An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 4 March 2012 11:02 (A review of Bounce)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for both Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow, I thought it should check it out. Eventually, I’m afraid the whole thing turned out to be rather underwhelming. It's too bad because Don Roos who made before 'The Opposite of Sex' seemed to be an interesting director. Basically, it is one of those typical romantic-comedies based on a misunderstanding/lie and I always thought that this concept was  utterly predictable, pointless, rather obnoxious and just plain boring. I mean, as a viewer, since you already have all the answers about what's going on, how is it supposed to be entertaining in any way? Furthermore, sooner or later (usually later), the characters will all find out what was actually going on, then they always break up but they usually end up together (ooops... I hope I didn't spoil it for you...). At least, Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow were bother really charming, they both did their best with this material and I thought they had some good chemistry. Still, even though it wasn't really bad, I thought it was a boring and unoriginal romantic-comedy and it is not really worth a look, even if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 4 March 2012 10:41 (A review of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines)

Personally, I always thought that this flick was the least impressive and most underwhelming of the whole franchise. Yesterday, I watched it again with my step-son and I still have the same opinion about it (yes, I even prefer the 4th installment directed by McG). The main issue, in my opinion, is that it was exactly the same plot as part 1 and part 2 except that John Connor was now grown-up and there was this time a female terminator. At least with the 1st sequel, they managed to bring up enough new ideas to still make it interesting and many people think it is even better than the first installment. However, like most of the trilogies, this 3rd installment didn't provide anything new, original or interesting to the whole mythology. The only advantage it has it that it was made in the CGI time period and the special effects looked indeed pretty cool. And, indeed, as a stand-alone feature, it remains actually a well made and rather entertaining SF flick, no more and no less than that. To conclude, it never reached the level of its predecessors but still, when you think about it, it is not that bad and it is even worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 3 March 2012 08:29 (A review of Chéri)

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since I was directed by Stephen Frears, I thought I might as well check it out. Furthermore, even though Michelle Pfeiffer might not be anymore one of the most famous actress in the world, I always had a weak spot for her. For this movie, she was working again with Stephen Frears more than 20 years after ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ which sounded quite promising. Eventually, even though both movies were costume dramas, they didn’t have much in common and this movie never reached the level of ‘Dangerous Liaisons’  which must be one of the best movies delivered by Frears. I mean, it wasn’t really bad and there were many things I actually enjoyed about this flick. Indeed, the whole thing (costumes, sets,...) looked really neat, the directing was decent emough, the acting was quite good and the dialogues were very nice and witty. However, I didn’t care much about the story and, even if it wasn't comptetely boring, it wasn't far from it, I'm afraid. At least, the characters were rather interesting but I didn't care much about what they were going through. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a well made costume drama and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 3 March 2012 05:25 (A review of The Weather Man)

With Nicolas Cage, you never know what you'll get. Indeed, you could be  either a critial hit ('Bad Lieutenant') or something pretty lame ('Bangkok Dangerous'). This time around, the main character portrayed by Cage was a total loser, or at least someone who didn't appreciate his life but, still, I thought this flick was pretty good and I don't really understand why everyone says it was depressing. In fact, I thought the damned thing was actually pretty funny, sometimes even hilarious. On top of that, for once, you had here a rather realistic comedy which was more interesting than all those moronic comedies produced every year. Finally, Nicolas Cage was pretty good but I enjoyed even more Michael Caine who gave once again one of his amazing understated performances. The only issue was maybe that there were too many sub-plots dealing with archery, pedophilia and other things but the relationships between the different characters were already interesting , in my opinion. For Gore Verbinski, this flick was quite a change of pace (he had just released the first ‘Pirates of the Carribean’ and would make back-to-back the 2 sequels after this movie) but his fans were apparently not really supportive. Anyway, to conclude, I thought it was a pretty good flick and it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 3 March 2012 08:33 (A review of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels)

Even though I keep watching his movies (I have seen already 22 of them), I usually have a hard time with Steve Martin. Lately, I have watched many of his movies and I must admit I don't really enjoy his work, even the most highly regarded movies such as 'The Jerk' or 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles'. However, this flick is one of the few exceptions. Indeed, it is not amongst his most famous flicks but I really enjoyed it. Of course, the fact that this time, he has Michael Caine with him, was a tremendous asset. This guy is one of the greatest actors out there and he is in my opinion terribly underrated. He gave here one of his great performances and I thought he was just hilarious. Steve Martin was also pretty good and together, they made a really funny odd couple. To be honest, the story was a rather standard heist comedy but it was entertaining enough and there was plenty of room for both actors to really shine. To conclude, even though it is rather forgotten, in my opinion, it is one of the best movies starring Steve Martin and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in his work.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 3 March 2012 08:22 (A review of John Tucker Must Die)

