An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 14 March 2012 12:50 (A review of Happy Gilmore)

It seems that Adam Sandler has lost his touch nowadays as all his recent movies have been some flop at the box-office. As far as I’m concerned, I have never cared for his movies but since this one was supposed to be one of his 'classics', I thought I should check it out. To be honest, I still didn’t like it, that's for sure, but I have to admit it was actually better than 'Billy Madison' and many other movies starring Sandler. Once again, he was portraying an aggressive foul-mouthed moron who actually had a golden heart, at least, that's what the viewers were supposed to think. Anyway, I enjoyed the way they made a parody about sport movies in general and golf in particular, pointing out a few ridiculous things concerning this sport. Still, even though it was funny from time to time, most of it was still really boring and Gilmore was eventually more obnoxious than funny. Anyway, this flick was a success, even more than 'Billy Madison' so there was no way to stop Adam Sandler from making similar flicks for the next 20 years. To conclude, even though I didn't hate the damned thing, I still think it was average and I don’t think it is really worth a look, except if you are a huge fan of the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 14 March 2012 10:18 (A review of Coco Before Chanel)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Audrey Tautou, I thought I might check it out. First of all, even after she got some major exposure thanks to 'Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain', Tautou actually never really broke through on the international scene. However, in France, she has remained one of the most sought-after actresses. This time, she had the opportunity to portray a French icon and she delivered a totally different performance than in 'Amélie' but I thought she was quite convincing. The directing by Anne Fontaine was also pretty good and she managed to give an idea about how she must have felt and also about the mood during this paticuliar time period. So, I enjoyed this biopic but I can't say I was really blown away by the whole thing though. Indeed, the story was definitely intriguing but I didn't care much about her love life. I mean, her relationship with Balsan (portrayed by Benoit Poelvoorde) was rather interesting but her other relationship with Boy Capel (portrayed by Alessandro Nivola) was honestly rather boring and predictable. Anyway, even though it was not a masterpiece,  it was still a well made and rather fascinating biopic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in this subject.

A very good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 12 March 2012 10:19 (A review of A History of Violence (2005))

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. First of all, this movie marked the 1st collaboration between David Cronenberg and Viggo Mortensen. Apparently, they really enjoyed working together, the audience certainly did appreciate the end-results, and they recently made their 4th movie together, 'Crimes of the Future', which I should be able to watch hopefully next week. Coming back on our main feature, first of all, even though the story was intriguing enough, I enjoyed above all the directing and the acting. Indeed, back in the 80's, Cronenberg started his career with some rather sleezy horror movies which became eventually cult-classics but, decades later, he has became a much more subtle director and delivered here a really tensed thriller. Obviously, Mortensen delivered as well a very good performance in the sense that you could believe that this gentle man used to be a terrifying gangster but we shouldn't forget Ed Harris and William Hurt, two of the best and most underrated supporting actors at work nowadays. They were both terrific and their confrontation with Mortensen was pretty impressive. It's interesting that I experienced the ending completely differently the second time around. Indeed, the first time I watched this movie, I thought that, after all what happened, they tried to make us believe that he got back to his life with his nice little wife as if nothing just happened. However, the second time around, I thought it was more ambiguous after all, as we don't know at all if it will work out for them since it will never be the same between them anymore. Anyway, to conclude, it is a very well made and entertaining thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in David Cronenberg's work.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 12 March 2012 10:08 (A review of Paris)

Cédric Klapisch is not really famous here on Listal but he is highly regarded in France and many of his movies were very successful there. This time around, he went for one of those hyperlink features and he managed to get a top French cast (Juliette Binoche, Romain Duris, Fabrice Luchini, Albert Dupontel, Mélanie Laurent, François Cluzet, Karin Viard, Olivia Bonamy). Eventually, the biggest problem I had with this movie was that there were just too many storylines, too many characters and the whole thing felt poorly developped and even rather messy. I wish he had focused on some of those stories and got rid off the rest. Still, even though there was some real bullsh*t here and there, I really enjoyed the directing and the performances were really good as well. I especially liked Fabrice Luchini and even though he keeps playing the same role in all his movies, he is always hilarious and it wasn't different this time. I guess the fact I'm not such a big fan of Paris was probably another reason why I wasn't really blown away by the whole thing. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, there was plenty of sweet and touching stuff and, eventually, I enjoyed it and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

A classic

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 12 March 2012 07:43 (A review of Sophie's Choice)

I already saw this movie but, since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, I'm glad I gave this movie another look because I was much more able to enjoy it this time around. Indeed, the first time I watched it, like everybody else, I was blown away by Meryl Streep who was indeed really terrific and if only for her performance, you should definitely check this movie. However, at the time, I completely misunderstood Kevin Kline's performance and character and I thought he was rather annoying and, honestly, not really convincing. I don't know, I thought he was way too hysterical and he got on my nerves pretty bad. But now, after rewatching the damned thing, I finally understood how this couple was working and how fascinating they were together, obviously for Stingo but also for the audience. Indeed, they were basically two broken souls who lived a life full of fantasies, real hardship and erotic passion. Sure, they were both lying all the time, to each other, to their other acquaintances and even to themselves but it was their only way to cope, for Nathan, with his mental disorder and, for Sophie, with her dreadful traumatic past. Even though Stingo didn't see it coming, it seemed obvious that they couldn't last forever like this but, at least, they managed to survive for a while together and they even had a good time in spite their circumstances. Well, basically, when I first watched it, I didn't get all this at all and I was wondering where the story was going during the whole thing until the shattering ending. Indeed, the way they ended it was completely heartbreaking but also very powerful. Anyway, to conclude, I finally understand now why it is such a classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 11 March 2012 08:43 (A review of The Wedding Date)

Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and not only I have since then an endless selection of movies to choose from but, as a result, I have become slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one or two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some really obscure features. This movie was a perfect example. First of all, even though Debra Messing had a successful career on TV-show above all with 'Will and Grace', she never really managed to breakthrough on the big screen and, among the few movies she made, this flick was probably the best thing she has done so far. Basically, it was really similar to 'Pretty Woman' as it was dealing with prostitution but still removing all the darkness involved in this profession. Eventually, what I liked about this movie was the two main characters. Indeed, even though they were terribly stereotypical, they were still both quite charming and there was some good chemistry between Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney. It is too bad the makers didn't dare to push the whole thing even further concerning the personality of this male escort. Instead, they remained in the boundaries of this genre and they just followed the old formula followed by most of the romantic-comedies. Still, even though it was not really original and completely predictable, it was a well made and enjoyable romantic-comedy and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 11 March 2012 02:24 (A review of Birdman of Alcatraz)

It has been years since I saw a movie directed by the late John Frankenheimer and it's a shame since I have really a weak spot for this director. Anyway, this is the last movie of his that I have seen and it must be one of his best. It stars the great Burt Lancaster who gives a very good performance. It is a simple but still rather spellbinding story. Even though it takes place in a prison, for once, it doesn't deal with jailbreak which I found quite refreshing. Furthermore, it is pretty obvious that this flick has been an inspiration for all the flicks dealing with the prison life that came afterwards such as 'The shawshank redemption'. I really liked the directing and the way they decided to show a man who had a violent past but who still managed to find something inspiring in such a dreadful place. To be honest, I'm not really familiar with Burt Lancaster but he sure displayed some fine acting skills here and I will definitely watch more movies starring this guy. To conclude, in my opinion, it is a forgotten gem, I really liked it and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A bad movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 11 March 2012 12:13 (A review of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel)

Obviously, I didn't expect much from the damned thing and indeed it turned out to be pretty bad. Eventually, the only thing positive about this movie was that it wasn't worse than its predecessor, that's it... But I can't say it was better either though. The most incredible thing is that this sequel was actually a success, even one of the most successful movies ever made! I mean, I can accept that the 1st movie was a success, it was something new, based on a popular cartoon, but why all those people would pay ONCE again some expensive movie tickets to see such a worthless sequel?!? Anyway, once again, those chipmunks were terribly obnoxious, the jokes were terrible, the music was awfull and I won't even mention the 'plot'... Since I have 3 kids, I have watched and still watch many family features with them and it is really depressing that so many parents would bring their kids to watch this when there are so many better and underrated kid flicks out there. To conclude, it was pretty bad, it is not worth a look whatsoever and if you want to watch something with your kids, just watch 'Fantastic Mr Fox' or anything done by Pixar instead.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 11 March 2012 09:43 (A review of Everything Is Illuminated)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, with its quirky poster and title, it seemed to be rather intriguing so I was quite eager to check it out. Basically, like many actors before him, Liev Schreiber decided to make his directing début and, eventually, I thought it turned out to be actually pretty good. Indeed, the directing was decent enough and, above all, I really loved the first half which was just hilarious with some great dialogues and some seriously weird and whimsical characters. But, then, during the second half, it became suddenly really deep and serious and the end was eventually even rather heartbreaking. To be honest, this rather brutal switch was a little bit hard to digest. Still, the story was really intriguing and the actors delivered some good performances. Indeed,  Elijah Wood was fine but I was also impressed by 2 unknowns actors called Eugene Hutz and Boris Leskin. It is interesting that even though Elijah Wood had reached some major stardom with the Lord of the Rings trilogy since then he has mostly showed up in such small and even rather obscure productions like this one. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its quirkiness, I thought it was a pretty good tale and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 10 March 2012 03:01 (A review of Motherhood)

In fact, Uma Thurman reminds me somehow of Nicolas Cage. Indeed, you would usually find her he in some forgettable, even worthless pictures (like 'The Accidental Husband') but, from time to time, she still manage to pick up some really amazing movies (like 'Pulp Fiction'). With this in mind, I wasn't expecting much from this flick. Indeed, the ratings were pretty bad, the poster just looked terrible and the premise didn’t really sound promising. Still, probably because my expectations were so low, the damned thing turned out to be not bad at all after all. It was above all thanks to Uma Thurman who was virtually in every single scene. Indeed, she delivered a really convincing performance. The main problem I had with this movie was that they tried too much to make it all sound quirky and clever but it didn't work very well. Furthermore, I think they messed the tone because I was never sure if I should feel sorry about the main character or laugh at her. Anyway, to conclude, even though this movie was rather flawed, I think it is underrated and it is actually definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Uma Thurman's work.
