A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 5 months ago on 21 September 2012 10:26 (A review of Poulet au vinaigre)

I'm not sure if Claude Chabrol is really know here in Listal but in France, he was one of the most highly regarded directors and I always had a weak spot for his work. He made movies for more than 5 decades, made more than 50 movies and even started the French New Wave (la nouvelle vague). This time around, it is a typical French detective story and I'm afraid that without Chabrol's touch that it would have been rather tedious to watch. Indeed, the whole thing is actually pretty standard but the characters have all a rather dark side, even the main character, Inspecteur Lavardin, and it makes the whole thing pretty spellbinding to watch. To conclude, even though it is nothing really mind-blowing, it remains a well made police feature and it is definitely worth, especially if you are interested in French movies.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 5 months ago on 21 September 2012 09:42 (A review of Knight and Day)

There was a time when Tom Cruise was the biggest movie star and it was enough to attach his name to a flick to make it a blockbuster. Even if this time is long gone, it seems that Tom Cruise doesn't want to let it go. Indeed, a movie like this would have been pretty big 15 years ago, but nowadays, only huge franchises are really successful and only a handful actors are able to attract the audience nowadays and Cruise is unfortunately not one of them anymore. Anyway, this flick is basically a throwback to those good old spy romantic comedies, usually starring Cary Grant and I must say that Tom Cruise was actually pretty good. Unfortunately, the plot was just too fluffy and lightweight for me. Basically, none of the characters was taking seriously what was going on, so why should I?  I think it would have been more interesting if Tom Cruise would have been really neurotic and unstable but that's just me. It is rather interesting to note that Tom Cruise dropped out from 'The Tourist', another disappointing high profile feature released in 2010, to make this flick when, in fact, they had a really similar plot (instead of a clueless guy getting involved in some spy conspiracy, you had here a clueless girl). Anyway,  I still think that the whole thing was rather well made and entertaining and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 5 months ago on 20 September 2012 12:32 (A review of Red Sonja)

I know, this movie has a terribly lame reputation (according to Arnold Schwarzenegger, it was even one of his worst movies) but when I was a kid, I actually really enjoyed the damned thing. Back then, I was about 12 years old and I didn't know it was a huge flop and a laughable matter and I thought it was actually quite entertaining. Eventually, 20 years later, I though it was time for a re-watch and, this time, I saw it with Nick, my step-son. Honestly, I still don't get the hatred towards this flick. Indeed, there was some cool music by Ennio Morricone, the whole thing (costumes, sets, props,...) looked pretty awesome and, even though the story was really pedestrian, it thought it was entertaining enough. Of course, something I didn't notice when I was a kid was that the acting was actually really weak, especially concerning Arnold Schwarzenegger and Brigitte Nielsen. I still think they were both pretty bad-ass though. On top of that, they were not helped either by those terribly cheesy dialogues. Still, all in all, I don't think it deserves its bad reputation, as a matter of fact, I think it is a decent fantasy feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 5 months ago on 20 September 2012 11:41 (A review of The Quiet Man (1952))

Honestly, beforehand, I have never heard of this movie before but since it was on the list '1001 movies you must see before you die', I was definitely eager to check it out. First of all, I had to admit it, I'm not really familiar with John Wayne's work and, in my opinion, he basically always portrayed typical tough guys so I was rather surprised to see him being cast in a such a romantic feature. And the best thing is that it actually worked. Basically, it is a rather simple and very old-fashioned romantic feature. Still, the fact that it was so old-fashioned made it, at the same time, very cute and charming but also sometimes rather annoying to watch. Still, I thought it was quite enjoyable to watch and the whole thing had an extra personal dimension (indeed, my own father moved from the Netherlands to live in France and I myself moved from France to live in the Netherlands). Eventually, it remains a harmless romantic flick and I thought it was pretty good, even if it was nothing really mind-blowing. To conclude, it is a decent (meaning that it deals with decency) romantic feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A classic

Posted : 12 years, 5 months ago on 20 September 2012 09:41 (A review of The Misfits)

After hearing so many things about this movie, I was definitely eager to check it out. Basically, it is one of those movies which are more famous for their troubled production than for the movie itself. Indeed, not only Marilyn Monroe was reportedly impossible to handle during the shooting but all 3 major stars died soon after this movie (Clark Gable died just after filming this movie, Marilyn Monroe died a year later before completing any other project and Montgomery Clift died just a few years later). Sure, that’s all really fascinating but what about the movie itself? Well, it was an intriguing piece of work but I was not sure what to make of it. Indeed, it basically deals with some outcasts, who were in fact pretty much some losers confused with themselves and about what they should do with themselves. Seriously, it was pretty eerie when considering where those actors stood at this point in their own life. Still, even though it was sometimes quite fascinating to watch, those characters were also, at some point, pretty pathetic and annoying (especially Marilyn Monroe's character). Still, in spite of its flaws, it remains a rather spellbinding movie to watch, especially if you are interested in the actors involved.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 5 months ago on 20 September 2012 08:09 (A review of Hoodwinked! (2005))