Even though I wasn't expecting much from the damned thing, at least, you have to admit that they did choose a really cool title and somehow, I ended up watching the damned thing. Eventually, even though I had some rather low expectations, the damned thing still turned out to be seriously  lame and just plain boring. I mean, with such a title, they could have made a neat dark comedy with some pitch black humor but, instead, they went for some really generic high-school comedy with a really predictable plot. Eventually, there was only one thing I liked in this flick and it was Jesse Metcalfe. Indeed, he was very well cast and he delivered a decent performance, even though his character was barely developped, like the rest of the characters. While watching this, I was wondering,  if they did choose instead to show John Tucker as a really genuine nice guy who just happened to be (really) badly oversexed? Now, that would have been interesting. Of course, it wasn't meant to be and all those characters were just completely uninteresting and borderline obnoxious. Anyway, to conclude, I didn't like the damned thing but I guess I wasn't the target audience and maybe you'll end up enjoying it more than I did but I don't think it is really worth a look.

An underrated movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 2 March 2012 10:51 (A review of Junior)

To be honest, I'm usually not a fan of those comedies starring action movie stars as most of them are usually worthless. However, I don't understand why everybody think this one is so atrocious and, as matter of fact, I don't think it was bad at all. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito were reunited just like in 'Twins' and, this time, Emma Thompson even joins the party. I don't know, maybe it is because they really pushed the boundaries and to make Schwarzenegger get pregnant was maybe too much for the mainstream audience but I thought it was actually pretty funny. Furthermore, I think DeVito is one of the most underrated actors out there and he really rocked as usual. Same thing for Emma Thompson who is one of the best actresses alive and shows here that she can handle comedy without any trouble. Of course, the story is completely preposterous and it is far from being a masterpiece but I don't think it deserves such a bad reputation. To conclude, I think you should check it out yourself and make up your own mind, but, in my opinion, I think it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 2 March 2012 10:27 (A review of Vicky Cristina Barcelona)

Even though I used to be a huge fan of Woody Allen's work, I have to admit that I don’t really care much about his movies anymore. I mean, I still check them whenever I have the opportunity but, in my opinion, it has been decades since he has delivered anything really mindblowing. This flick was a perfect example. Indeed, even though it must be one of his most acclaimed recent directing efforts, it turned out to be a decent watch but I thought it was still nothing really amazing after all. I mean, there was a very good cast (Rebecca Hall, Scarlett Johansson, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz), they all delivered some pretty good performances and there was some really good dialogues, especially at the beginning. Unfortunately, even if Allen gave us 4 intriguing characters all involved in some even more intriguing relationships, the whole thing never went anywhere after all. As a matter of fact, at the end, Rebecca Hall’s and Scarlett Johansson’s characters end up basically at the same position they started . Eventually, I really loved the first half and it reminded me of Allen's best work but, while the second half was watchable, it was still rather underwhelming. Anyway, to conclude, even though I think it is actually rather overrated, I have to admit that it was still an entertaining romantic flick and it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 1 March 2012 09:50 (A review of Bobby)

Back then, before it came out, there was a huge buzz surrounding this movie. Honestly, it wasn't anything groundbreaking eventually but still, I thought it was pretty good. First of all there is a massive cast (Harry Belafonte, Joy Bryant, Nick Cannon, Emilio Estevez, Laurence Fishburne, Heather Graham, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Hunt, Joshua Jackson, Ashton Kutcher, Shia LaBeouf, Lindsay Lohan, William H. Macy, Demi Moore, Freddy Rodríguez, Martin Sheen, Christian Slater, Sharon Stone, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Elijah Wood) and they all gave some decent performances. However, I think they got a little too ambitious with so many characters and so many storylines and, as a result, some of those storylines were interesting but some of others didn't work that well. Still, I thought it was an interesting time bubble and the ending (actually the best part of the whole movie) with Kennedy's speech was rather heartbreaking. To conclude, it is rather flawed and no masterpiece whatsoever but I still enjoyed it and it is definitely worth a look.

A classic

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 1 March 2012 08:43 (A review of The Terminator)

Yesterday, I saw it again with my step-son and, man, it was just a real blast!!! It is rather funny to see that even before he got those monster budgets, James Cameron was already able to make some pretty awesome action scenes. I mean, 30 years later, the whole thing still holds up pretty good whereas most of the 80's movies look nowadays terribly cheesy. Of course, the story was rather preposterous but they still managed to create a fascinating mythology and a dreary vision of the future. On the other hand, there managed to provide many funny scenes and some great one liners along the way. Another masterstroke was that even though Schwarzenegger couldn't act whatsoever, since he was portraying an emotionless cyborg, it was just perfect. They even managed to fill in a romantic intrigue which wasn't annoying at all. Eventually, back then, action movies were R rated with a huge capital R and they weren't skirmish about those. To conclude, even though I'm usually not a great fan of action movies, I really loved this one, it is a great mix of action and SF and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
