An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 19 April 2012 11:10 (A review of Four Brothers)

I have noticed that this movie is quite popular here on Listal and in general and it is indeed a decent action/drama but nothing more than that, I'm afraid. I wonder if the viewers who love this movie have seen Singleton's directing debut 'Boyz n the Hood'. John Singleton was only 24 years old when he made this movie and became the youngest man ever nominated for Best director academy award. I mean, this was an amazing movie and you should definitely check it out. Still, 15 years later, he made this new action flick and it is not bad at all, the directing was really good and there was a nice cast (Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, André Benjamin, Garrett Hedlund, Terrence Howard, Josh Charles, Sofía Vergara, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Taraji P. Henson) and they all gave some convincing performances. I guess, it all depends where you stand concerning action movies. I mean, fans would legitimately tell me that the plot is not really important, that it is all about the execution and I must admit that this movie was quite perfectly executed indeed. Unfortunately, in my case, I don't care if I watch a drama, a comedy or an action flick, the story has to be more or less interesting and, in this case, it was rather generic, I'm afraid. To conclude, it still remain a well made and entertaining action movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 19 April 2012 09:34 (A review of Venus)

Peter O'Toole was a fascinating actor and the fact that he never won any acting Academy Awards is a proof how much those guys are sometimes really out of touch. I have to admit it though, it must have been really difficult to choose between Forest Withaker who gave a really strong performance in 'The Last King of Scotland' and O'Toole who was also really strong in this movie. Indeed, he was quite amazing and especially the first 20 minutes were just hilarious. Of course, the movie was about him meeting a very young girl and, for the rest of the movie, there was this debate about what you should think of him. Indeed, was he an old dirty pervert or just an old guy who should be entitled to have one last glimpse of female beauty? To be honest, even though this discussion was interesting, it wasn't as interesting as O'Toole's fascinating character. I understand that they wanted to spice up the whole thing but I thought that the study of an old man in his twilight days was interesting enough without all this stuff. Anyway, even if I wasn’t completely sold, I still liked this movie, it is actually one of the best movies about this subject and it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 19 April 2012 07:42 (A review of The Fog)

Since I have a weak spot for John Carpenter’s movies, I definitely had to watch this flick at some point. Back then, Carpenter was at the top of his career and all the movies he directed at the time became some classics. This one came after 'Halloween' and before 'Escape from New York' and it must be his most spooky movie. According to Roger Ebert, the fog was a disappointing villain but I don't agree with him. Indeed, I thought it was very efficient and I always enjoyed it when, in a horror movie, the protagonists have to face a faceless and dehumanized enemy (see 'Cabin Fever' as well for example). Another thing I enjoyed was that Carpenter didn't waste any time with some sub-plots involving the characters, those stories are always pointless in my opinion. Instead, he focused on the fog and its effects and that was much appreciated. Of course, the acting was rather cheesy and the whole thing was nothing really amazing but it was still one of the most satisfying ghost movies I have seen and it still stands out pretty well 30 years later. Anyway, to conclude, I really enjoyed it and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Carpenter's work.

Even though this movie has a rather lousy reputation, since I have a weak spot for John McTiernan's work, I was still eager to check it out. Basically, following the impressive 'Die Hard: With a Vengeance', McTiernan followed up with this ambitious adventure flick but, unfortunately, it was a flop and nowadays we don't hear much from this director anymore which is quite a shame. Honestly, I don't think it was that bad at all. Indeed, I have a weak spot for this genre and I thought it was rather well directed. Maybe there was a lack of big names in the cast but I thought that Antonio Banderas did a decent job as the lead. Basically, it is one of those movies which had a difficult time being made and it was apparently butchered in post-production but it didn't bother me much. Eventually, it all depends where you stand concerning this genre, if you can't stand it, it will be a total bore but if you are a fan, you'd probably end up enjoying it. To conclude, it is nothing amazing whatsoever but I thought it was midly entertaining and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 18 April 2012 08:35 (A review of An Education)

Since I kept hearing good things about this movie (it was even one of the best movies released in 2009 according to Roger Ebert), I was really eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, even though I did enjoy the story, I still think it was nothing really original and it was in fact even really predictable. Furthermore, they tried to give it a positive note (it was 'an education' for her, after all...), I wasn't really convinced especially with the ending. Indeed, when she was finally dumped, she went back to her study, they gave us some uplifting music and eventually she basically decided to pretend that the whole thing didn't happen. Still, even though the story was not really mind-blowing, it was still entertaining enough. Furthermore, it was very well written, the directing was decent and the cast was really good (Carey Mulligan, Olivia Williams, Alfred Molina, Peter Sarsgaard, Dominic Cooper, Rosamund Pike, Emma Thompson, Sally Hawkins), especially Carey Mulligan who was really amazing. After watching this movie and 'Never let me go', she definitely convinced me that she was one of the best actress of her generation and not a new sex bomb like Megan Fox for example. To conclude, even though the plot was actually nothing really amazing in my opinion, it was still enjoyable thanks to some solid directing and acting and it is definitely worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 17 April 2012 07:51 (A review of Keys to Tulsa)