Honestly, beforehand, I thought the whole thing could be pretty cool. Indeed, the concept was basically to provide some kind of dark funny satire on the ancient tale of Red Riding Hood. Unfortunately, the whole thing was fairly disappointing. First of all, the animation was not really good, even rather ugly, especially compared to the work of Dreamworks and Pixar. Furthermore, even though it was a nice concept, the story didn't hold up very well. Indeed, they try to convince us that this version of this tale is really smart and clever but it wasn't. As a result, I'm not sure that young kids will get the 'advanced' jokes and I think the whole thing would be still too childish for grown-ups. After a while, the jokes were rather annoying than funny and the whole thing felt like a missed opportunity. Even though this movie was far from being a huge box-office success, somehow, they thought they should make a sequel (which I haven't seen yet) but the end-result seemed even more underwhelming. To conclude, I have seen worse animated movies but this one was still pretty ugly, not really funny and, eventually, not really worth a look, in my opinion.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 5 months ago on 18 September 2012 12:28 (A review of Alexander)

Even though it was a huge flop, since I always enjoyed Oliver Stone's work, I was still eager to check this flick. Unfortunately, it does deserve its reputation and it is arguably the most disappointing movie directed by Stone. I must admit that, the first time around, I wasn't really sure what to make of this movie (honestly, I didn't think it was that bad actually) so I watched it again a few months later, and this time around, I understood what was wrong with this movie and I understood that it was not that good at all. Above all, I thought it was just really messy and, frankly, rather poorly written. Indeed, they focus on certain moments, certain scenes which seem rather trivial whereas some other which sound really important or interesting are just rushed or even skipped. And, of course, there was the old homosexual thing which was indeed poorly handled. I mean, if you are going to tackle the subject, you either go for it all the way or you just drop the whole thing all together. What I mean by that, is that, for example, you are treated with a gratuitous naked scene with Rosario Dawson but then, with Jared Leto, they don't even touch each other and those scenes were just terribly embarrassing. Still, the whole thing is not completely worthless. Indeed, it remains a fascinating historical figure , the whole thing looked awesome and there was a nice cast (Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, Val Kilmer, Jared Leto, Anthony Hopkins, Rosario Dawson, Christopher Plummer, Jonathan Rhys Meyers). For Colin Farrell, it was yet another disappointing high profile project, just like 'Miami Vice' which was released 2 years later. To conclude, even though it is far from being one of the worst movies ever made, it is still a disappointment and it is not really worth a look, I'm afraid.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 5 months ago on 18 September 2012 11:36 (A review of Nine to Five)

Since I have a huge weak spot for Jane Fonda, I always try to watch her movies when I get the opportunity. Unfortunaly, I thought this flick was terribly disappointing. Basically, it is one of those comedies which turn an interesting premise (a trio of working women have to deal with an awfull boss) into a stupid farce with some tedious jokes along the way. I can't believe it is tagged as a 'feministic' comedy... What is so feministic about it? The fact that they try to shoot their boss? I thought it gave a rather negative image of working women but that's not what really bothered me here. What really bothered me is that the whole thing was just not really funny and pretty boring to watch. Such a waste of talent... At least, Dolly Parton did manage to get a hit out of this. To conclude, I have seen worse movies but this one is still pretty tedious and it is not really worth a look, in my opinion.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 5 months ago on 18 September 2012 11:16 (A review of The A-Team)

Honestly, I had some rather low expectations concerning this flick. Indeed, even though I enjoyed the TV-show as a kid, I never thought it was really amazing and TV shows adaptations tend to be rather disappointing especially they are based solely on name recognition just to make some easy money. Eventually, I must say that I was actually pleasantly surprised by the damned thing. Sure, it was still nothing amazing but I thought it was not bad at all and I was entertained throughout the whole thing. The first thing they got right was the cast. Liam Neeson and Quinton Jackson were both pretty good, even though I can't remember that Hannibal was such a badass in the TV show. Above all, Bradley Cooper and Sharlto Copley were pretty amazing and they delivered some pitch-perfect performances. In my opinion, the only weakness in the cast was Jessica Biel. I mean, she tried very hard, that's obvious, but she was just too young for such a part and it would have worked better with someone like Angelina Jolie for example. The other thing I enjoyed was the humor and the dialogues were just hilarious. The bottom line was that the tone was just perfect and I was laughing during most of the duration. The action scenes were obviously really preposterous and over the top but it was exactly the point here. The only weakness, I guess, was that the story was just too pedestrian and remained in the safe zone without being really challenging whatsoever. Still, I actually had a good time watching this flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A bad movie

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 17 September 2012 11:38 (A review of American Outlaws)

Since I saw him in 'Tigerland', I always had a weak spot for Colin Farrell so I was definitely eager to check this flick. As a matter of fact, it is the very first movie Farrell made after 'Tigerland'. Ok, I have to admit it, I'm maybe too harsh with my rating here but, in my opinion, it is probably the worst movie he has made so far. Indeed, I thought he was totally miscast as Jesse James (but the rest of the cast was not much better, I'm afraid...). Above all, I thought the story was really boring and totally uninteresting. Basically, it is one of those (very) light Western where it seems to be jolly fun to be there and where everybody is nicely good looking and clean shaven. Personally, I prefer the gritty approach but that's just me. After this movie, Colin Farrell will constantly switch between interesting projects and terrible misfires so I'm not sure where I stand concerning this actor but I still believe he is very talented. To conclude, in my opinion, it is a very weak Western and it is absolutely not worth a look, even if you are a fan of the genre
