were the dialogues. Indeed, half of them were modern and the other half was more faithful to the time period... At least, we have to give Nicolas Cage some credit for trying something else but I wish he paid more attention about the projects he took (Only in 2013, he might release no less than 8 movies so it doesn't sound really promising...). To conclude, it was just really weak movie and it is not really worth a look.

Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 28 December 2012 04:29 (A review of Lost Highway (1997))This movie had a huge impact concerning my relationship with this director. Indeed, before, David Lynch used to be one of my favorite directors and I basically worshiped the guy. However, this movie changed everything. Indeed, I saw this movie in the theater when it was released and I had some huge expectations but, unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the most disappointing movies I have ever seen. I mean, it was not bad, in the contrary, the first half was just amazing, I was completely wrapped up in this spellbinding world and this 1st half was possibly the best thriller I had ever seen. But suddenly, the thunder struck and I landed into a completely different movie. My first reaction was 'WTF!?!'. I was honestly never able to enjoy the 2nd half of this movie and I have seen this movie at least 3 times already. Seriously, I always have a blast when I read or hear the wild 'theories' the fans built up about this flick... I don't want to be mean but I think it is rather pathetic. In my opinion, there is absolutely no meaning in this succession of weird nonsensical scenes. It is just being weird for the sake of being weird and let's pretend it is actually Art. This flick made me so pissed off because it actually had so much potential. Indeed, the directing was amazing, it looked really gorgeous and the cast gave some really solid performances (Bill Pullman, Patricia Arquette, Robert Blake, Balthazar Getty, Gary Busey, Giovanni Ribisi, Richard Pryor, Jack Nance, Marilyn Manson). Like I said before, it could have been the best thriller ever made but, at the end, it is just a decent weird mind-f*ck, not much more, I'm afraid. To conclude, even though it is full of garbage, there is still too much greatness in this movie so it is still worth a look, especially if you are interested in David Lynch's work.

Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 28 December 2012 01:57 (A review of Chicken Little)I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, after this rewatch, to be honest, not only this movie turned out to be even more boring that I expected but I didnât remember that the damned thing was also so ugly. Basically, for many decades, Disney had been pretty much untouchable in the animation genre. However, it has become a total different ball game nowadays. Indeed, the competition is huge and Disney was no longer at the top. They were lucky that they actually owned Pixar otherwise they would have been really in trouble. This movie is a good example about how dreadful the Disney features had become at some point. Seriously, how could you expect us to switch from such memorable characters like Snow White, Peter Pan, Dumbo, Pinocchio, Bambi, Cinderella, Cruella de Vil, Aladdinâs Genie to ⌠Chicken Little?!? Even before the movie started, you already knew it would stink. What a pathetic character⌠The story was not much better as it was terribly generic, predictable and frankly quite tedious. In my opinion, their biggest mistake was to drop the hand-drawn animation and to do, just like everyone else, some CGI animation. That was a bad move since hand-drawn animation had been their specialty for decades and they should have stick to it. Eventually, since all their last efforts were flops (âHome on the rangeâ, âBrother Bearâ, âTreasure Planetâ, âAtlantisâ), they decided to switch to CGI and this movie was their first attempt with this technique and, as I mentioned earlier, the end-result looked terrible, especially after so many years passed by. Anyway, to conclude, it is actually pretty weak and I donât think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you have some very young children to entertain but, even in this case, there are so many better movies to watch with them.

Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 28 December 2012 12:23 (A review of Zoop in Afrika)Since I have been living in the Netherlands, I have always been interested in Dutch movies. However, even though some of them are really interesting, unfortunately, many of those are also truly boring to watch. This movie is a good example. It is based on a rather popular TV show called âZoopâ which took place in a Dutch zoo. I have to admit, the fact that the makers moved the action from the Netherlands to Africa was pretty good and it gave a greater scale to their adventure. Eventually, this movie was a success and they eventually made 2 sequels (one in India and one in South-America). Still, even though the concept was not bad, I still think it was a really tedious watch. I mean, I never cared about the TV show which was obviously made for a (very) young audience and this movie was not much better. The characters were all some annoying stereotypes, the young actors gave some rather poor performance and above all, the whole thing was really boring to watch. To conclude, even though it was a very successful flick, I really didnât like it and I donât think it is worth a look, even if you are interested in Dutch movies.

Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 28 December 2012 10:35 (A review of Nanny McPhee)Honestly, I wasnât expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Emma Thomspon, I still wanted to check it out. Honestly, it is quite sad that such a terrific actress like her nowadays would get the lead only for such a tedious family feature. Apparently, she even wrote the screenplay which is even sadder. Indeed, back in the 90âs, she won an Academy Award for the screenplay she wrote for âSense and Sensibilityâ. To make it clear, I thought this movie was a huge step down for her. Maybe I shouldnât be so harsh since it is a just a children feature and, indeed, kids might like it more than I did but I still think it was a really tedious flick to watch. I mean, the whole thing was rather well made, there was a decent cast (Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Kelly Macdonald, Angela Lansbury, Imelda Staunton) but the plot was hardly original. Indeed, in my opinion, this character is just a rather ugly version of Mary Poppins, not much more than that Iâm afraid. Above all, I thought the whole thing was just really generic, predictable and above all really boring to watch. Eventually, they still managed to make a sequel out of this, a sequel which I found just as boring, but my 6 years old daughter enjoyed it more than the original installment. Anyway, in my opinion, this movie is a waste of talent, it is just a boring family feature and there are tons of better movies you can watch with your kids.

Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 28 December 2012 10:14 (A review of Becoming Jane)I have to confess, even though I have a master degree in English, I have never read any books written by Jane Austen (I know, it is pretty badâŚ). I have seen a couple of movie adaptations, some good, some rather boring, and I came to the conclusion Iâm not a really a fan of her stories. So, I might not be the right audience for this movie but I still wanted to give check it out. First of all, it was rather interesting that the makers wanted to tell her life story as if it would have taken place like in one of her novels. There is a good chance that it happened really differently in reality but accuracy was not the point with this movie. Anyway, I thought it was rather well made but it was still rather tedious to watch.  Basically, it took the characters one hour to finally realize that they loved each other, then, it took them 30 more minutes to finally decide that they should be together. So you think they will go against expectations and get married against the rules which was rather surprising but, no, really conveniently, just after leaving her house, seriously just 5 minutes later, she finds a letter saying that his parents wonât make it without his support and money⌠Of course, they drop the whole thing, get back home and they both live miserably until they die⌠Of course, since Austen never got married, they couldnât have been together but this whole back and forth was just really annoying. Actually, this movie reminded me of âBright Starâ, a similar movie dealing with the life of John Keats before he became famous. The big difference is that âBright Starâ was really brilliantly directed and it was just drenched with passion. Still, this Austen biopic was decent. I mean, the directing was solid and I thought that Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy were both really good (Actually, they both deserved a better movie than this). To conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is a decent costume drama and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 28 December 2012 08:54 (A review of Lethal Weapon 2)Personally, I always had a weak spot for those âLethal Weaponâ flicks and, even if this sequel is not as highly regarded as its predecessor, I still think it is actually pretty good. Indeed, I just saw it again yesterday and I was amazed about how good Mel Gibson and Danny Glover were in this. Indeed, they were really badass, quite often really hilarious and they still had this great chemistry together. In my opinion, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh must be the best cop duo. This time around, there was no need for any introduction and we could get on with the action right away. This time, they also added Joe Pesci in one of his most famous roles, Leo Getz. Pesci seems able to play only two types of characters, dramatic, usually a gangster (âRaging Bullâ, âGoodfellasâ, âCasinoâ) or comedic (âHome Aloneâ, âMy Cousin Vinnyâ). Thatâs it, he doesnât do anything else but thankfully, he is pretty good and he was a nice addition to this franchise. Ok, I have to admit it, the plot is kind of weak (the whole diplomatic immunity thingy is really a tired old gimmick) and the love story was really poorly developed. I mean, it is pretty obvious that the makers thought it was time for Riggs to have a new love interest but they were not sure how to handle it. Eventually, it will be covered with the next installment. To conclude, even though it is nothing amazing, it remains a solid sequel, an entertaining action flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