Originally, I wanted to see this flick because Cameron Diaz was starring in it but eventually, she just had one small scene at the beginning, if I recall correctly. Basically, it is a forgotten neo-noir movie with a decent cast (Eric Stoltz, James Spader, Deborah Kara Unger, Michael Rooker, James Coburn, Cameron Diaz). The actors were not bad but the directing was pretty average and I didn't care much about the story at all since it was too generic and not really entertaining. Diaz was in this before reaching stardom but you can't say that this movie really did help her in her career. Anyway, the same year she starred in 'My Best Friend's Wedding' and a year later in 'There's Something About Mary' and finally reached the A list. This movie is forgotten, it is indeed rather forgettable and it is not really worth a look whatsoever.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 16 April 2012 07:35 (A review of Just Like Heaven)

Since I always had a weak spot for romantic-comedies, I was rather eager to watch this flick. The same year, Reese Witherspoon starred in 'Walk the line' and won her oscar later on so you could say that it was back then the best time of her career. I always find her charming and she delivered a decent performance her but it was nothing she hadn't done before. The good surprise from this movie, for me, was Mark Ruffalo who's definitely one of the most underrated actors at work nowadays. He was, as usual, very good, and actually deserved a better plot than this. And this was the main issue with this movie. Indeed, the story was entertaining enough but it was so generic and damned predictable, I can't say I was blown away by the whole thing. Still, it remains a well made and charming romantic-comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 15 April 2012 06:47 (A review of Surf's Up)

Back then, there were many penguin movies and whereas 'Happy Feet' and 'La marche de l'empereur' were really successful, this flick was quickly forgotten. Personally, I thought it looked pretty neat so I thought I should give a try and rent it to watch with the kids. For Sony Pictures Animation, it was their 2nd underperfoming features in a row following 'Open Season' but that's a shame because it was actually a very decent animated movie. First of all, the animation was downright gorgeous and the story was just really fun with some actually pretty impressive surf scenes. I guess, there is nowadays such an overload of animated movies maybe that's why it didn't find its audience but it is actually better than many other similar movies which were more successful at the box-office at that time. To conclude, it is really an underrated gem and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 15 April 2012 10:39 (A review of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

Even though ‘Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan’ has a better reputation, I actually preferred this Star Trek sequel. Not surprisingly, it turned out to be to the most successful movie of the serie until, of course, J. J. Abrams came with his reboot. Basically, the whole thing started out as a direct sequel to the previous movie as Admiral Kirk and his crew are shipping back to Earth to be judged for their 'crimes' but after 10 minutes, they just dropped the whole thing since there was a probe menacing to destroy our planet. Eventually, this plot was just an excuse to make the crew travel back in our time and, I must say, it was just really fun to see Kirk, Spock and the others wandering in our world. I also loved how arrogant and despising they were concerning their ancestors but would could blame them ? Basically, the previous Star Trek movies were rather serious but this one was just fun and I thought it was quite entertaining, even if it was still too cheesy for my taste. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing really mindblowing whatsoever, it was still entertaining and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like this genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 12 months ago on 14 April 2012 10:30 (A review of Can't Hardly Wait)

Even though this movie seemed to have a decent reputation, I wasn't expecting much from the damned thing but since there was a really nice cast involved (Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lauren Ambrose, Peter Facinelli, Seth Green, Freddy Rodríguez, Donald Faison, Jaime Pressly, Jason Segel, Eric Balfour, Selma Blair, Jenna Elfman, Melissa Joan Hart, Breckin Meyer), I really had to watch it at some point. Unfortunately, it still ended up being rather  average and borign. Actually, it was only after watching this movie that I came to the conclusion that it was maybe a parody of the genre which could explain why all the characters were so over-the-top. The only character who stood up was the one portrayed by Lauren Ambrose. Indeed, she was the only one playing it straight and I thought she was much more interesting than all these obnoxious and boring stereotypes. I always thought that Ambrose was really impressive in 'Six Feet Under' and she really deserved some better material than this movie to showcase her talent. I mean, there were here and there some good ideas and the ending was rather sweet but that was about it, I'm afraid. Anyway, to conclude, it was a rather weak High-School comedy and it is not really worth a look, except maybe you are fan of this genre.
